ACADEMY WRAP: vs. Macarthur Rams
The Central Coast Mariners Academy celebrated back-to-back wins at the weekend after their impressive 2-0 victory over the Macarthur Rams at Pluim Park on Saturday night thanks to strikes by Adam Berry & Lachie Wales in the PS4 NPL 2.
Central Coast Mariners 2 (Adam Berry 50' & Lachlan Wales 83') v Macarthur Rams 0

The opening 30 minutes of play were quite even with both teams getting a feel for each other with no real chances created. The Academy had the first real opportunity of the match when Steve Whyte played a great ball through to Wales who squared it up to Berry but the midfielder’s shot was just off target.

The Academy struck again just three minutes later when Wales again squared the ball across the top of the box to Reece Papadimitrios, who couldn't find the target from just outside the 18-yard box.

The Mini Mariners continued their first half domination towards the back end of the first half, when Papadimtrios played a smart ball to Berry who's shot was smartly tipped over by Rams’ shot stopper Jair Fernandez.

The home side had another chance to take the lead in the 43rd minute when Brian Jamba played a ball to Ryan Peterson, who found Papadimtrios only to have his shot again tipped over the bar.

Macarthur Rams almost scored against the run of play before the break when a long ball from the Rams' keeper was misjudged which allowed their striker in behind to hit a half volley, which was very well saved by Adam Pearce.

It wasn't long into the second half before the Academy found themselves 1-0 up after Steve Whyte's great run into the edge of the box was smartly played into Berry who found the top corner in the 50th minute.

The Mini Mariners went close to doubling their lead in the 63rd minute when Steve Whyte's shot took a deflection but was smartly saved by the Rams’ keeper.

Chances were few and far between from then on in and it wasn't until the 83rd minute when Cade Mapu made a bursting run down the sideline and into the box, who then played the ball into an unmarked Wales on the edge of the box Wales produced a classy finish and provided a two goal buffer for his team with less than 10 minutes remaining.

The Mariners Academy will be back in action next weekend at Pluim Park vs. Bankstown Berries.

ACADEMY WRAP: vs. Bankstown Berries

The Central Coast Mariners Academy recorded their third win in as many weeks with a 3-1 victory over the Bankstown Berries thanks to goals by Lachlan Wales, Liam O’Dell & Trent Buhagiar in the PS4 NPL 2.
Central Coast Mariners 3 (Lachlan Wales 33’, Liam O’Dell 45’, Trent Buhagiar 46’) v Bankstown Berries 1 (Nicholas Paras 73’)

It's was Friday night football this week at Valentine Sports Park after the fixture had been re-scheduled from Pluim Park due to unforeseen pitch maintenance.

Ben Cahn's team started on top when left back Christopher Hurley sent a deep cross to the back of the box that Lachlan Wales half volleyed just wide of goal.

Bankstown Berries had a great chance to go ahead in the 18th minute when the striker found himself one-on-one with Heward-Belle who smartly saved the shot, to then save again seconds later.

It was the Academy who took the lead in the 35th minute when Wales played a smart ball to youngster Cade Mapu who then played the ball back into Wales' path. Wales made no mistake with the finish, blasting his effort into the top corner.

Bankstown had a chance to head into the break on even terms just before half time when a corner found an unmarked man who sent his effort straight into Heward-Belle's waiting hands.

It was a set piece that allowed the Mini Mariners to double their lead when Buhagiar delivered a pin point corner that found Liam O’Dell. The skipper headed home and the Mariners were two up at half time.

The Mariners Academy came out of the sheds firing and Nathan Verity’s through ball to Buhagiar drew the keeper off his line, which allowed Buhagiar to chip home for the side’s third goal of the evening.

Academy midfielder Reece Papadimtrios who had been providing Wales with some great balls over the top for most of the night, nearly found himself on the score sheet in 72nd minute when his shot from just outside the box cleared the crossbar.

Bankstown bagged a consolation in the 74th minute when a challenge from Verity resulted in a free kick, just outside the box. Bankstown’s number 10 Nicholas Paras curled his free kick into the bottom corner.

Next week the Cetnral Coast Mariners will head to Fraser Park for an away fixture against Fraser Park FC.

ACADEMY WRAP: Mariners fall to Fraser Park

The Central Coast Mariners Academy suffered just their second loss of the season with the boys going down 3-1 to Branko Culina’s Fraser Park.
The Mariners Academy started the match with pace to burn up front with Trent Buhagiar, Josh Bingham and Lachlan Wales all featuring in the front third.

Fraser Park had the first chance of the match when a free kick was well saved by Tom Heward-Belle in the 12th minute.

The Academy had a great opportunity to strike first when a pin point Reece Papadimtrios free kick found his skipper, Liam O'Dell who couldn't quite put his header on target from a good position just outside the six yard box in the 22nd minute.

A great run from Fraser Park’s winger nearly saw them take the lead in the 34th minute when it found the head of Nicholas Dimitropoulos who put his effort wide of Heward-Belle’s goal.

Academy’s Lachlan Wales had a great chance to bag a goal just before the break when he found himself in a great position just inside the edge of the 18-yard-box, but couldn't get his effort past a diving Wayne Estevao.

Academy Head Coach Ben Cahn's half time words looked to spur his players on, the Academy came out firing and took the lead in the 48th minute via a brilliant finish from O’Dell who turned in a first time strike from a Papadimtrios free kick.

Fraser Park nearly leveled proceedings in the 51st minute when a defensive lapse handed the ball to Fraser Park in attack but Verity recovered well and won the ball back.

The Mariners Academy went close to doubling their lead in the 53rd minute when Buhagiar found the feet of Ryan Peterson just inside the penalty area, but put his shot just wide.

Fraser found themselves with a penalty in the 57th minute when Verity was controversially called to have hand balled in the box. Peter Crevani stepped up for the home team and made no mistake with his spot kick.

The home side shot to the lead in the 61st minute when a cut back from the winger found Crevani on the edge of the box who doubled his tally for the night.

The game was sealed in the 83rd minute when Kevin Oliveria found Nathan Sansom who calmly finished from close range to make it 3-1 in favour of Fraser Park

I can't imagine either Buhagiar nor Bingham have spent much time (if any) training with the NPL squad, makes it hard to have an instant impact. I'm sure both will shine as the season progresses. Remember that the academy is more about player development than results, given the age restrictions imposed.

Nor really. Just like in the HAL ....... it's all about the service. Give it some time and Im sure the goals will come as Yoda pointed out.

It's great that Bingo has qualified for the NPL2 by not racking up too many starts in the HAL as this will give him plenty of game-time to hone his skills.

Likewise, I'm hoping Tommi Uskok will be eligible as well if the club decides to retain him for next season. He really needs to step it up a gear if he's wants to play a major role with the first team next season.
