timmy v said on the jets forum that we arent allowed to bring banners and megas into tonights game

i rang the club to find out if this is true or not and it is

theyre a bunch of nazis

makes sense - FFA running matchday

"can you hear the drums Fernandez?"

I agree with the sentiment, but my understanding is that the AFC are formally running these games.  It may alternatively be the stadium who have set this down.

for a supposed AFC event there were plenty of FFA staff in charge last wednesday night
Notice the badging? Either the AFC needs to use the natives, or there was a lot of moonlighting going on.  ;D

yeah, saw the badging - adam mark was walking a bit straighter than normal in his AFC jacket

what i am getting at is that if the FFA staff are in charge they are likely to enforce their draconian anti-supporter bias in place where no other rules exist
The match commissioners and those in charge of logistics, etc. are AFC officials - hence the AFC would have been in this end - media relations has been done by FFA officials representing the AFC.

Crowd of 7314 according to the HAL site report.

If we were worried about our crowds, I wonder what the mango men are thinking? Can't be to pleased with that.

Warm night, no rain, only 444* more people. Looked like more on TV because the entire western side is off-limits owing to work on the new western stand.

EDIT - It's worth mentioning that their support smashed ours from the bit I saw, so some of those who like to whinge about our efforts might want to do something next time rather than stand around either doing nothing or singing to their shoes.

*2/3 of the beast? ;D

not a bad crowd considering the circumstances - wooden spoon, night game, SFA promotion/marketing

hopefully we get something like 10k v nagoya who should bring some good numbers

7,314 after the season just gone isnt too bad IMHO. Low profile comp, zero profile opposition with the "floating" supporter.

ACL games are likely to attract the core support only.

Compared to other continental club comps, namely the Champions' League, Libertadores, even African Champions' League, the Asian equivalent hasn't quite caught on yet it would seem (apart from Japanese fans travelling in significant numbers). At least from what I can observe. But those competitions, even the African one, do have considerably greater tradition tbh.

In that case, our 6870 last week on the back of an 8-match losing streak and in the rain stands out as spectacular. But I think we should be pulling at least in the vicinity of our league matches.

I would have hoped more of the Coast would get out and frankly I'm expecting (rather than just hoping) that they will when the weather isn't bloody awful. If we can put in a good performance with a win or at least a fighting draw, we might hit 5 figures against Kawasaki.

What sort of support?  They had 444 more than us.

If you mean the squadron vs the bay then probably yes from what I saw briefly on TV, but it also depends whether that really matters. If it does to you ... then as Dibo says, do something about it, don't whine.

Jets Powerless To Keep Covic
Aidan Ormond
Mar 18 2009 00:00

EXCLUSIVE: Newcastle Jets say there wasnt much they could do when a Swedish club believed to be IF Elfsborg bought out the remainder of keeper Ante Covics contract to snap up the talented shot-stopper.

Jets CEO John Tsatsimas told au.fourfourtwo.com after last night's encouraging 2-0 Asian Champions League group victory over Ulsan Hyundai that negotiations had moved swiftly in recent days.

"We'd been in negotiations with Ante for some time but couldn't come to an agreement. And the regulations being such that any player over 28 who has six months left on their contract can have that bought out by a club," he said.

Covic signed for the Jets in 2007 from Swedish club Hammarby. His form was so good after his return that he continued to keep his spot in the national team as a back up to Mark Schwarzer, although he has been out of favour with Pim Verbeek in recent months.

The keeper's current contract with the Jets expires on June 30 and there seems little doubt that the move is in part a reaction to being left out of the national team.

Covic , who is set to return to Sweden next week, puts the Jets in a quandary given their most difficult ACL assignment, in Japan against J-League power Nagoya Grampus, is coming up on April 8 with the return leg in the Hunter on April 22.

"Yes we had concerns [about Covic  leaving before these games] but there was not much we can do," added Tsatsimas.

Ben Kennedy would appear to be the replacement for Covic with youth league Ben McNamara moving into second spot on the Jets' keeping ranks.

Tsatsimas was also frustrated at the organisers for not allowing last night's game to kick off at a more supporter friendly time after a paltry 7314 fans turned up at Energy Australia stadium.

"We think 8pm is a bit late given it's a school night. 7pm would've been our preferred time. We think 8pm is just a bit late for a midweek game," he said.

"But I guess you have to look at the bigger picture which is getting into the knockout round of the ACL."

With the Jets clearly struggling for fitness late in last night's game, the CEO ruled out any additional friendlies in Asia along the lines of the Mariners' recent tour of China.

However, the Jets would've been ecstatic with the form of new signings Sasho Petrovski and Ljubo Milicevic - the latter showing the sort of form that could lead to a return to the national team after a dominating display in the centre of defence.

Ante Covic tells Jets to fix 'off-field problems'
BY SEBASTIAN HASSETT
19/03/2009

JETS goalkeeper Ante Covic has vented his frustration at the "distractions" that derailed the club's A-League championship defence last season as he prepares to return to Sweden.

Covic could be in goal for his new club, Elfsborg, in a trial match on Saturday after signing a three-year deal.

But he leaves Newcastle disenchanted by a series of problems which, he said, prevented the players from reaching their optimum ability.

"Off the field, I don't think the team, the players and coaching staff are given what's needed to go out and perform at the high level without any other concerns," Covic said. "That's one of the major reasons I'm going back to Sweden.

"Once I get over there I know the club will do anything they can to help players perform and win games. I think that's where things are lacking here and shortcuts are taken.

"There is real problems with what's happening off the field.

"There's too many frustrations and distractions that end up getting carried onto the field.

"With Newcastle, we had a good football team, but we need to have a good football club."

He admitted he did not have the best of seasons but felt the club could not move forward until they resolved their off-field issues.

"I'm not trying to make excuses for a poor season . . . I'm a big critic of myself, and I know I didn't get the best from myself this year," he said. "I probably shouldn't have let some things affect me, and I don't want to sound bitter, but there's a lot of small issues that could be very easily overcome.

"From the great squad we had two years ago, 10 or 12 of our best players have left, and you probably wouldn't find one player happy with how things have happened.

"If we ever want to regularly compete with the best teams in Japan or Korea or even reach the level of some of the lower European countries, things have to improve."
