Songs 'N Chants

Well I've not started off with a popular one, it seems, haha.

Is there a particular reason for the dislike (literally)?

I feel (apart from the obvious) it has an anthemy feel, and passionate lyrics.

For mine, it was probably one of the most confusing walk-out songs we've had... It's really hard to follow the beat as a group because of stuff like the sort-of-syncopation at times... It's just never going to be a sing-along type song I think.... I reckon we should go with "Yellow Submarine" - might make it easier for Pete to get the chant up during the game as well ;)

Thoughts on Yellow by Coldplay as a walkout song?
Welcome

To me we should just drop it full stop. We have such a variation of ages you will never make everyone happy

That and the speaker system is so crap it ruins every noise coming out of it and half the stadium can’t hear it. Fix that and we can try again.

Personally don’t like coldplay.

The thing that worked for Heart, even though So Happy Together was not loved by everyone in the beginning. Was that it was consistent every week, season to season and the P.A. at AAMI Park could pump it loud. I think if the council ever gets round to getting a good sound system we then need to pick a song and stick with it till the end of time, no matter what it is thought initially or there after.

Good to hear differing thoughts!

Personally, I've found Yellow Submarine to be... childish, maybe? The lyrics don't really evoke much passion.

Happy to go with the majority, but I think it's important to have a tradition, that builds over time (not to mention I believe it's an FFA requirement).

If any work needs to go into it (or any other club traditions), I'm always more than happy to contribute.

I don't like either Coldplays yellow or yellow submarine.

My idea is that the walk out song is sorta like a call to arms, uplifting, invoking passion, with easy to sing lyrics. Both songs above do neither for me.

IMHO, Victory nailed theirs with Stand by Me.

Whatever it is, there are 2 things that need to happen in order for it to work.

1. The speaker system at the ground need to be up and working.

2. The yellow army get behind and lead it

I remember being in Olympic Stadium a few years ago when we played Uzbekhistan. "Thunderstruck" was belting out, the crowd was chanting THUN--DER and stamping their feet. You could feel the stadium vibrating and the hairs on the back of my neck were standing up. For mine, that's the kind of walk-out we need, stir everybody up, including the players.

We had the answer and reply going tonight with 'who do you sing for' . Gave me the goosies a bit with the way the game was going

I reckon if YA had of done that chant right after the second goal the smurfs would have wet themselves down the other end !

Just need to stop picking Paulo songs.

Elvis was trash and what about when he leaves in the future, then we are stuck with his memory. He may leave on good terms but he will get head hunted by the big teams if we can keep playing like Friday.

It was a funny moment but we should leave it at that

Agree that it should be epic and rousing, as Thunderstruck is.

It doesn't matter what the song is or even if everyone likes it - we'd all come to love it over time when we associate it with our club and passionate home games.

Thus sticking with it would be key.

Rousing
Catchy
Loud
Consistent
Go!

That wasn't totally a Paolo thing. We've used it on and off for about 8 years in active, and it was actually decent when we had numbers behind it.

I really liked the idea behind "Welcome to the Jungle" but a sing-along chant it ain't.
I'm loving "Dont Stop Me Now" too actually and it's easier to sing along to. But very little of what is being named has the YNWA-type belt-along potential.
