Is there an official team song for the Mariners?
The reason I ask the question is I'm a new fan of soccer (sorry, football). I became a fan when my daughter & son-in-law took me to see a pre-season match CCM v Perth in the 07/08 preseason. Until then I thought soccer was the most boring game ever invented by man. That game changed my mind completely, even though we lost 3-2; now I'm a commited fan, I've become an 08/09 member & I've joined the Marinators as well.
Naturally being new I don't know all the traditions, etc, etc, so I ask the question. I'm from an AFL background & I love being at the game & hearing your team song blaring over the PA, and the supporters around you bellowing it out as well. It's particularly a buzz if you're at the Olympic Stadium and your team has just beaten the Swans & you're singing the most hated song in AFL at the top of your voice. Man it's good!
I was on the bus to the last match at Scumcastle & I was impressed by the talent for creating new chants & tunes by all those around me. I was thinking that I've never heard a Mariners theme song in the manner of the AFL, and wouldn't it be good if these talented people were to turn their minds to creating one. We could get it recorded & played at home games, we could all sing it at away games, and the supporters who aren't into chanting (and I suspect quite a few aren't) could sing along. If it's belting out from the PA you don't feel so self-conscious particularly if you're severely musically challenged.
I don't know if this idea fits in with football tradition, or even if anyone else is at all interested. If not, that's cool - I'll never know if I don't put forward.
If anyone wants to run with this, I've got a starter effort. I have all the musical ability of a wooden leg, so someone must be able to do better. Because of my afore-said ability I've just adapted a song I know really, really well ( :D):
To the tune of "Good Old Collingwood Forever":

Good old Central Coast forever,
They can really play the game,
Side by side we stand together
To uphold the Mariners name.
Hear the Marinators chanting,
Giving the other teams a roast,
Oh the Championship's a cake-walk
For the good old Central Coast.

Before you start coming out with all the Collingwood jokes, insults, etc, don't bother  :) I've been a Collingwood man for 50 years, I've heard them all before, ad nauseam.  :pirate:

spike well done its sound good i like the song. at least you will be able to sing this one more than the collingwood one. HA HA HA. Good win to the pies last night.hopefully we might get a radio station to support it maybe 2go or sea fm. Even if its not a football tradition we can always start it.

i hate collingwood more than any other AFL team, but 'good old collingwood forever' has to be the best club song in the league by some margin.

that said, it's not really the sort of thing i see the club doing, because it's so directly related to another team here, and i don't really see a 'victory song' culture growing here. i think 'that's so AFL' would be the general reaction.

Maybe so Krusty, but don't forget I've been able to sing my song more than you've been able to sing yours the last few times we've been to the matches together.  :vhappy:

I like the idea of a team song tbh. It would bring the fans who don't normally sing into the fold so to speak. Get them singing, and once they start singing that, it might not be to big a leap across to singing some other normal chants.

"Walk on,
walk on,
with a hope in your heart
and you'll never walk alone.
You'll never walk alone" ;)

I'd sing it... lol

Interesting fact that Melbourne have a club song. When we played them at the dome in round 20 it was played after the game and had the words on the big screen. Funny enough, I didn't hear anyone singing it. It had a very AFL sound to it, but seeing as Melbourne is AFL mad, thats not surprising. I think if we were to have a club song, then it should be non-AFL sounding as possible because
1) Our fan base does not have a strong AFL heritage
2) Dibo's point about "thats so AFL", something original i think would be far more popular than a re-done AFL song

I agree entirely with that particular song, the tune is too well known and (unless you're Collingwood) hated for it to be any good for our club. It was only put up to get some debate going, and encourage anyone with talent (and there a number of ppl as I heard in the bus coming back from Scumville last time) to create something more fitting.
For the league to expand and for our club to grow, we need to attract people from other codes. Children being born to football loving parents and coming to the game that way won't be enough. I would suggest we need to encourage newcomers to feel part of the action, and one way to do that could be a club song, played and sung as the team comes on to the ground. When most of the people around you are singing, you feel you want to join in and you don't feel uncomfortable if you can't hold a tune or aren't sure of the words. You enjoy it, it adds to the fun you had at the game, and you want to come back.
I don't envisage it being a "victory song" culture because it would always be sung at each match whether we win or not. Singing it after a win at the end is a good way of rubbing it in to the other mob and pissing them off, but that would only be a part of the whole.
I have seen English soccer matches, and rugby at Cardiff Arms on the TV, and hearing the crowds singing makes the hair on the back of your neck rise. I would love to experience it first hand. To add that kind of excitement to the game package could be a way of getting the outsiders to become insiders, because some of the outsiders could be expecting something similar and be disappointed if it's not there.
Dibo I appreciate your point of view. I guess you've been involved in football all your life. I haven't been (well, not this football anyway  :) ), I'm one of the outsiders who's become an insider; maybe my POV could be melded with yours and we get something terrific for all of us?

What happened Friday night was atrocious.

If you're going to stand in the bay you need to do something.
Don't think you're cool by standing in bay 16 if you don't move or
scream at all.

Then, after we went down two-nil about half of the bay left...
What happened to "Mariners 'til I die."

We need new chants, as mentioned on Friday, we continuously
look to one or two chants to get through the game.
Each one ends after about 2 or 3 minutes max and then for the
next 5 minutes there is absolutely nothing...

Oh but worst of all, 3 chants must die and never be sung again.

"Let's go Mariner's, let's go."
"You fat bastard, you fat bastard, you're shit. Arrrhhh!"
And "Get into them, bust them up."

They are horrible, they have no creation, just utterly useless and frankly diappointing.

Have no one yet noticed that from goalkicks for either team we have a new chant?
"Cen-tral-coast, olayy"

I believe we need more chants that we can dance in, for example.

"Ohhh whoa" x4
"Dada dada dada dada da da,
Dada dada dada dada da" x2

I tried bringing back disco (which obviously failed, lol)
but was always a fan of that chant, for a couple of weeks last
year we had a few people trying it and it got the bay moving for
a good minute or so, lol.

Lastly, don't stop when we're losing, that's when they need us most...

Couldn't agree more. The one I put up was purely an example to get some debate kick-started. I'm sure we have plenty of people with talent who could come up with something appropriate.

We have had this debate so many friggin times about a club song where we have suggested songs to sing such as "yellow" by Coldplay to "Im forever blowing bubbles", heck we have had songs written? I thought it was established for now that we would pump the hell out of "Yellow Football Team" as our sig chant.

Yellow football team seems to be ahead for now.

and shame, shame, shame on the wankers who tried to start "lets go" TWICE

Dont you realise that the speed it dies at is some indication that you just embarrass yourselves.

To get a team song going 2 things have to happen it has to be played through the pa system and we have to hand out the words to the song when people come in the gates. It want cost much to print up the words and all we need is people to hand them out for a couple of games.Im sure a radio station will let us record a song.
Whatever song is choosen not everybody will be happy and that is life. if we can get people to write some songs post them on here and have a vote. We have to have a closing date for this . Im not sure how to go about all this but im willing to help if somebody knows how to go about it.I think we have to try something to get the fans back in.
