The Greatest Little Club on Earth - Mariners doco 2024

Was talking to my dad about this doco the other day, and thought about how I might want to reminisce about the success of those two seasons in the future. I realised I wouldn't really think to load up this doco to experience the emotions once more. I'd bring up replays of the finals on youtube instead.

As has been noted by many, this was a success story for Peil, overall. He can use this for self promotion and to get his foot in the door with bigger clubs (I'm thinking other codes) as a guy who brings success.

Again, I didn't need an extended sequence of him mountain biking, having vaguely relevant calls in his car, or discussing picking up speeding fines because he went to the wrong location for a meeting. That footage at the end of Peil walking away is burned into my mind, as I feel that was most likely recorded specifically for the moment, rather than how it's traditionally done in recontextualising a non-scripted moment.

I wanted to see how Mark Jackson was able to pick up the pieces from such a short turnaround, ingratiate himself with the squad and turn things around from such a poor start to winning it all.

I didn't dislike the whole feature, but I certainly felt it was a missed opportunity and is ultimately mostly forgettable. My expectations were sky high, admittedly, I was hoping for something I could watch in years to come that would cover all the the incredible highs and provide all of the context of the incredible achievement.

You lot are a hard bunch to satisfy. The Peil hate is pretty full on so I guess a lot of sour grapes on here when he spent millions then decided not to continue. I’ve met him a few times and thought he was a pretty honest person and clearly a good businessman and I feel his investment did some good for the club. Perhaps without that investment we don’t get the same results.

I liked the doco, perfect no but I feel it’s impossible to produce something everyone likes. Let’s look at all the comments every season on the kit and merch, some people will never be satisfied. If it’s not the colour it’s something else.

It’s a permanent record of our clubs success over two Fantastic seasons which may never be repeated by the club.

I liked the Pod and Ian talking about the office representation in the doco. That I pay attention to not other comments from people that have never worked there. If you don’t have a valid comment maybe keep it to yourself. If you did work in the office please advise when making your personal attacks on people so you have some cred and not just look like joining the bandwagon sledging everyone that worked at the club over two very successful seasons.

Rant over. Enjoy.

Maybe the wine and train strike has pushed me over the edge.

You've got to admit it had a bit of a Rich's vanity project vibe about it. For something that was condensing 2 hugely successful seasons into 2 hours he got too much screen time and focus. Maybe if it was 6 x 1 hour episodes it would have been less of a complaint but there must have been so much unused footage and stories untold. I would have liked to see more emphasis on the community and footage from times we've seen the crowd get really involved.

Ultimately I felt they wanted to tell a story but it was way too rushed. There was on field stuff and then cutting to off field stuff and it just didnt have the time to breathe like you see in some of the longer format shows. I'm sure a lot comes down to budget but do feel Rich probably had a bit too much influence on the story being told.

I think that the doco as misnamed. Why is it 'The Greatest Little Club on Earth'. That is because of the relative success of such as small club. It really concentrated on RP's tenure whose view is primarily a business man and that was reflected in the doco. But being the 'The Greatest Little Club on Earth' has more to do with the on field success.

Maybe 'Behind the Scenes of Running the Greatest Little Club on Earth'. Not everyone would agree with the spin but at least that title would reflect the doco.

. fair point ... but i think the vanity thing is the big, valid, criticism. more so because of the timing of his departure - it changes the context

. we want more football and more of the story because it is our story too, not just Rich's

It’s more people were getting very nasty towards others in the club when I assume they didn’t know them or haven’t worked in the office. I don’t dispute it has a Peil vibe but I guess he considers he has paid for the right tell his story.

. i kinda saw it as the opposite ... practically all the shit has been poured on Rich (i consider him and his advisor as the one person in this regard). the only real exception has been Alyssar - which is an interesting one

. from memory there were maybe two instances where she expressed her displeasure with the office or office staff ... and i would guess that most people have taken offence because they liked the familiar faces but have no real knowledge of how they actually performed in the office

. i'm not going to try to argue that one way or another, because other than some very minor volunteering i have spent practically no time working in the office. what i will say is that we have always been understaffed and most of the staff have learnt on the job ... as interns ... learning from those that were interns before them. most of them are so busy putting out fires, they don't have time to do their job - which seemed to be her criticism
