He did shit all apart from taking out Heff and scoring the penalty to win the match.

The Performance

We absolutely carved in the first 20. With that team out on the park, particularly that midfield, we will always be unstoppable.

It was great that after Danny went, we continued to play the more attractive football, playing some passing moves on the floor that were breathtaking even for the first-timers in the stands.

That much had to go wrong for us for Sydney to win 5-4 in the last second. That goes to show a lot about the threat we pose to this league.

And the effort from the players - unbelievable. We never looked a man down despite being down to 10, then 9 for a while (scoring in this time), and eventually 8. We are proud of you.

If we could have gone on with 11 men we would have won by many goals.

The Reds

On the old forum there was a great thread were the consensus was that Danny's outside the box antics would eventually go wrong, but that we would forgive him because they have saved us many times. That's happened now. We could have hoped that it wouldn't cost us too bad when it happened, but unfortunately it cost us what was looking like a very juicy three points.

There is a case about the ball skidding, the direction it was headed, etc, but fact is if Necevski had done what Danny did down the other end and only got a yellow, the conspiracy patrol would be on that case too. If a keeper comes outside the box and handles, it's a red, as a rule of thumb.

I didn't see Kwassie's live but when someone said what happened, I wouldn't have been surprised if he'd caught the ball and thrown it away such is the guy's love and sacrifice for the Mariners. As it turned out on the replay it wasn't too obvious but looked intentional, only he will know? It gave us another chance and Trotty went close (the same way that Talay always goes).

The Goals

Viddie was good all-round but it was his marking on corners that let them damage us in that way a number of times. We looked susceptible every time. We missed Boogs in that department, maybe Viddie to left back now?

Jedi's: Screamer.
Kwas': Cool.
Owens': Great penalty.
Aloisi: The key was the anticipation. All class.
Biddle: Skinned Heff, and where Danny might have been running out booting it into the top tier of the Western Stand, Trott hesitated.
Santalab: A memorable bit of skill but our lack of numbers left him open.
Fyfe and McFlynn: Poor defending from corners.
Talay: Very calm despite the incident just before.

The Crowd

Brilliant! I think there will be more next week which is a nice prospect. Our boys (or what's left of them) will be gagging to go for it to erase this result. Anyone on the pitch at the end - dickhead (except Lyall). Maybe a lack of professional sport on the Coast was part of the reason this happened - the dire consequences are well publicised at every other ground.

The Ref

Watching the replay carefully, the actual decisions weren't too bad but the way the yellow cards were dished and not dished was questionable. Robertson fouled so many times in the first half, sometimes preventing a good chance, but didn't get carded til he lunged two-footed into the back of Greggo's leg. That should have been his second yellow at least. You could see Aloisi saying "HOW many TIMES?" repeatedly to Breeze.

Brosque's complaining at one point in the first half went past the 'acceptable' level...and then continued. Middleby into Hutcho's back when we were breaking was another one, given the big 'keep the cards away' tactic didn't seem to apply to our players much.

Some players

I was saying early in the second half, we need Matt Simon on. His style of play is to play the role of two strikers, and he can go up against two or three defenders and get a result in the form of a throw, a foul, and apparently a penalty! His finished product is short of the other two strikers as we know but this game was made for him, a very valuable members of the squad.

With Hutcho driving that midfield, the spirit of the team is just so strong. The quality of Tommy and Jedi grows and the balance of Greggo is perfect. Clarky is another one who battled on with that helmet. I think having him on the pitch, particularly at home, helps lift everyone.

But they all deserve so much credit. Tough to lose the game but I think this will make the players want it more. Please let injuries be not too bad and we'll be back!

The occasion

Indeed, it was the best A-League game ever. For a neutral, it had absolutely everything. People talk about rule changes to make more goals but it's the rarity of such a scoreline that gives it value.

I feel the story out of the game was the spirit of the Coast rather than the miracle win of FC who were good but  didn't deserve to win.

But the sunset over Brisbane Water around the 60th minute, the crowd, the atmosphere, the goals, the pride, the top of the table, it was all just so good. That will be my memory from the game, rather than the bitterness at the end.

can't add to that brett - agree entirely.

sunset in the 60th minute was drop dead gorgeous! i'm a late convert to the keeping of the palm trees - there is surely not a football ground in the world that has a view like that.

Might be unfair if that bloke was generally behaving but you get deja vu of away games to scum looking at that. One security person up there is enough to save a lot of angst.

24 hours later and one of the best things about last night's game was the passion shown by Mariners supporters, both at the ground and on this forum. I feel more passionate about this team now than I ever have before. I'm looking forward to the game on 31 December and hopefully another big crowd, this time being given a win to celebrate.

Great pics on 442. absolutly brilliant.

Brett wonderful post.

I agree cruiser. I think it was the most passionate display by both sides, fans and forum lovers. A sign that we are all fully behind the coast and that even the new posters/bay memebrs who may indeed be new to the mariners are just as passionate as the "older" heads.

We may hate the result but i think in the next couple of days everyone will realise what a spectacle the game was and it's exactly what the a-league needs every now and then to forget about the 0-0 perth vs tards game.

I think the history books will show that this will/was the game that was/will be the catalyst in deciding the fate of the Central Coast Mariners season for 07/08.

Whether we win the Prem, or praise the almighty, and win the Prem & 'Precious' (fr/ 'Lord of the Rings', as I like to call it, dunny seat makes it sound  like..er ..shit) I think it will be this game that we will all look back on as being the impetus in driving forward to either of these 2 results.

Likewise a draw, or Omni forbid, a loss to Sydney, we'll still look back and say that was the game that cost us points and let this team or that team move into this position or that position on the table in the remaining rounds of the comp. The words of "If only..against Syd" are ones I and I'm sure a lot of us don't want to be uttering come semi-final time.

I am extremely optimistic for us to win this game, why shouldn't we be. Confidence and believing in oneself comes naturally when your winning. Form is foremost in any sport and ours has been superb. However, as the pundits say "a fighter is only as good as his last fight",  a loss or a draw from this game could be all it takes for a little doubt to creep in and bring the dream undone. I've noticed sometimes when we go 1-0 down in first halves that we tend to drop the head a little and then take sometime to get back into the game and manage a win.

The V1 GF was a good example, yes the boy's still tried to win that game despite being down a goal, but you got the sense that they didn't believe they could win it. I hope we score an early goal against Sydney, which we do  in a lot of our games, and 'ride the wave' all the way from this game to the Double.  :pirashoot:  :pirate:

Not up myself to say 'told you so', just FCUK!  :'(  :'(  :'(  :'(  :'(  :'(  :'(  :'(  :'(  :'(  :'(

Still can't decide whether (GF V1 all over again) to watch the game I recorded on the IQ for fear it will shit me for xmas.  :'(   :'(

Just when we all thought we had heard as much bias shit as we can handle... it gets worse. Some guy said this on the Big Day Out forum.... wait for it....

'Santalab's goal was definitely one of the best of the season'

Guess he didnt see owens v perth, elrich v mariners, hutch v sydney x2 and griffiths v merlbourne.

It was a good goal but I think he might find it a long wait before he does it again.

Very average footballer IMHO

Breeze is a total disgrace, and should be investigated, but then again his a** would be covered by  the same people who gave him that huge Christmas bonus for getting Sydney in last night, that dweeb Kosmina deserves no credit for their win, as it was all a well planned conspiracy theory, anyone paying attention to the Sydney side could see something corrupt was going on, and they were out to win by dirty means, which they did, so if they are proud of winning dirty then so be it, as our boys win by fair and hard play, and why they're on the top. Isn't it funny how Sydney were calling us every name under the sun, and laughing at our injured players, yet if we even stooped to do the same we would cop the biggest blasting, Sydney are all one sided, just like that twat Breeze, and that other twat Kosmina, not to say the least Mr Lapaglia, and Mr Lowy, as whatever Frankie wants Frankie gets as money talks and bullshit walks, as always. I was shattered last night, and still am, as when our boys hurt, so do I, it's not a fact of being a sore loser here, it's a fact of playing fair, and last night was as corrupt as hell, and Sydney had a hit list vendetta to keep and did, and the ONLY way they could win. And to those Sydney fans who called us hicks and said we live in s***, I lived in Sydney for the first 30 years of my life, and am so glad I left there 11 years ago, as I can see your mentality will never change and that you're still as spiteful and disgraceful as ever, have some respect when visiting other's domain, and of all times at Christmas, some example you are of goodwill and peace, what a damn joke. If the FFA want Soccer to succeed here, they need to pull their fingers out and look into the ref's ruining the magic of the game, and I for one would have had a go at Breeze, if I could last night, ladylike or not, as he was unfair, arrogant, and corrupted by the $$$$ signs in his eyes, and hip pocket.

I agree.

It's funny how Sydney seem to singing his praises, when they've bagged the f*ck out of him all year.

. that game has seriously screwed me up, i have stayed away from the forum for two days to try and get some perspective - and it hasn't worked! i still get all teary reading these posts and i haven't been able to sleep for two days

. many things have been discussed and i will try not to carry on about obviously poor refereeing and all the ifs and buts, however there are a few things i need to get off my chest

. thank god work in sydney is shut down until after we play another game as one smart arse comment at the moment could send me over the edge

. sydney did not deserve to win - simple

. we deserved better - obvious

. this has effected me more than v1 gf

. surely this rivalry means more than all that crap that goes on with newcastle

. i honestly only swore once - when sydney's penalty was awarded

. i will proudly wear my tin foil hat next time we play sydney

. i am sure i have done some irreparable damage to my throat

. there was so much pride and passion both on and off the pitch for the mariners it must hold us in great stead for a very tense final few rounds - the crowd (all of it) was going off, residing in bay 49 it is often difficult to even hear the marinators but for most of that match the noise around the ground was incredible

. great game of football i am not sure, but a spectacle definitely

. by the time sydney (and breeze) finally got the better of us we were 95 minutes into the game and reduced to 8 (YES EIGHT!) men - with sydney and the media saying it was a miracle win really does show how much trouble they are in. they did not play that badly (dirty yes), but to need a miracle (and a penalty) to finish off a team with 8 men in injury time truly speaks volumes of the two sides

. oh yeah and great post brett, brilliant stuff as usual

. separately i needs to ask your opinions on some things:

- what do you guys make of kwasi running the ball back to halfway after his goal (i don't want to incite any of the usual kwasi related rubbish) but your views on right or wrong under the circumstances? and yes i know he wanted another one

- do you think the passion shown by the players and the crowd will encourage some of the boys to re-sign, in particular the 'maybes' such as aloisi and tommy?
