ACADEMY WRAP: vs. Bankstown City Lions

The Central Coast Mariners Academy kicked off their PS4 NPL2 campaign on the weekend against Bankstown City Lions at Pluim Park, Lisarow.

It was tough start to the season for the Central Coast Mariners Academy first team who suffered a 3-0 defeat at home to an experienced Bankstown City Lions outfit.

With only two players over the age of 21, it was a youthful line up including Hyundai A-League youngsters: Trent Buhagiar, Adam Berry and Tom Heward-Belle, with Bankstown City Lions starting with former Mariner, Michael Beauchamp.

It was a bright start for the Academy who had a good chance through left-winger Lachlan Wales who found the side netting in the second minute of play. Bankstown had a good chance to take an early lead when a great free kick was floated into the box, only to be headed wide.

It wasn't long before Wales was back in the thick of the action, making a break through the defence only to have his one-on-one shot sensationally blocked. It was an end-to-end affair for the first 25 minutes with both teams having a good amount of chances to take the lead.

Bankstown had a penalty shout turned down in the 25th minute when Beauchamp was pulled down in the box from a corner.

With both teams pushing hard for the opening goal of the 2016 season, it was Bankstown who had another great chance, when a curling shot was denied by a stunning diving save by Tom Heward-Belle.

With half time approaching, Bankstown hit the lead when Dean Bereveskos hit a sweet shot from just outside the box onto the crossbar and in.

Both teams came out firing in the second half and it wasn't long before Bankstown could've gone two ahead with Gerard Ouffoue getting in behind the Academy defence putting himself one-on-one with Heward-Belle, only to put his shot into the side netting.

The Lions were very close to doubling their lead once again 3 minutes later when a low cross was flicked on but it was Heward-Belle again who made a point blank save.

It seemed that the Mariners Academy had weathered the storm of Bankstown, when the middle stages of the second half seemed to even out. But it wasn't for long, when a free kick floated into the box and headed home by Grant Lynch who doubled the lead in the 72nd minute.

The Academy pushed hard to find a goal that would've kept them in the mix it but failed to find the back of the net. A tough night got even tougher when centre back and captain, Liam Odell brought down Bankstown City’s striker in the box. The penalty was slotted home to make it 3-0 to the visitors and victors, Bankstown City Lions.

Central Coast Mariners Academy will be back in action next Saturday afternoon against St. George at the St. George soccer stadium. CCMA’s Next home game is Saturday 19 March vs. Macarthur Rams, Pluim Park Lisarow, 6:30pm.

St George v Central Coast Mariners

Two goals in the last quarter of an hour secured a win for Central Coast Mariners in a match of many chances, and the surprise was that only three were scored.

Trent Buhagiar headed wide for the visitors, by only centimetres twenty-five minutes in, a chance which really should have been taken, before Bruno Pivato, determinedly won possession high up the park before slotting under Thomas Heward-Belle to give the Saints a half time lead.

Despite some persistent Mariners pressure for large parts of the second period, it seemed that St George may last out the match but Brian Jamba made the pressure count in the end, scoring the leveller with fourteen minutes to go.

A Saints rally saw Nicholas Rouco, Tarek Ercan and Pivato all have close chances but it was a later charge by the Mariners which saw them gain the winner. Buhagiar, heading clear on goal was brought down just outside the box by Johnathan Kontalis, the referee having little option but to issue a straight red.

Off went Kontalis, and up stepped Reece Papadimitrios, who neatly directed his free kick over the wall and into the top right hand corner.

Are players such as Fletcher, Heffernan, Stella, Uskok, Bray etc - who all havent had a lot of game time this season, eligible for this new deal in the NPL2 once the HAL has wrapped up in 3 weeks ???

IF so, is there a limit to how many can play, as was the case in the old NYL with the overage players ???

The opposition teams are fielding full strength Senior sides.

Or is it strictly just the Youth players playing ???

a) To be eligible to participate in a 2016 1st Grade or U20 team the player must:

i. Be born between 1 January 1996 and 31 December 2000 (inclusive); and

ii. Be an Australian Player as defined by the Hyundai A-League & Foxtel National Youth League Player Contract Regulations 2015/2016.

b) An HAL Academy Team may register up to three (3) Players to their PlayStation 4 NPL 2 NSW 1st Grade team roster who are older than the eligible age bracket as prescribed in 6.2 a) where the following criteria are satisfied in respect to that player:

i. Be born between 1 January 1993 and 31 December 1995 (inclusive); and

ii. The player must be an Australian Player as defined in the Hyundai A-League & Foxtel National Youth League Player Contract Regulations 2015/2016; and

iii. The player must have appeared in the starting eleven (11) in no more than ten (10) matches during the 2015/2016 Hyundai A-League season for any Hyundai A-League Club; and

a. the Player is currently registered with the NYL Team’s Hyundai A-League Club on a Standard Player Contract; or

b. the Player’s immediately prior registration was as an NYL amateur for the NYL 2015/16 season.

Bit confused with the age specifics.

Does it mean max of 3 of the A-League players can be registered, as long as their each no older than 23yo & also havent started in more than 10 HAL games ?

I'm not sure of players ages, but if between 20 & 23, a player such as Stella, Uskok, Bingham maybe (I don't think he has started more than 10 games) would be eligible.

Because there's a big difference there.
