Looking forward to seeing him play with us this year.

He has quite a few detractors out there now and look forward to seeing him prove them, wrong.

"Most" players blossom at Mariners. Really hoping he's one.

Mariners v Roar trial just finished on the Gold Coast...CCM 1, Roar 0 - good work lads! Rogic on 80'.

Monty got some game time, Zwaany went off late with a knock

http://www.footballaustralia.com.au/centralcoastmariners/news-display/Rogic-fires-Mariners-to-friendly-win/49335

GUN midfielder Tomas Rogic produced a classy 80th minute strike to help Central Coast Mariners to a 1-0 friendly win over Brisbane Roar on the Sunshine Coast on Sunday.

With the game looking destined to end in a goalless draw, Rogic shrugged off a challenge from Roar’s midfield linchpin Erik Paartalu ten minutes from time before firing past Brisbane custodian Michael Theo to ensure the Mariners triumphed in hot Queensland conditions.

Despite the only goal of the game coming close to full-time, the friendly fixture provided entertaining fare for the crowd at Stockland Stadium throughout, with both teams committed to playing enterprising, attacking football.

Indeed, the Mariners commenced the match on the front foot with creative midfielder Rogic giving Brisbane’s defence cause for concern.

Strong work by Josh Rose on the left side opened Rogic’s first opportunity, with the attacking midfielder’s powerful effort flying just over the crossbar. Soon after, Rogic sent a smart shot centimetres wide of Theo’s post.

Rado Vidosic’s team began to see their combinations click midway through the first half and in the 35th minute nearly scored. Ivan Franjic cut in from the right only to see his shot go just wide.

Two minutes later Mariners ‘keeper Mathew Ryan was forced into a sharp save from a Nick Fitzgerald shot, before Paartalu crossed the rebound into the box. Roar skipper Matt Smith sent his header past the post.

Less than 60 seconds later, young Central Coast attacker Mitchell Duke fired a powerful effort at Theo, however the experienced custodian did well to stop the shot.

Michael McGlinchey was the first player to go close to opening the scoring after the interval. In the 54th minute McGlinchey chipped Theo, but unfortunately for the Kiwi his delicate effort also flew over the woodwork.

Both coaches made a number of substitutions after the hour mark and this did seem to somewhat interrupt the flow of the game and the creation of clear-cut chances.

But with little life left in the match, Rogic produced a fine individual effort to win the friendly duel.

Post match Central Coast Mariners boss Graham Arnold said he was delighted with the way his team controlled the play for large portions of the game.

“I thought we dominated the game and held possession very well in really hot conditions,” Arnold said.

“Mat Ryan had a quiet day in goals and probably the only negative for us is that a few of our players suffered some slight knocks.”

“It’s nothing too serious but Patrick (Zwaanswijk), Troy (Hearfield) and Mitchell (Duke) all had to come off with minor complaints.”

“But given we played the way we did in extreme heat, I believe we are now tactically, physically and mentally ready for the first round against Western Sydney," he said.

Meanwhile, Central Coast Mariners Youth defeated Western Sydney Wanderers Youth 1-0 in Mudgee on Sunday afternoon.

Brad McDonald netted the only goal of the game just after the half-hour mark to ensure the Mariners made it two wins from two games from their tour of Mudgee.

On Friday night Central Coast Youth defeated a Western NSW Select side 10-0.

Good to see Sainsbury getting plenty of action each game, which looks like Anderson may have a hard time getting a starting berth.

Thats a good win up there!

Andersons just back form injury though isn't he? If Sainsbury is good enough to keep him on the bench great. I'd be surprised though. But wouldn't be the first time :)

Die we play 433?

Hutcho as captain I note. Bring on the scum!

Hutcho VS The Heskey.

Going to be EPIC

back to starting 11 - with the way the preseason is going i'm unsure again
thinking the backs, DM & AM are a given

as a list (including subs) I'm sure it'll be-
Maty, Pedj, Zwaany, Sains, Ando, Rose, Monty, Hutch, Glinch, Olly, Rogic, Sterj, Ibini, Duke, Kwasy, McBreen

Option most likely (start &/or subs)
Bojic - Zwaany - Sains/Ando - Rose
---------Monty/Hutch
Glinch--------------------Olly/Hutch
----------Rogic/McBreen
---Sterj/Kwas------------Ibini/Duke

Duke I feel has done enough to earn some game time, whether off the bench or a start or what.
if going with a Duke & Ibini upfroont (probably too young together to lead the line) then Sterj prob in midfield...as a right wing though that displaces Glinch who doesn't do nearly so well on the left. Either way I want Glinch in, he's gold.

What thoughts on Sterj in AM & Rogic upfront? Doubtful. Sterj can also play as a left winger but probably striker best at this stage, i really think Ibini was best when linking with the experience of Simon and Sterj may make that combo work once again...not to mention his experience combined with some nice through balls from Rogic.
My mouth's starting to water, I really don't know how I'm going to keep calm these next 2 weeks.

Be interesting to see, in the early stages i reckon there'll be much interchange off the bench between Sterj, Monty, Hutch, Ibini, Duke, Kwas & McBreen. We should see Caeceres after a few weeks on the bench also methinks

hehe, I remember one of the world cups one of the commentators kept pronouncing Caeceres so it sounded like 'cassowaries', kept me highly amused

The big question is will GA revert to a diamond midfield having played with 2 DM's in the preseason? Ive been tossing that around because olly and glinch have missed most of the preseason with injury or international duty and the lads are very familiar with the diamond having played it for 2 seasons so maybe its feasible to dedicate a preseason to learning a 2nd structure? who knows.

----------- Ryan/Pasfield -----------

Bojic/Troy - stain/ando - Pat/griff - Rose/McDonald

-------- Monty/Caeceres -- Hutch/olly --------

------------ Rogic/Mcbreen -----------

--- Sterj/troy ---- Duke/Mcbreen ---- Ibini/ kwas

can anyone think of a good roll for the glinch in a 433?

Have seen a 4-3-3 and 4-2-3-1 in preseason.

Something like this?

--------------Ryan-------------
Bojic-Sainsbury-Zwaanswijk-Rose
-----Montgomery-Hutchinson------
McGlinchey---Rogic---Sterjovski
--------------Ibini-------------

Bench: Bozanic, Kwasnik, Anderson, Pasfield

Not bad at all.

We always play better with narrow 442 but thats a good side....i'd swap Bozza for Hutcho just to give your some pace in transition.

Interesting selection headaches.

I hope Arnie picks our strongest side and doesnt let sentiment get in the way.

Arnie doesn't seem overly sentimental.

Another possible formation role for Weeemac could be...

--------------Ryan-------------
-Bojic-Sainsbury-Zwaanswijk-Rose
-----Montgomery-Weemac-----
----Bernie---Rogic---Hutch----
-------------Sterjovski-------------

Would miss Weemac out wide, but he is great under pressure, (important against Ange's pressure style of play)
and does the DM role for All whites. + Said that Monty is not the best distributor, so having weemac or Olly alongside might
be a good option.

I like this squad. It's often said that the squad dictates the system. I feel with our squad we could probably successfully
play any number of formations. Much more so than any other season.

-------------Ryan-------------
-Bojic-Sainsbury-Zwaanswijk-Rose
--Weemac---Montgomery---Olly---
----Bernie---Rogic----Sterjovski

Absolutely gobsmacked that no one, absolutely no one, has included Pellegrino in their line-up for this season. Gobsmacked :innocent: I tell ya...
