Sheffield sends a bloke over

I'm an idiot savant without the pesky savant bit
Given the less than sterling results the Mariners have had with pom's that have come over to play at Stade De Mariner (Nicky Travis, Shane Huke, Jon Sutton, Chris Doig )...here's hoping that this bloke lives up to his hype.....

CENTRAL Coast Mariners can announce the club has agreed to terms with highly experienced defensive midfielder Nick Montgomery for the forthcoming Hyundai A-League season.

Montgomery will arrive at Central Coast from UK partner club Sheffield United after Blades Chairman and Mariners Director, Mr Kevin McCabe, played an instrumental role in endorsing the Mariners club and culture to the player.

Montgomery, 30, is a Sheffield United legend having progressed through the club’s youth ranks before making over 400 competitive appearances for Sheffield’s first team.

Montgomery’s time with the Blades saw him feature in the Barclays Premier League as well as extensively in England’s tough and competitive second tier, currently known as the nPower Championship.

Central Coast Mariners Head Coach Graham Arnold said he believes Montgomery is the perfect addition to his squad.

“All my contacts in the UK can’t speak highly enough of Nick Montgomery,” Arnold said. “He is a winner, a leader, and having lost Alex Wilkinson and Matt Simon recently, I knew it was crucial that we brought in a player who can influence not only a game, but the group as well.”

“Nick’s pedigree speaks for itself and at 30 some of his strongest years of football are still in front of him. He is fit having undergone pre-season with Sheffield United and we look forward to him arriving on the Central Coast shortly.”

Central Coast Mariners Chairman, Mr Peter Turnbull, thanked Mr McCabe for assisting the Mariners in acquiring Montgomery’s services.

“Kevin (McCabe) helped no end in making this deal a reality and we appreciate his support,” Turnbull said. “In fact, with Kevin’s help Nick has chosen to sign with Central Coast in favour of offers from clubs in England top three tiers, and teams in the United States.”

“We are all very impressed with Nick’s record as a one club player, as Sheffield United captain, and as a true community leader. These are all aspects we look for when looking for players to join our club,” he said.

Meanwhile, Montgomery told Sheffield United’s official website he is looking forward to commencing with Central Coast.

"There were numerous options available," he said. "I've turned down other offers and there was an enquiry from the MLS in America but both (wife) Josie and I have friends in Australia and this is a chance of a lifetime, amazing opportunity to experience something new."

Sounds like the perfect signing to me and the perfect foil for Rogic.

Travis had a lot of quality as a player but was a tool.
Huke was crap apart from one game.
Doig was a very solid player, who I would have loved to have had here in his twenties.
Sutton was pretty crap overall.

Not one of them was ever presented to us as a top line player.

I have a feeling Monty could be the signing of the season.

All will be revealed when we see him on the paddock.

I've heard that passing is not his strong point but defensively he is a beast. Great for our back 2 but not good news for rogic. Also he just runs & runs & runs & runs. Can't wait to see how he fits in. Awesome to have another leader in the squad.

That kind of work output an make a considerable difference, losing Matty really showed it

Passing wasn't Jedi's strong point either but who amonst us wouldn't sell their grandmother to have Jedi back in the team? Love the "beast" rhetoric... I'm salavating at the prospect!

Not sure I am happy with not having a ball playing DM.... even if he runs all day...

I dont remember us ever having a ball playing DM. Rostyn played to feet but his distribution was very slow.

I'm excited by the prospect. If he was the capt and played over 400 games...i'm tipping he can pass a ball as well as anyone in our squad.

I think the signing opens up other options. Is Arnie still wedded to his 4-4-2 narrow diamond? Could be interesting having a 4-3-3 with

---------Rogic---------

or

--Montgomery--------Olly

---------Wee-Mac-----

Sounds like a Matt Simon tribute doesn't it? But then I felt Matty's skill really did go up a few notches under Arnie, or maybe it was his decision making that improved. Either way he has all the key ingredients to be a Mariner and played most of his career 'near the top' as someone put it so I don't think skill should be too much in question. All signs point to a great addition and our strongest squad with greatest depth yet

I'd bet my house he's a better distributor than Mile was. Rostyn could be excellent. But did run out of puff sometimes.

As to Travis, Huke, Doig (who was decent for us when fit) NM is clearly of another class. Very impressive CV in his role
with a vast amount of experience at a high level. Nothing to be unhappy about here. Be very surprised if he disappoints.

Also a high workrate in the midfield is ALWAYS a big plus. Also seen the guy? Look like a powerhouse.

From the link that Adz posted one of the most interesting for me was this

The Aussies like to think they're tough in sports. Let's see how many flinch at the prospect of a 50/50 with Monty.

With the A-League moving towards a passing style of play and the hard men in midfield seeming to dissapear in favour of the ball playing midfielder, I think Monty will be a great point of difference for us. It will make the most difficult team to break down that much harder to score against.

I must say that I'm excited.

We now have 2 CB's over 190cm and a beast in front of them. If Del Piero does sign for Sydney we may just have the guy to knock him into retirement. :innocent:

I'd have to agree with you there FP. He will most definitley get more time on the ball here than the Championship as most A-League games are considerably slower due to the heat. I think we will be surprised as long as he can transition to playing in summer.

FP

I just googled him.

Looks like a hard nut!

He should be a brilliant shield for our centre backs.

How about this,

Bojic--------Anderson------Zwanny---------Rose

---------------------------Monty------------------------

McGlinchey-------Rojic--Caceras--------Bozanic

-------------Sterjovski / Ibini / Duke-----------------

Endless possibilities with that line up, but i think we will stick to the 442 narrow diamond.

Wombat, SM, I know he's a beast! LOVE it! No one in the league comes close to this guys physique.

I want to see him eat Broiche, and shit out little pieces of Berisha and Flores.

. oh please, please, pretty please ... geez that guy gives me the shits - and he is a good enough player to not have to carry on like a dick all the time. he just can't help himself

. unfortunately it will also mean another ten years or so of us being incorrectly labelled a rough, nasty little team ... which leads to too many calls going against us on the pitch because of our 'reputation'
