Newcastle Jets striker Roy O’Donovan will attempt to have his huge ban from last year’s red card in the Hyundai A-League Grand Final reduced when an appeal hearing is held next Tuesday, July 10.

O’Donovan was slapped with a 10-match ban after he was sent off in the dying minutes of the decider – which the Jets lost 1-0 - for his high kick to the face of Melbourne Victory goalkeeper Lawrence Thomas.

It was the Irishman’s second red card of the campaign following his dismissal in the Round 22 win over Sydney FC for an incident with Jordy Buijs.

The 10-game suspension takes in both Hyundai A-League and FFA Cup matches.

A statement released by the FFA on Monday said: "The independent Appeal Committee hearing relates to an appeal by O’Donovan from the determination of the independent Disciplinary and Ethics Committee regarding an incident involving O’Donovan which occurred in or around the 93rd minute of the Hyundai A-League 2018 Grand Final between Newcastle Jets and Melbourne Victory on Saturday, 5 May 2018.

The Disciplinary and Ethics Committee on 18 May 2018 determined that O’Donovan must serve a suspension of ten (10) Hyundai A-League matches and/or FFA Cup matches (whichever comes first), which includes the Mandatory Match Suspension.”

The hearing will take place at FFA headquarters, commencing at 5.30pm (AEST).

I think he may be - but not by much. Muscat, also a multiple offender, only got 8 weeks for the Zahra tackle.
Muscat was never going to get the ball and was lucky he wasn't charged with violent play. At least Roy's kick, when he made it, was on target for the ball. not the player.

Many keepers would have tried to punch that or not come at all. Thomas, to his credit, came for the ball, caught it and moved forward with it. that action meant his head was where Roy has judged the ball would be. A completely reckless tackle with no thought to the other player, but to my mind given the state of the game and the importance of the game it was much more understandable. Muscat's tackle was basically a very late career-ending tackle that could be argued was not even in the realm of 'playing for the ball'.

10 years is a long time. I would hope muscat would get more than 8 nowadays. As for a tackle to the head in the current concussion climate. No chance of reduction imo. The head is sacrosanct. No ifs or buts. In hindsight I think 10 is unders.

Having been brought up when keepers were fair game for strikers I took kicks to the head as par for the course. Maybe that explains something about me

In many ways keepers are too protected but in this case there is no excuse. It happened to me when I played isn't a good reasoning.
We now know the implications of even the most innocuous head knocks now. It's just a game noone should have their life put at risk to win.
I qlso dare say if snake had to put his head in rather than his foot he would be the one who got smashed. If he even went there at all.

So it seems that the FFA are trying to bring Peter Crouch to Sydney.
Helping out the clubs that don't need it, again. So dodgy
If they were genuine and looking the equality of the comp that $2mill would be split 4 ways for the bottom non finals teams. But they're aren't interested in an equalised comp

The money is not coming from the FFA. It is coming from Fox especially for this purpose.

There is no opportunity cost.
