LB and RB don't need to be tall. they need to be quick, they need to be able to cross and they need to be able to hold their man up. even raw tackling isn't *that* vital, they've just got to be able to show their man to the sideline or the corner flag and prevent him making a run to goal or getting an easy pass or cross away.

Depends what formation you play. the modern LB or RB in a 4-3-3 need to have attributes you describe.

The pojnt I was making is simply that if you take a shorter player who has no experience at LB, and the other side sticks a tall guy on him and pumps high balls to him you cant really expect a good outcome.

The guy who he swapped with put in a really good shift and Lewis was able to play his natural game.

Lewis looked all over the place at LB on NYE as well. Just not suited.

Everyone who sees him there seems to agree except those who pick the side. At least Walmsley got the message midway through the 1st half yesterday and swapped him

From the little I saw of the youth last season Glen Trefiro was the pick; very surprised he wasn't retained. Glad for his sake that he appears to be doing well. Will definitely have a A League future

Trifiro trialled with us (I think for a first team deal?) and got turned down. Odd of him to end up at Perth NYL.

Bernie has eye on National Youth League debut

The latest signing in Tony Walmsleys National Youth League squad, 17-year-old striker Bernie Ibini-Isei is in line to make his first appearance in Yellow and Navy since joining the club at the end of December, in Saturdays Round 19 clash against the Australian Institute of Sport at Bluetongue Stadium.

The teenager, born in Nigeria and raised in Sydneys West, has come through the ranks at Football New South Wales State League club Blacktown City, and has represented his state at various schoolboy levels during his time at one of the most prestigious Sports High Schools in New South Wales, Westfield Sports High.

"I played at Blacktown City last season in the under 18s, and played a few of the Under 20s (matches), and got a great experience playing in the Under 20s there. I go to Westfield Sports High School, Ive been there since year seven and pretty much learned all my soccer there," said Ibini-Isei.

"I know Matthew Ryan, Mitchell Mallia and Nick Fitzgerald from there. I also play with Matt Ryan at Blacktown, and I was in the New South Wales team at the National All Schools in Perth last August, where I played with Mitch and Nick as well."

Ibini-Iseis arrival at Bluetongue Stadium brings the tally of players to have played at any level for Blacktown City now in either the Mariners NYL or Hyundai A-League squads, including management, to an amazing eleven.

"I trialled for the squad (at the start of the National Youth League season) and they told me theyd like me to train with the squad, and when one of the players (Panny Nikas) got called up to the first team, a spot became available.

"Im a striker, and I did pretty well last season. I was top goalscorer for my team (Blacktown City Under 18s) and scored a few for the Under 20s as well.

Ibini-Iseis Christmas came early last year after signing a short term deal to replace Nikas until the end of the season on Christmas Eve, and the 17-year-old has been forced to hit the ground running, as the National Youth League side looks to keep pace at the top of the ladder.

"Its been a great experience. Training has been a lot more intense and high paced. Id be hoping to get on the field and gain some experience, and if the team does well, thats even better," said Ibini-Isei.

The Mariners find themselves one point off top spot after 18 rounds, after giving away their advantage at the summit of the ladder following a 1-nil loss to Perth Glory at Pluim Park last Sunday, which allowed the Westerners to leapfrog Walmsleys side into first place.

Saturday represents the perfect chance to retain top position as the young Mariners come up against the Australian Institute of Sport at Bluetongue Stadium. While the AIS has failed to register a victory so far this campaign, two of their four points to date have been registered against the Mariners, making them somewhat of a bogey side, despite the significant gap between the two sides on the ladder.

"Teams near the bottom always fight hard because they have nothing to lose, so it will definitely be a tough game.

"It would be a huge difference. The stadium and the atmosphere will be amazing, so Im looking forward to it," said Ibini-Isei.

Visa not come thru according to Lawrie's twitter

I saw that and its a bugger. Wanted to see him do a million step overs, run the length of the pitch in 10 secs while doing keepy uppys to prove he had some skill.

Oh well, just the one newbie to watch hopefully.

Looked really good today although only played the second half. Did some great stuff in the muck-around at half time including a wonderful chip of the keeper. Terrific potential.

Bernie - piss off Dyron, we have a new cult hero.

17yo, no competitive games all season, debut and he looks full of promise. Unlucky not to have scored.

And no he wont be ready for the HAL for 2 or 3 years.

Funny game, more like a training run or trial really.Mind buggeringly hot, AIS pretty but pointless (typical GVE really).

At 17 he was probably lined up for next years NYL. Like we did with Bulut when we got him on board last year (and is now dominating this year).
