Songs 'N Chants

People putting forward their ideas and then narrowing them down and ultimately choosing their preference - is not my understanding of being forced...? I thought it was the human races best attempt at being fair and working together to get a desired result - the greater will - whatever it may be - determining the result?

And ultimately it's the same process that takes place when someone starts a chant at a game, people vote by choosing to join in or not, the greater will - whatever it may be - will determine the result.

But when it comes to an anthem... Wow, I'm all for a spontaneous organic birth...
But forgive me if I don't share Keensy's confidence, that it will just "happen" one day.

Does anyone really think that the worlds great anthems, or even the crap ones for that matter, just happened one day? You don't think much forethought or discussion went into the bulk of them? As said I'm genuinely all for spontaneous brilliance, I just hope a Mozart happens along on the same day as Bob Dylan and is in the mood for "a bit of a song" somewhere in the next five to ten years...

Otherwise a collective group with the same interests at heart working to get the best from something, is imho the best chance you have of doing something special.

Anything discussed or "voted" upon would still undergo the same process of acceptance as everything else does at the stadium, and then even if it's loved by the bay, it then still has to win the hearts/be voted for by the rest of the stadium and really even the greater community if its going to truly be a good anthem for the club.

Otherwise, well...as the bard said - "nothing can come of nothing"

Great post.

Personally, I'd love CCM to have an anthem like YNWA, etc. I think it would be a fantastic way to fire up the entire crowd before and/or after every home match and make our home really intimidating for visiting teams. Plus, once the crowd get their vocal cords warmed up, all singing in unison, you never know: there could be a flow-on effect for the whole 90mins.

However, I am well aware that the topic has been raised from time to time, and the underlying message - as with most things - is that "You will never come up with something that everyone agrees with".

This is not entirely a bad thing; hopefully the reason people are happy to voice an objection to something is because they're so passionate about the Mariners; No-one wants to see the Mariners adopt an "official" song that a significant portion of the fans are going to loathe. No-one (the club, the stadium, the writer and performers of the song, or the fans) would see any benefit in that happening.

So it's great to see this recent surge of constructive, proactive discussion on this topic. Some great posts and suggestions.

As FootballSensei suggested, ( ;)), it wouldn't be impossible to make this happen. I'm sure the Mariners Club and Stadium Management would go for it, and possibly even more so if the suggestion/s come from a consensus of passionate supporters. So IMO The more discussion that happens the better. How much would it suck if some marketing company was hired to commission a club song & video clip package?  :vomit:

Great post Floss. I think having discussion and dialogue is crucial to the positive development of most things, especially creative ones and I hope most feel the same and that things can keep developing...

But hey, footballsensei...? lol,
its abot the flow floss...the flow... it's all about the flow  :innocent:
(I did honestly consider this point quite strongly when I registered ;))

Rework the lyrics of 'Flower of Scotland' perhaps??  Fits in with our coaching staff and the whole bagpipe capers..... first line could easily be "O Ceeentraaal Cooooooast", and then so on.  Drop in references to beating Newcastle and Sydney and such??

O Flower of Scotland,
When will we see,
Your like again,
That fought and died for,
Your wee bit Hill and Glen,
And stood against him,
Proud Edward's Army,
And sent him homeward,
Tae think again.

Good idea but what happens when Lawrie goes?  Great idea whilst we have he and Fergie though

I understand where you're coming from, but maybe by the time Lawrie goes (not for a while surely??) the song is already ingrained into the culture of our support??  Gerry and the Pacemakers are long gone, but Liverpool still sing YNWA, y'know??

Lots of ideas etc - but with 2 weeks to go b4 the season starts, how do you get the idea of a song (with scarves up of course) off the ground ready for SFC?
Where do we take this to make it happen - otherwise it's all yadda yadda.
Do we even have to adapt words - only need a strong, "hairs stand on the back of your neck" song. Do you need permission to use artists songs? or can we just give the CD to the ground announcer and say play this at the beginning of each home same and rev the crowd up just prior to playing it..
*throws my arms up* I'm sending this one up the chain - over to you guys. :eek:verhead:

What about - "We are sailing" by Rod Stewart, or Mull of Kintye?
Scarves up !!!!

I am sailing is a pretty easy 1 and not a bad suggestion

I am sailing, I am sailing,
Home again cross the sea.
I am sailing, stormy waters,
To be near you, to be free.

I am flying, I am flying,
Like a bird cross the sky.
I am flying, passing high clouds,
To be with you, to be free.

Can you hear me, can you hear me
Thro the dark night, far away,
I am dying, forever trying,
To be with you, who can say.

Can you hear me, can you hear me,
Thro the dark night far away.
I am dying, forever trying,
To be with you, who can say.

We are sailing, we are sailing,
Home again cross the sea.
We are sailing stormy waters,
To be near you, to be free.
If Lawrie and Fergie catch you singing that they'll string ye up............it's a Celtic song!  ::)

1. I'd expect this to be a much longer-term project than that. ASAP would be nice, but fact is it is destined to fail unless a huge portion of the crowd are supportive of the song. I guarantee some people who are not involved in a hurried decision would object to the result, and it would not last a whole season if enough people refuse to partake because they don;t like it. It will also hamper any future effort to "learn from the mistakes"

2. Any "official" club song would have to be adopted by the Mariners club. IMO it would be a bit presumptuous for the Marinators or any other person / group from the supporter base to take on responsibility for the entire decision on behalf of all supporters, and bypass the CCM in the process. However, I think this forum is a great place to start with some initial "market research". Anyone can have a say, and you'll find out quickly enough whether or not a lot of others agree with it. At the very least I'm sure it would be possible to come up with a shortlist of "possibles" and some definite "no-ways" by looking back over the forum. At best: IF a song or a shortlist was agreed upon, and you could show that you have had input and support from a significant cross-section of supporters, THEN I'm sure it would be easy enough to take the suggestion to the CCM and work from there.

3. That's a matter of personal opinion and taste.
(BTW it's also my opinion that changing the words, or writing an original song with lyrics that are too specific, would sound pretty tacky.)

4. Yes, the playing of a song at the ground, and use in promotional material and broadcasts, would require a hefty fee.
However, a portion of this is for use of the song (it ends up in the hands of the songwriter) and part is for the recording (goes to the performer & record company). So, with some help from generous people in the music and recording industry (for which the Central Coast is actually a bit of a hub) - this aspect can possibly become a little more affordable. Again, I'm not sure if an original song would work as well a something more "traditional". But even if we were to go for a classic, there could be benefits in having it covered by someone.

Good post Floss.

IMHO, any anthem must be "adopted" and not forced on supporters as part of a marketing exercise.  My suggestion.

A few likely ones get a run at games this season (away too) and the one that seems to "stick" can be firmed up.

If it starts with us and then gets sung at the ground, pubs and even at post match functions, it will catch on over time (a few seasons). I doubt Anfield went from zero to 50,000 people singing YMWA in one game??

Away games are where we all come together from all parts of the ground and these things can spread.

Scum away seems as good a place to start as any.
