Mariners Youth chase back-to-back Premierships Tuesday, 24 August 2010 by Glen Lauder

The Central Coast Mariners National Youth League side has come together for the first time to begin preparations, as they eye off replicating last season’s Premiership winning campaign this time around.

Head Coach Tony Walmsley liked what he saw at the side’s induction day, as he introduced seven new faces to the nine players retained from the 2009/10 campaign.
"The boys all seemed to get along really well and I’m really happy with the additions we have made this year to complement the quality players we have managed to hold on to.

"We go in to full time training next week and we have a friendly early on in the piece which will give the boys a great opportunity to show me where they are at," said Walmsley.
That Pre-Season trial will be against a Riverina Under 23’s representative side at Valentine on Wednesday night, and Walmsley is excited by the quality he has at his disposal.

"We have been lucky enough to hold on to Brady Smith despite some interest from elsewhere, along with Adam Ormsby and Nick Fitzgerald who both gained some valuable experience playing with the Bundaberg Spirit in the Queensland State League during the winter. When you add in the likes of Bernie Ibini-Isei, who was an excitement machine last season, and then Jerry Kalouris, Mitchell Mallia and Brendan Griffin, we have started with a really good base.
"Then on top of those guys we have brought in two of last season’s NYL captains in Sam Munro (Sydney FC) and Nikola Stanojevic (AIS), who are both youth internationals, plus some really talented young players like Nathan Jagelman from Marconi, Max Glanville from Northern Tigers, and Jimmy Oates from Manly United, so they will provide some raw power and competition for places up front," said Walmsley.

At the other end of the park, Walmsley has added South Coast Wolves defender Alex Mansueto and goalkeeper David Bradasevic as a replacement for his ex Blacktown City teammate Mathew Ryan, who has won a spot in the Yellow and Navy’s Hyundai A-League squad, where he will join incumbent ‘keeper Nikodin Matic.
"Those two are both Westfield Sports High boys and it highlights the strength of our relationship with Westfield, especially when you also include Niko (Matic) Bernie, Mitch Mallia and Nikola (Stanojevic)."

The side has a tough task ahead if it is to replicate the success of the class of 2009/10, and Walmsley believes the side’s work at the back will be crucial to the charge to be first past the post, in a National Youth League which has opted to do away with a finals series.
"With a season of senior football behind them the players we’ve held on will be hard to shift, but as with the first team, having competition for every position is important.

"Our goal is to try to repeat the performance of last season with an emphasis on improving our defence, and at least matching our goal percentage.
"It’s an exciting squad. We’re very technical and will be good in possession and dangerous on the counter, but we still have a lot of work to doing defensive structure, transition and combination play.

"With the addition of some of the Under 20’s players in the Hyundai A-League squad, the competition for places each week will be fierce, and Mariners Members and supporters can look forward to another season of exciting football from the youth side," said Walmsley.
Off the pitch, former Mariner Damien Brown will again assist Walmsley, while Central Coast Lightning technical director John McLafferty will also join the coaching staff.

The National Youth League draw is still to be finalised before its release by Football Federation Australia.

Mariners Youth kick-start preparations on a high Thursday, 2 September 2010 by Tony Walmsley
http://www.ccmariners.com.au/default.aspx?s=aleague_newsdisplay&id=35077
The Central Coast Mariners National Youth League side has kicked off its preparations for the 2010/11 season in the perfect fashion, with a 4-0 win over a resilient and well organised Riverina Under 23 select team at Valentine Sports Park in Sydney’s North West overnight.

The Mariners settled well with former Sydney FC Youth captain Sam Munro calling the shots in midfield and Brendan Griffin, in his second season with the Yellow and Navy, in good touch and showing a fine range of passing.

Full backs Marc Warren and Nikola Stanojevic were a constant threat down the flanks and the best move of the opening 45 minutes ended with Bernie Ibini-Isei heading against the cross-bar after a Griffin diagonal ball sent Stanojevic on the overlap to deliver a great cross.

But it was Marc Warren, a member of Graham Arnold’s Hyundai A-League squad, who broke the deadlock with a stunning 30-metre strike to send the Mariners into the break with a slender one goal lead.

Only Max Glanville and Mitchell Duke were unavailable for the Tony Walmsley’s side due to upcoming State League finals matches, but everyone else played a minimum 45 minutes.

In the second half the Mariners gave starts to David Bradasevic, Alex Mansueto, Nathan Jagelman and Jimmy Oates, the latter pair notching a goal each on debut.

Mitchell Mallia capped a fine second half display on the wing with a goal and was a constant threat with his pace and skill, as the young Mariners rounded off an impressive display with a 4-nil victory.

"I was happy with the intention of the players tonight," said Mariners NYL Head Coach Tony Walmsley.

"No-one put themselves out of the frame for selection (for the opening round match against Gold Coast United) on September 18, and there were no injuries so it was positive.

"We showed a decent amount of composure and applied a different tactical approach in each half. We missed some good chances but no complaints, as there were some very good performances," Walmsley said.

Two Mariners NYL squad players were involved in the NSW Super League Preliminary final this afternoon at Jensen Park.

Northern Tigers' Max Glanville (centre below) played a full game and terrorised the Premiers Parramatta Eagles defence.

Mitchell Duke came on for Parramatta after 35' and held his own.

Final score: Parramatta Eagles 1 (Kutaiba Elrich 14') - Northern Tigers 2 (Tom Spencer 13', 74')

(yes, Kutaiba Elrich is Tarek and Ahmad's brother)

Grand Final at the Gabbie next Sunday, NT versus St George.

I think Glanville played at Pluim in the pre season Lightning v. Mariners? Only a cameo appearance but very quick and plenty of confidence

Youngsters Primed for Coastal Raid

The Central Coast Mariners are counting down the days until they take on old foes Gold Coast United in this weekend’s opening round of the National Youth League. With a side full of familiar faces, blended in with some exciting recruits, including new captain Sam Munro, the Mariners will be hoping to get their campaign off to the best possible start.

The Young Mariners have been in promising form throughout their abbreviated pre-season, netting a solid 4-nil victory over a Riverina Under 23 select side and a 2-0 win over the Australian Institute of Sport, courtesy of late goals from Nathan Jagelman and Mustafa Amini.

Head Coach Tony Walmsley admits that whilst the preparation has been somewhat disjointed, the fact that his charges are match fit from competing in the various state leagues, and in some instances training with the first-team squad, will serve them well.

We’ve had a very limited preparation period due to state league, but in terms of what we have shown we are ok. I think we will benefit from the young first grade players who have been in full time training for some time,” said Walmsley.

With nine players from the successful 2009/10 campaign still eligible for the NYL comp this season, the Mariners have the nucleus of an extremely competitive side. Of those returning players, Mitchell Mallia, Brady Smith, Bernie Ibini-Isei, and Nicholas Fitzgerald got a taste of Hyundai A-League experience at the tail end of last season.

This underlines the fact that for the players in the NYL if they play to their potential, there are genuine chances to play professional football. Just ask current first team custodian, Mathew Ryan. Walmsley and his coaching team have recruited wisely over the off-season and on paper the squad appears very well constructed.

“The squad is very well balanced and we have added attack minded players with good pace and change of direction so we will be hard to contain.

“We will follow the first team tactically so it will be good to see how the young ones adapt,” Walmsley said.

The challenge for the class of 2010/11 is to forget the achievements of last season. Had the format that is being implemented in place of a finals series been in place last campaign, the Central Coast Mariners, not Gold Coast would be champions.

In the short history between the two clubs there have been some spectacularly entertaining clashes. Indeed the unofficial ‘Battle of the Coasts’ has quickly become one of the most intense rivalries in the NYL. There have been two come-from-behind draws from the Mariners, a seven-goal thriller on the Gold Coast, and of course the semi-final victory to the Gold Coast, which set their opponents on course to ultimately take the premiership trophy. Saturday’s game promises much of the same as both sides aim to get their respective campaigns off to the best possible start.

“The boys will be very keen to get going and I would say we are ahead of where we were 12 months ago. Gold Coast are a strong club and posed problems for us last season,” Walmsley said.

The Head Coach is far too experienced to be lulled into a false sense of security and the Mariners headmaster has got plenty of ambitions for his charges for the season ahead.

“We have worked on some team goals around performance; in defence, attack and transition, but from my point of view the measure of our success will always be in recognition of our boys at first team level,” said Walmsley.

Walmsley recognises that the NYL is first and foremost a breeding ground for the next generation of Australian players. That after all is why the National Youth League was created, to create an environment for the most talented youngsters to play against each other regularly.

“Any true development pathway needs an end product and for us it's about helping players turn pro. These are young men with talent and great potential, but they will need to show patience and dedication over a sustained period to reach their own goals.”

Sunday’s clash with Gold Coast United will be the fifth competitive clash between the two clubs.

I really hope that this season the Mariners do not use any over age players; this squad looks very good and should be encouraged to develop without disruption from the likes of Mrdja and Doig. Despite the desire to win trophies the fact is that it is more important that the team plays the right kind of football and focuses on dveloping quality players for the senior side.
Love the fact we have retained Bernie, Mallia and Kalouris; Sam Munro is an excellent acquisition and Arnie has done well raiding the stocks of the AIS. Like too that Brady Smith is still hanging in there and looking forward to seeing Max Glanville play :)

There is a role for the NYL for overage players ... playing back from injury for example or to provide some mentoring in a formation, but not to the extent we saw last season. Interestingly often the team struggled until the 60th minute when the OA went off and the youth had to come on.

Doig would be very useful in the development of our defenders reading and understanding of the game. I dont think that it was a coincidence that Wilko's has improved big time since Doig joined the club.
Mrdja is a different story.

still got plenty of the same from last season, which is good :)

hope they solve the pluim park issue - where the local grand final had people being fined for parking in the streets.. it'll turn people away.

EXCLUSIVE: Auckland City youngster Tom Doyle is one of four Australasian players selected for trials in the UK through Nike’s The Chance talent search, it’s been announced.
The three other winners were Tomas Rogic, 17, an attacking midfielder from the ACT; Nikodin Matic, 18, a goalkeeper from NSW and Alon Blumgart, 18, a central midfielder from Victoria.

I assume our Youth keeper? :)
