Nice to see that super coach has done his homework. I cant work out if he is just plain think or deluded (or both)

Milligan got a brace??!!!
Holy shit Arnold, you really know your squads all out of whack when Milligan's scoring twice, your strikers aren't getting on the sheet and your overage star striker doesn't even get off the bench! Not to mention they also got two past us... I like being mister positive.... but I'm just not feeling the love, and rather fancy that I hear the oracles of doom growing ever stronger...

*A whispers sound in the trees...*

"Miilgan...your countries Olympic football medal prospects lie in the hands of Milligan..."

Is there a slash your wrists smiley somewhere?

and What on earth does...
"We played the world today" said coach Graham Arnold.
Mean???

NO ARNOLD, but you are going to play "the world" very soon...
And it's going to be "messi" very farking "messi"

Didn't read the BOTN report but the short of it was:

NZ really gave us a good game. They play some nice football, quite similar to the Olyroos at times.

Spiro was awesome except for getting caught on the ball that led to their second goal. Troisi was great playing in the hole, he is really fast on the ball and fights for the scraps too. Lawrie, junior marquee? Musialik had a pretty good game next to Milligan. Zadko was his usual up and down all over the shop self and playing at right wing...surely Burns would be a better option there. Tando wasn't great. Ruka was ineffectual, Matty was more involved when he came on late.

Basically we won 3-2 because we looked a bit sharper with our set pieces. Sarkies is a better crosser of the ball than shooter - and I don't really know about the Olywhites but our guys have had a pretty bloody good couple of years' preparation with the amount of qualifiers and camps they've had and look sharp and well-drilled with the finer points. I can imagine this will also be a strength of ours at the tournament. For an international team, these guys look and play like a true team, not just a selected squad.

The Matildas were good too but were also dominated in parts. They spent ages signing autographs but then half of them were walking around the hill during the boys game without drawing much attention (or any more than good looking ladies normally do). They are getting bigger but they ain't quite superstars yet!

I think we were in negotiations with him earlier - but he wants to stay overseas... anyone?

Olympics have Simon's head spinning

Friday 18 July, 2008 12:01am

TWO years ago Central Coast Mariners striker Matt Simon chucked in his plastering apprenticeship in a desperate bid to secure a full-time A-League contract.

He trained for weeks with the Mariners without getting paid.

Now the former East Gosford goalpoacher is off to the Beijing Olympics. Simon has been confirmed as one of four reserves in the Australian Olympic team.

Simon played the first half of the Mariners 2-1 trial loss to the New Zealand under-23 team at Wahroonga on Tuesday. He left yesterday with the national squad for a series of pre-Olympic matches in China. "I always felt confident I had the ability to play at a high level but never thought it would happen so quickly," Simon, 22, said.

"This is a once in a lifetime opportunity for me. All I needed was an opportunity.

"The Mariners gave me a chance and now I'm off to the Olympics Everything has happened very quickly."

Simon is one of four travelling reserves with Graham Arnold's Olyroos. He can play in the warm-up matches but can only take part in Olympic matches if another player is injured and ruled out of the Games. Simon was originally disappointed to miss out on the squad of 18 but was delighted to be involved in some capacity.

He was chosen after finishing the Intercontinental Cup tournament in May as the leading scorer with five goals. He netted a hat-trick against Ireland in the semi-final.

From TWG:
http://theworldgame.sbs.com.au/spain/barca-wont-budge-over-messi-123314/

Barcelona sporting director Txiki Begiristain has vowed to fight to prevent Lionel Messi from playing in the Beijing Olympics.

The Argentinian Football Association (AFA) announced their squad at the beginning of July and included the Barca forward.

However, the Games clash with the dates of the Champions League preliminary round which and Barca insist they will do everything in their power to hold onto their star player.

Argentina are in Australia's group along with Serbia and Cote d'Ivoire.

"We are right and we will fight for Messi to play the preliminary round because he has to be with us," said Begiristain.

"We have to play two games of official nature and so we have made that known to FIFA.

"We will continue insisting but we want to come to a solution that is agreed by all the parties."

Barca's chances of preventing Messi from playing in Beijing appear slim. The 21-year-old has said he wants to represent his country, while FIFA clarified in a statement last week that their rules stipulate players under the age of 23 must be released from their clubs for the Olympics.

But Barca president Joan Laporta has slammed the logic behind the rule.

"Barca have Olympic spirit, but also that of the Champions League," he said. "We don't want to get into any argument with AFA president Julio Grondona.

"He has to understand Barca's interests, for which we also want understanding in what we are asking for.

"We hope the solution will be satisfactory."

Argentina's Olympic coach Sergio Batista is insistent the winger will be going to Beijing.

"I am sure," he said. "Because I know they have to give him to us and the player will join our group July 23."

mmmmhm and the sad thing is he is trying to fight FIFA laws designed to help him and his club when they have players called up. And does he think that without Messi they will struggle to beat a team that wont really be anywhere near Barca quality in the CL qualifying round, if so he needs to be shot.

So I'm trying to think of a starting eleven for this abomination of a "squad"....... knowing van der Arnold, he'll play that 4-2-3-1 rubbish.

---------------------Federici----------------------------
Shitkovich-------North--------Spiranovic-------Hyphenator
--------------Milligan--------Musialik---------------------
Sarkies---------------Troisi-------------------Carney-----
---------------------Bridge------------------------------

Probably close, but I don't think that's entirely what Arnie is thinking. At first glance the squad looks loaded with defenders but I think he's added North and Spiranovic to central defence for 2 reasons that I can gather - and garner from the match against NZ, not that I was there - one being that he wants to move Milligan into a holding midfield role which, in this group and considering the considerable step up in class they are about to face I think is a sound idea, and because Leijer appears to be way off the pace at the moment, kinda dropped out of form. So why he picked him might be a decent question, even if he was integral to the defence in the last phase.

McLenehan played at right back and I've heard he was probably among the best on the park, overlapping very well, Topor on the left, sluggish.

He had Sarkies at left mid, Troisi behind Ruka, and Zad on the right. All of whom were supposedly fairly effective.

As Australia started to gain control he punted Musialik and threw in Celeski to offer some drive out of midfield, with Milligan staying back, except for set pieces. He then punted Zad, switched Sarkies to the right in his place, moved Troisi out to the left and put Bridge up front with Ruka...who was later replaced by Simon.

Looks to me like Arnold is trying to produce a squad high on pace, mobility and adaptability, and we may see a few quick counterattacks. Archie may fit in well if he arrives fit and with any form. That's a big if, innit. He also may very well be planning on punting Topor and inserting Carney, who can also be used further forward.

In that regard I suspect the reality is there weren't many other senior Socceroos who could, or wanted to go. I also think there is more to the story regards Djite and Burns.

He's made some big calls here, some big wtf calls, even if I do believe Djite has potential but is a tad more overrated than his performances have thus far deserved (for the Olyroos even, he has scored 1 goal in 15 appearances), and that Burns is a very inconsistant player who has in reality shown relatively little since his 'big arrival', but he still has enough of the x factor when is IS in the mood to warrant a selection into this squad...which is what leads me to believe there may be more to it than we are being told. It's a bit too easy imo to just refer to Arnold as utterly numpty, even if he is. Which lets face it, he is a bit.

The squad looks to lack a bit of inventive guile in attack but if anything that leaves Verbeek's fingerprints all over it for mine and I don't think it is that far removed from the Socceroos atm.

In any case, the word I got from several people who were at that game is that they looked quite good, probably at about 75% fitness. Good luck getting out of that group though, I'll be looking at the swimmers for medals I think.

EXCLUSIVE: Channel Seven has released details of its Olyroo coverage at the Beijing Olympics - and it's likely to frustrate football fans.

The free-to-air network won't show live coverage of the first Olyroo group game against Serbia on Thursday August 7.

Instead, the match will be on a two-hour delay so as not to interrupt the network's regular coverage, a spokesperson told au.fourfourtwo.com today.

This despite the game being played the day before the Games' opening ceremony.

Seven also confirmed that the Olyroo v Serbia game will be interrupted "at some point" to cross to the AOC team reception for the flag bearer announcement.

The network hoped this would be during half-time but could not guarantee the time or duration of the cross.

Given this announcement isn't actually a sport, this won't go down well with viewing fans, particularly if the match is at a crucial point.

What's more, according to the network's coverage details, the crunch match for the Olyroos against Argentina on Sunday August 10 will begin at 7pm, however, by 8.30pm - that is with around 15 minutes to go of the crunch match - the coverage is set to switch to swimming.

For the Olyroos' final group match against Ivory Coast on Wednesday August 13, the game's coverage will be shared with women's basketball.

The spokesperson added: "The nature of any Olympics is such that no way is it possible to be able to show uninterrupted coverage of all events."

Seven's football commentator for the Olympics will be Gordon Bray, known as the voice of Rugby Union for the network.

And the network stressed in its coverage details that "Seven will be integrating key AFL coverage within the Olympic broadcasts."
