ccmfans.net is the Central Coast Mariners fan community, and was formed in 2004, so basically the beginning of time for the Mariners. Things have changed a lot over the years, but one thing has remained constant and that is our love of the Mariners. People come and go, some like to post a lot and others just like to read. It's up to you how you participate in the community!

If you want to get rid of this message, simply click on Join Now or head over to https://www.ccmfans.net/community/register/ to join the community! It only takes a few minutes, and joining will let you post your thoughts and opinions on all things Mariners, Football, and whatever else pops into your mind. If posting is not your thing, you can interact in other ways, including voting on polls, and unlock options only available to community members.

ccmfans.net is not only for Mariners fans either. Most of us are bonded by our support for the Mariners, but if you are a fan of another club (except the Scum, come on, we need some standards), feel free to join and get into some banter.

At the end of the day there are very few 'investors' in football. Just benefactors.

I might be looking at this the wrong way but I don't see why it needs to be like this.

I think that in general you can't expect a football club to make money purely on its football operations, and that's what you probably mean, and what we generally talk about. So then why not expand the business to other opportunities?

Look at the other codes in Australia, they have interests in licenced venues so thats money coming in from pokies etc. Our stance on gambling probably contradicts this approach but there must be more revenue streams to consider.

At the end of the day nobody should expect to make any money or even break even by setting some unrealistic KPI on bums on seats at the games or hat sales alone.

So you would think other opportunities would be considered?

Like the original COE concept before it was turned into a private property deal?

The point is you need a benefactor to start with to put the money into developing other income streams.

I wonder wtf happened there because I would have thought commercial real estate is pretty solid to get into in the long-term to keep a steady stream of money coming in, but then they bailed on that plan?

Its not that easy these days to get a pokies licence. And I imagine the existing clubs would try to block more coming into the coast. Maybe if someone took over an existing club/licence and then moved it somewhere.

Location would also be an issue. people probably aren't going to drive past existing venues to get to the mariners club unless there is a massive drawcard. Pokies alone isn't going to do it.

Most alternate revenue streams are completely unrelated to the football operations and I'm not sure they would be up to covering the losses of the football side (or at best looking at a long time to become that profitably stable.

You mean free land and a $10m grant?
Like that. But tbh that is chicken feed. You need someone seriously rich to set up a stream that can be used over a number of years to develop both the infrastructure and the squad. Over time as the club streams develop the club can be weaned off the benefactors income stream. In that way they can be self-sustaining in the long term after the benefactor moves on.

That was supposed to be a revenue stream for the club but it got hijacked and now the club get nothing.
Adz is right, we would have had "an" alternative income stream but you know.

Rich was talking property for the youth etc to live in but not sure if ever got off the ground.

Pokies are fine for a club with a no gambling agreement.

You take money from the other entity. It just so happens they got there money from pokies but no one cares

E.g. Parramatta league club gives Parramatta Eels $10-$15m a year. So you are getting paid by a licensed club. Where they get it from no one asks

There used to be a club on the exact spot of the Mariners called Club Tuggerah. We visited from Sydney with Coastie fam before we were smart enough to actaully move here.

It was the old tennis club I think. When I first started working at Tuggerah it did a pretty decent lunch special at the Chinese restaurant.

Not sure if the club bought the licence or if that belonged to one of the other big clubs - mingara or Wyong leagues - and they just took all the pokies.

The jets tried a similar thing buying Adamstown rosebuds club to try and shift the pokies but it didn't work.

The point is, it's not just a matter of deciding one day to build a licensed club. The NRL ones have been around for decades and the NPL clubs that have them were the social club for the migrant communities - Marconi, king tom, etc

Turnbull had the money and grand plans for the complex but the global financial crisis f**ked him over royally. He had all his eggs in a big property development on the Gold Coast but it went tits out. That was the beginning of the end for his contributions for the Mariners. It might have been a different story if that deal landed. It would have made him tens of millions.
