As first revealed on TWG, Newcastle Jets striker Edmundo Zura has left the A-League club after struggling to settle in Australia.

The Ecuador international failed to score in nine A-League appearances, with the club saying the 25-year-old 'requested a mutual termination of his one-year loan deal, citing personal reasons'.

"It's sad that we must say goodbye to Edmundo. He has obviously found a place in the hearts of our supporters and so it is unfortunate to see him go," Jets CEO John Tsatsimas said.

"However, we can understand that he misses his homeland, his family, and the way of life that he is comfortable with. It's not easy to travel to another country and settle immediately, particularly when there is such a large language barrier there. So we would not stand in his way in returning to Ecuador, which is where he wants to be.

"We certainly wish Edmundo all the best for the future and hope that he continues his career in a positive way so that he can enjoy his football."

Zura boarded a flight to Ecuador on Monday morning.

another flop marquee for the jets lol wonder who will be there next marquee will b? im sure kosmina could throw the boots back on as long as he sends them a dvd of his one game for arsenal lol

Just imagine what it must he been like for Zura. Enticed to Australia to play for the champion football team, he arrives in Newcastle ... poor bastard. No need to say anymore. No wonder he got home sick and fled back to Ecuador. I'd sooner live in any South American country than Newcastle.

Yeh, Zura probably thought he had them totally fooled selling his skills using a U-tube video - until he arrived in Newcastle and realised it was him that had been totally swindled.

FIFA fcuked him with their 'kryptonite' ruling. His super hero feats of football will never be seen again without that mask.

.............and another piece of scum leaves the sinking ship. North announced as going to NQ as marquee FFS

http://www.news.com.au/dailytelegraph/story/0,22049,24595496-5001023,00.html

NEWCASTLE Jets have been rocked by the sudden departure of marquee striker Edmundo Zura and captain Jade North's announcement he will leave the defending A-League champions and join North Queensland.

Zura yesterday boarded a flight back to Ecuador to be reunited with the wife and son he has so badly missed, while Socceroos defender North said he had agreed to a three-year deal to become the marquee player for one of the A-League's two new franchises next year.

The Jets, who will play in the Asian Champions League next year, immediately stepped up their search for a replacement for Zura.

Jets CEO John Tsatsimas said the club was a little shocked by Zura's decision to return to his native country so soon but not surprised that North had accepted North Queensland's financial terms to be their marquee player.

"We just couldn't compete with what they were offering. Life goes on - players come and go," Tsatsimas said.

North said one of his main reasons for linking with North Queensland was that he wanted to help indigenous youth in the region.

"I loved every minute playing with Newcastle but I have always wanted to give something back to my community," he said.

The Jets skipper, who was hoping at one stage to play abroad, will still be available to play for Newcastle in the first round of next year's ACL.

"He's assured us that he will give 100 per cent to Newcastle while he's still at the club," Tsatsimas said.

He said the club had worked really hard to secure visas for Zura's family.

"It wasn't easy dealing with Ecuador. We finally get them and he decides to leave," Tsatsimas said.

"Communication was hard for him and he has been unsettled for some time. He wanted to go home. He'd arranged his own flights. We've had no luck with South American players."

Former Brazilian star Mario Jardel was the club's marquee player last season and was a total flop. Zura failed to score a goal in the A-League but showed he was a more creative player.

Football director Remo Nogarotto, in Italy, and new football performance manager Ian Crook are driving the search for a replacement.

Wow, I didn't know that fourfourtwo sensor the comments on their site

I just read the article below and posted a comment to the affect that Alagich is delusional and, as you can see if you follow this link http://au.fourfourtwo.com/news/88242,jets-can-be-an-acl-smash.aspx , my comment has mysteriously disappeared! I said nothing more than commenting on the loss of Zura and North and calling Alagich delusional.  ??? I've seen way worse comments than that.

Whats more, I don't even have the option to comment on the article any more so I must have been hit with the ban stick ::)

'Jets Can Be An ACL Smash'

Aidan Ormond
Nov 4 2008 12:50

EXCLUSIVE: Speaking on the eve of United's Asian Champions League final first leg in Japan against Gamba Osaka, Alagich told au.fourfourtwo.com that he sees a rosy future for ball-playing, technical A-League sides in Asia's biggest tournament.

"They're [the Jets] one of the best ball playing teams in the country," said Alagich.

"They way they're able to retain possession for long periods will suit them in Asia greatly. And they do have pace as well when they do go forward which can hurt teams."

Newcastle and Central Coast Mariners will be Australia's representatives in the 2009 competition. The Jets will go into ACL 2009 with the crucial Asian experience of South Korean wizard Song Jin-hyung, former J-league 2 player Joel Griffiths and ex Olyroo skipper Mark Milligan, who traversed Asia for two years to help Australia qualify for the Beijing Olympics.

Alagich added: "Another critical factor is how they adapt to the travel but absolutely I think they can do well in Asia.

"They're probably in a slightly better position than Central Coast. Having said that, who'd back against them?

"You can't put a price on the Mariners' fighting spirit."

Like Adelaide, who struggled domestically in the lead up to ACL 2008, the Jets are also failing to light up the A-League. The ACL could also see them redeem their year just as the Reds have done so spectacularly.

But as Alagich emphasises, differing approaches require variations in game plans and styles.

"The A-League is a very, very tough league to play in," added Alagich, who retired from the Reds after the ACL group stage draw in China against Changchun Yatai.

"The A-League is pretty much one-paced. Teams just attack whereas in Asia teams are quite happy to let you have the ball for ten or 15 minutes and they'll just sit back.

"And ACL teams tend to attack in waves for ten or 15 minutes or just sit back and soak up some more pressure then hit you again.

"Our lesson in the first year of ACL was invaluable in realising that you retain possession. In the A-League, it's about get forward, get forward.

"And with some of the players we've got, the likes of Cassio, Diego, Cristiano in particular, they like to play the ball around. Little one-twos, and I think that's what happened this year in the Champions League."

Bruce Djite, the former Reds, told au.fourfourtwo.com that United is more of an ACL side, "preferring it to the rough and tumble of the A-League."

Alagich agrees, adding: "Look what happened against Kashima [in the ACL quarter-finals].

"Adelaide sat back and soaked up some pressure. That's what needed to be done and that might not be pretty to watch but that's the way you win games because [in Asia] you play against some real quality opposition.

"And if you go out and expose yourself, they'll punish you. That's what happened in the first year.

"We slowed it down a little but basically we played like we did in the A-League and we got hit time and time again."

A worrying aspect about Zura's departure is that word will get around.

Depending upon Zura's standing in his home country's footballing fraternity, if there's been a bit of shonky or sloppy business dealings by the Scum towards Zura, it may impact upon the rest of the A-League in the eyes of those who end up believing that Zura was hard done by.

Add Jardel's situation last year, where there was squabbling between GVE and Con about whether to play him or not, and that's another piece of anecdotal evidence that some footballers in the South American region may take notice of.

Now firstly, Newcastle will find themselves on the nose with a few players' agents in that region IF THEY HAVE DONE ANYTHING WRONG to either Zura or Jardel (late payments, slow to process family visas etc...). But secondly and more importantly to me, the other A-League clubs may find it harder dealing these agents.

It is a market that other clubs would probably like to venture into and see what type of player they can attract and it might become a millstone around their necks to keep explaining that Newcastle are, well, Newcastle and certainly not them to prospective players and their agents.

How would we all like it, if the A-League became as suss, in the eyes of many South American players, as many of us view the Romanian League after Thwaite's dramas there?

Keep screwing around the players, or use poor recruiting techniques and throw players to the wolves when they don't perform to the level you thought they had, and word will get around. Just saying....

the scenario you have outlined clarence will actually bring more shonky agents for south american players out of the woodwork

they will try hard to snare a deal for their average players because of how regularly the jets have been hoodwinked in the past

sadly, the decent players will stay away for the reasons you listed
