We miss way too many to score six in a game, pretty sure 3 goals is best haul so far and I would hate to know how many sitters we have hit straight at the keeper or the shot was so limp the keeper nearly fell asleep waiting for it. Not to mention two missed Pens in one game.

Why wouldn't the Roar just hit the repeat button and smash us again, I don't think we can change our game plan so I fully expect a big "L" next game. As we tried against the Victory we do not have the players to break down a set defence. Simon didn't know that to do when DDS found in with a perfect pass. We needed to smash Victory to repair our goal difference which is now a concerning factor moving into the fight for the finals.

Pedantry warning.
The fullbacks you are talking about (Rowles and Tongyic) are traditionally referred to as centre halves and in more modern times as centre backs.
Our fullbacks, Clisby and Nigro play more like wingbacks. I am not to sure where one ends, fullbacks,and the other begins, wingbacks, probably when you play 5 at the back like WSW.

I completely agree. I was just saying that going forward I'd take all out attack over stale bore draws and effortless losses.

A commitment to attack would have been a commitment to an expansive game and it would have guaranteed us another loss.

A commitment to some rotations since we've been sluggish would have saved us some grief.

Instead we conserved energy too soon and almost got our pockets picked a few times while failing to press our advantage then not ending up saving much energy since we had to try to get back in front.

Later in the game we could have used Smylie and Hatch's speed to push them back playing long balls. Bouman, Casella and Miller all viable subs to replace fading mids & defenders respectively. A one goal lead just isn't enough to rest upon especially if your opponent isn't someone you need to keep points from - i.e. Drawing with Sydney or City compared to drawing with Victory .

Honestly the subs again were too late, especially with the lethargy of play. I'm certain Simon only came off because he had a knock.

Obviously not calling for Staj to be sacked. I love him.
But FFS Staj change things up! Change the formation inject something! Get more than just the strikers in goal scoring areas! WE ARE SO STALE RIGHT NOW. Incredible danger of missing finals all together.

Win or lose at the start of the season I really didn't care because I could see the fire was back. We looked so hungry and competed so hard, made me proud to be a Mariner again. But that was just too slow and insipid for me. They should be collapsing at the end of that game. Everything to play for. But at full time you can see they've played within them selves and are simply not leaving it all on the pitch.

A positive from the game I think alot of people have missed, we are on 32 points, Newcastle are on 13, 19 off with 6 games to go, its official we will not be spooning it.

On reflection, I suspect my previous post meant somewhat in jest about flying to high and getting scared may be closer to the truth than I initially thought.
At the start of the year it appeared that the team was playing youthful, attacking, joyful football with no respect for opposition reputations.
When, halfway through the season and being on top of the table, things have become more serious and they are playing more to protect the position on the table instead of just trying to attack the opposition and have fun.
Against Victory they appeared to me as being confident about being better than the cellar dwellers along with a certain worry about losing, instead of just trying to rip Victory a new one.
They are no longer performing above their perceived abilities and are hence producing timid performances.
They may need a psych or a few losses to get the monkey off their backs and rediscover some enthusiasm and bugger the consequences.

We can’t know for certain what’s true, but that’s how it looks. Which is why Staj’s pressers have worried.

He’s focused on “the performances” and how he feels we should have been winning. But how we’re playing mentally and emotionally has clearly changed and not for the better.

I don’t doubt he can fix it. I’m just worried because he doesn’t seem to think there’s a problem even though our results -one in nine - and our intensity and tempo suggest otherwise .

This is why you have older guys who’ve won stuff and played at better clubs and higher levels. It’s up to them to bring through the guys who’ve less than 20 games. But it’s also on the coach to recognise when guys are in their own heads and recognise when it’s not working properly.
