Sheffield sends a bloke over

Blades fans are welcome (even though I was raised in Sheffield and was an Owls supporter - ask your old mates about Tony Kay...) :innocent: . Monty's work ethic sounds perfect for the Mariners who work hard for each other and are very much a team unit and pride themselves on their mean defence. His tackling style will be interesting as some Australian referees believe football is a non-contact sport. He will be in good hands fitness wise as the Mariners have an outstanding fitness coach in Andrew Clark who is brilliant at rebuilding broken bodies - and the Mariners had the best record last year of the fewest games missed by any team through injury.
He should enjoy life on the Coast - about 365 more days of sunshine than Bramhall Lane :D
Welcome again :eek:verhead:

Former Blade to carve A-League?
Nick Montgomery

SYDNEY FC has delivered the great Alessandro Del Piero but previous international arrivals have proven that star-status is not necessarily required to dominate Australia’s top flight.

Foreign imports including the likes of Thomas Broich and Marcos Flores have pursued careers in the Hyundai A-League, and both have won the Johnny Warren Medal. But who were they before they came to Australia and who is Nick Montgomery?

Montgomery is the Mariners’ newest recruit and he will arrive on the Central Coast this week from English side Sheffield United. He boasts over 400 competitive appearances for ‘the Blades’ and is a relatively unfamiliar name to many Australian football fans.

Broich starred for numerous Bundesliga clubs, however unfortunately failed to capitalise on his immense potential on the international stage. Despite being touted as a future German international early in his career, and making appearances alongside the likes of Bastian Schweinsteiger and Lukas Podolski, injury hindered any chances that arose for Broich to play for his nation. When he joined Roar few Australian football fans were familiar with the former Nurnberg attacker.

Argentinean Marcos Flores was also an unknown quantity to most of the Australian public when he arrived at Adelaide United. But, like Broich in Brisbane, Flores featured prominently in the Hyundai A-League. He is tipped to light up the competition with Melbourne Victory this season.

On the back of the (deserved) Del Piero hysteria, Montgomery will arrive at Sydney Airport early on Wednesday morning. His reception will be more humble than ADP’s, however he will address local media on the Central Coast later in the day.

Like Broich and Flores, Montgomery won’t arrive to immediate fanfare. But, should he be able to overcome Australia’s summer climate, there is the possibility he will be able to become one of the A-League newest stars. His stats certainly suggest he could be one of the competition’s top players this term.

After 13 seasons, two Cup semi-finals and three excruciating play-off campaigns with Sheffield United, Montgomery will bring the experience of battle from Bramall Lane to the Central Coast for all to see. This week, Montgomery proudly declared that he will “always wear the bumps, bruises and broken bones as badges of pride” from his career in England.

Coach Graham Arnold is excited to get Montgomery on board and knows that his presence will bring plenty of positives to the Mariners unit.

“Nick’s pedigree speaks for itself and at 30 some of his strongest years of football are still in front of him. He is fit having undergone pre-season with Sheffield United and we look forward to him arriving on the Central Coast,” Arnold said.

Aside from football, Montgomery is looking forward to life on the Central Coast, which will help his immersion into one of the most unique football competitions in the world.

"There were numerous options available," he said. "I've turned down other offers and there was an enquiry from the MLS in America but both (wife) Josie and I have friends in Australia and this is a chance of a lifetime, amazing opportunity to experience something new."

Montgomery has experienced honourable exit from Sheffield United which included a farewell at the weekend when the Blades played Bury at Bramall Lane. Over 16,000 fans turned out to wish him goodbye.

Recently Montgomery has expressed his excitement at arriving on the Central Coast and could not have spoken more highly of the Mariners as a professional outfit.

“The Mariners might not be the biggest name in the competition but they are one of the most well-run and professional clubs.

“The facilities there are absolutely superb and they’re very serious about what they do. There are some really good players going out there now, Alessandro Del Piero has just joined Sydney, and Mariners are involved in the Asian Champions League,” he said.

With kick off to the season just a few weeks away, fans are eager to see the impact ‘Monty’ will have on not just the team, but also the league. He won’t capture front page of the Herald or Telegraph tomorrow but with 27 regular seasons rounds to be played he will have plenty of chances to make headlines.

Reading this makes me so fired up for the season to start! :eek:verhead: I can't wait to see him in action, he is looking more and more likely to be a perfect fit for the Mariners team this season.

Heyup lads, Blade fan coming in peace!

Monty's a great guy, his work ethic is second to none and the passion he shows in the shirt. He is a huge help to the defence and will allow your other CM get more forward...dont ask Monty to shoot though! (that link to his screamer against Tranmere...he was probably passing) His passing also leaves a LOT to be desired but ask him to keep it simple and so long as your other CM always gives him an option he shoudln't be too bad.

Expect plenty of hard tackles but not dirty, to say the role he played for us he didn't get sent off very often at all...although he does occasionally get your heart in your mouth when he comes flying in from out of nowhere and either gets the ball cleanly (and sends the pother player flyng) or misses ball and player. You speek about him looking tough, imagine when we had him as a defensive mid and a defensive trio of Chris Morgan, David Unsworth and Craig Short with Neil Shipperly up front-the opposition would s##t themselves! (google 'em n you'll know what I mean!). A friend of mine met Frank Lampard the summer after we got rlegated (about 5years ago now) and got talking to him, when Frank found out he was a Blade he said "I'm not just saying this because you're a Blade, as one of the easiest games I've ever had was when we played you at Stamford Bridge. But when we played at Bramall Lane that was the toughest game of the season for me, you'd told Nick Montgomery to man mark me and I couldn't shrug him off all game, I couldn't play against him".

Unfortunately Montys last couple of seasons have been plagued by niggling injuries and he's starting to lose his stamina so he can only run & run now, not run & run & run. I hope there behind him and you get a good 2/3+ years out of him.

He's a great bloke and deserves all the luck he get's. A fresh start in Oz should be good for him so he can leave the troubles he's had back here behind him. He goes with 99.9% of our fan's blessing for beuing a loyal servant to the club from championship to premiership and all the way down to league one.

I'll be checking back to see how you and Monty are getting on...and looking out for you on the A-league highlights we get over here with a legendary Aussie footballer as commentator (apparently). Don't know who he is but he looks like the bald chef off Ausstralian Masterchef!?

GOOD LUCK MONTY!

Great to hear from you mate.

Monty will hopefully be a godsend.

P.S. I enjoyed reading about the exploits of the BBC recently, very entertaining if not a little bit far fetched occasionally....lets face it Leeds were always in a different league on and off the pitch.

Before my time, football hooliganism was just coming to an end when I started going to football...although I can remember Leeds fans ripping the seets out of the away end because we beat 'em twice in the cup one season (when they were a league above us).

Monty said goodbye to us on Saturday and he got a great reception (...got to 2mins30secs on the link) My link

it's a big call . but i think between monty and sterjofki. it's our year for the toilet seat.

I'd like to think that you're right. I actually expect us to reverse the trend this year and pick up someone in the January window, moving one of the young guys to an outside the 23 and outside the cap status but still part of the first squad.

The reason for this is threefold. Firstly to make a statement that with the new TV deal while we are still a club that will sell players for them to promote their careers, we are no longer needing to sell even if it lessens our chances in the HAL. Secondly, I think that GA will be looking to strengthen the squad, for the run home, but also for our next ACL campaign and the following season. I would expect this player to be McBreen's replacement as Daniel will be 36 by the end of the season. Thirdly, there are a lot of players coming off contract at the end of the season and it would be prudent to look at their replacements (especially the retiring players) so that the younger players can see a continuing strong club and will look to re-sign.

For this last reason, also look at a replacement for Patrick to be picked up in much the same way.
