Disagree with some of the comments but perhaps I'm critical?

McDonald was rubbish in the first half, caught out of position a few times and gave the ball away, do that at senior level and he'll be in trouble. He did better when he moved to left midfield in the second half.

Porter was ok at the back but he's no centreback, please stop playing him there, he's much more effective on the wing or right back.

Gallagher was ok also, moved to left back in the second half looked happy in either role.

Musalik was ok, did a job but looked to me like he needs to lose a few kilo's, looks a right unit at the moment. A few hard challenges, good to see him get 90 minutes.

Kwas had a typical Kwas game to be fair, some nice touches, missed from 8 yards but then did very well to create the second goal, took on a defender beat him and rolled it across for a simple tap in for McDonald. As for his fitness it's only his second game back so that'll come (same as Musalik I guess)

Pellegrino however, looked lively in the first half but second half he was lazy in the number 10 role, wouldn't chase back or push too much to get himself in the right positions, I'm glad he's on a 1 year deal from what I saw today.

As for the other youths Duke was hungry and did lots of running to be fair but didn't create anything, Caceres was ok when he was on and there was no real notable performances that I could see.

A good team effort got the points, they knocked it around well at times and both keepers were not really called into action to make any mentionable saves.

Performances can get better I think.

Agree with most of this. Porter is definately not my choice for centre back but he did do the job reliably- better than I expected- so that is why I was happy with him.
I guess I didnt see the mistakes McDonald made that you saw. I think it makes a difference also if youve played or havent as to what you see. I have never played and only started watching football since around the time the Mariners started up and my son started playing so I'm very happy to be corrected.
But it is strange how different people see things differently. Everyone else was raving about how good Bernie was on wednesday night. Both my husband and I were disappointed in his performance. We felt he didnt pressure. Apart from one or two nice things and the shot that came off the woodwork, we felt he waited for the ball to land at his feet. A big difference to Simon who didnt stop all night and Amini who was able to intercept and take off. I know Bernie is only young and new and has a lot of developing but even so we saw things differently to most others on this forum.

I too thought Berni was a passenger on Wed night. Other than hitting the post he looked lost and not reading the game well. This is how I saw him in youth last year, whereas Duke was impressive every time I saw him play.

Just a question for discussion. Considering how well the first team is traveling and some of the reviews on some of the youth players should the youth team be higher on the ladder than where they are?

If they're learning roles, structures and playing patterns the right way as well as simply developing good training and matchday routines so that when the time comes they slot straight into our senior side, then I don't give a flying about the results.

Thanks to all of you for your opinions and insights - some from a glass half full, some half empty but always through glasses that are Yellow and Navy! FWIW I thought Bernie was exceptional, really lifted the tempo - But what would I know? LOL

Agreeing with everything here. How come gallagher's never played 1st team football before?...
How longs Pellegrino's contract with the first team? He was fantastic in the 1st half but in the 2nd half he looked a bit tired

The youth boys did well again...Duke, Appiah-Kubi and Caceres all starting on the bench and were all great when they came on. Played some fantastic football towards the end like they were toying with Gold Coast. Expecting all 3 of them to start next game, Which is tuesday i believe?

Duke did well, though he can be un-dimensional. I think he deserves a place on the bench as much as Kwas. Caceras looked good when he came on. Appiah-Kubi didn't have much time.

I was once again impressed with the likes of Duke and Caceres. This is the 5th nyl game that we've been to and these 2 players always perform.I like Duke's power and goal scoring ability. On the ball he's not the best but his size makes it hard for defenders.Anthony is a delight to watch. He came on the 2nd half in place of T.Rogic and made a big difference. This kid has a football brain. It won't be long till these 2 play in the a-league.

Goal scorers: Rogic (Hat Trick), Appiah-Kubi

I am anticipating that once the unfit Tomas Rogic has his body 'rebuilt' by the bio-mechanical master Clarky he will be a shoe in for the first team

Mariners up 2-0 at HT, Sammy gallagher from a corner and the black dude after an awesome flick on by duke! No rojic in the squad, might be on the bench tomorrow night
