The NYL is being overhauled:

• Season reduced from 18 rounds to 8 + finals, starting on 7 November
• Two pools of five teams (most likely us/Jets/SFC/WSW/FFA CoE & Roar/MV/City/AU/PG), each playing home and away once
• Grand final to be played in late January
• Teams to then participate in 2016 NPL starting in February/March

Double edged sword for A-League clubs.

Reuced cost$ for running their Youth League squads, however

Reduced opportunities for fringe starting 11 A-League players to prove themselves to push for a spot on the team sheet as well as keeping up fitness levels with competitive 90 min games in their legs.

Same applies for players who WERE regular starting 11 but suffers injury and needs to 'work' their way back into the 1st grade squad.

This is the only real con to the overhaul, there is now no real opportunity for an overage player to regain match fitness following a long term injury. Cost savings to the clubs would far outweigh this though, with the 20s squads playing NPL firsts in winter so they still get plenty of training/gametime in a calendar year and also "should" open more opportunities for coast kids to come through the system.

So Brice Johnsons' going to have his work cut out for him keeping 'non-playing squad'ies' & prospective 1st Team Youth players 'match-fit' ready when called upon. As well as re-habbing injured guys back to match fitness with less games now available.

With State Leagues done & dusted. More Intra-club 11 v 11 games? with ALL the Youth included in these games perhaps?

Leagues have been declared, no real surprises:

• CCMFC replaces CCF
• Men in NPLM 2
• Women relegated to NPLW 2
• Youth in NPLY Tier 1 (covering 26 clubs whose men are in NPLM 1 or NPLM 2)
• SAP in... SAP

Well then FNSW need to clarify which one is correct. I found the one I linked to on the Circulars and Memos page, which one would ordinarily assume to be correct.

NYL calendar starts about 3 weeks after the A-League in November, goes through to January. NPL clubs will start playing trials by February and competition in March, shouldn't be too much of a gap in game time for squad players. Will likely save the owner about $150k however you would think this would have to be put back into the NPL Academy structure.

"Following the completion of the shortened National Youth League competition, every youth team will then compete in the 26-week National Premier League structures in their relevant state which begin in February or early March.

The move has been made to allow a more streamlined approach to youth development in Australia where the best young players will remain with their A-League clubs' youth teams for an extended time and for more games. The National Youth League teams of each A-League club will take part in the senior divisions of the state premier league structures, allowing the best youth players to play against adults as well as older teenagers."

Q?- So after NYL fixtures/finals have finished, will the CCM side be playing NPL1 or NPL2?

NPL2, because the NPL1 sides don't think they should get a free pass up into NPL1.

Same happened in Victoria, where City and Victory went into the second tier (NPL1 East for Victory and NPL1 West for City) in their first season.

The top-tier clubs might have a point, neither side won their divisions - Victory are in a promotion playoff against the 3rd from bottom side and City finished mid-table.

NPL2, because the NPL1 sides don't think they should get a free pass up into NPL1.

This seems a backward step for NYL player development from the FFA.

They should have wielded their power and demanded ALL A-League clubs NYL teams play NPL1 in every State. This sets the stage where SOME A-League clubs will (future) play in the NPL1 and SOME might not ever, if they dont 'win promotion'

Under the old system A-League clubs could loan out NYL (& fringe over-age players) to NPL1 teams in the off season to help develop them further.

It now appears that at the outset of this first season of the revised syetem, NYL players are 'locked' into the NPL2 comp when there 'supposed' to be the best youth in the country (that's why A-League club's sign them)

Whereas there are youth (with the best adults as well) playing 'above' them (NYL players) - in the NPL1 comp who 'aren't' good enough to be signed by A-League clubs (but some could be).

How are A-League clubs able to compare their best youth (NYL) against the next best youth/& or adults IF they're playing a division down ???

Then there's also the probably 'not considered' aspect of promo/relegation.

Sydney FC NYL earn promotion to NPL1
CCMariners NYL stay in NPL2
Newcastle Jets NYL get relegated down NPL3.

If your a Jets NYL player do you want 'out' of your contract to go play for an NPL1 club because your not playing against the best opposition to develop yourself OR do you hang around hoping an opportunity comes up with the A-League first team thru injury etc ???

A-League clubs having to put money into a youth system like this to hopefully create first team players is just ludicrous.

Newcastle Jets NYL get relegated down NPL3.

It would be a nice thought... but the Jets play in the NNSW NPL, and I can't imagine they'd ever get punted down to 1st Division.

Well insert the WSW instead, it's still a scenario that 'could' happen ...... & that's shit for ANY A-League club.
