A league media deal thread

Woke chardonnay socialists are urged to exercise caution.
Can we do without politicising any time a story is posted? If I want to see right v left crap I'll stick to facebook.

There's clearly an agenda going on with these stories and the amount of airtime they're getting atm from that group. Probably a lot of hard truths in there as well but there's definitely an angle we'll just need to see what it is. I suspect they're beating up the league a bit to position themselves as its savior with a low ball offer while also getting to dig the boot in to 10 & P+. You could see in the last Foxtel rights cycle as the end of term got closer they were far less interested in promoting it and potentially adding to the renewal price. It wasn't just the league getting less popular it was a theme of being left out or minimised in their promotional material while more obscure stuff got a run.

Happy to. Unfortunately some lefties in the past felt the need to dismiss stories posted from The Australian [despite being factually correct] because they only read Fairfax, and watch the ABC. If that ceases I wont need to warn them.

Interesting that even you see a possible conspiracy linking a Foxtel bid link to these stories. There isn't always an agenda you know. Last year I posted a piece from The Australian on Josh Nisbet, his struggles and achievements well before the opposition press saw a story there.
I think it is widely accepted that the Ten deal is crappy [just ask our chairman]. In the absence of similar reports from Aunty and Fairfax we are left [like it or not] with The Australian.

Between Slater's various articles under different banners, Code's recent series, stories about 10/Paramount's woes there has been a lot of airtime given to a very specific part of the game of late. Maybe it's as simple as putting the boot in or filling column space but it seems like there is an angle of some sort. I don't think it's some grand conspiracy but if they are interested in the rights at a cut price should it come up it makes sense they'd try to make the league look unattractive to rivals. Like it or not the power of such a broad media presence can shape a narrative.

Not disputing that (thanks Danny) at all.

An maybe a story is just a story.
Its topical and the other outlets aren't reporting on it.
Feel free to skip any future posts from The Australian [seems like the warning is still needed]

Just a question on Wellington home games. Have any been on Channel 10 FTA? or only on Paramount?
Doubt there would have been any.

Nix being 2/3hrs ahead would make the 7.45 Sat night slot impossible

Also Because they didn’t do great last year and wouldn’t draw a viewership.

We won the championship and haven’t been on much.

I'm not a leftie but neither are the ABC or SMH. The Guardian would be considered leftist.
ex fox ceo now runs the ABC

So are their home games owned by Sky Sports NZ - not part of the Channel Ten deal?

Was just thinking along the same lines. I don’t know the intricacies of the deal quite that well, but I did go back through 10’s FTA games from this season and didn’t see any Phoenix home games in there which makes me wonder if the Sky deal is a factor here. In fact, they only had 2 games on FTA the entire season - R1 against the wanderers in parramatta, and their semi final in Melbourne.
Even still, if so, just come out and say it!!

Don't be surprised if News put a bid in for 10.... they got pipped at the post last time....

News wanted a FTA station to run with its streaming and subscription services and they saw sport as big part of that.

Further, media reports suggest as Amazon, Disney, Paramount and some others now streaming in Australia are waiting for programme distribution to time out, with a lot of content being taken back by the holders... remember also Fox movies and programs are now owned by Disney ...

Again just what I have read, News need to morph into a new service as they will loose many shows and movies they currently have Australian broadcast rights.

BTW those articles coped from the paper I can't find them online does anyone have a link even if behind a paywall.. i.e. both RP article and the Ch 10 / Paramount one.

On the overall issue.... IMO 10 have been woeful in the promotion side of things and there web sites with links to key games on 10 play have been difficult to work with....

Looks like it. Sky exclusively in NZ.

Id say there is no cross over with 10 just paramount hence you can’t get the semi final on 10.

Probably another Danny Dope Deal

This is what I've assumed to be the case. The A-Leagues are just a convenient hammering point, but there'll be more stories run about how crap 10 is generally as well. News Limited still wants 10 and they see it potentially coming back on the market with Paramount likely being bought and then bits sold off - and if they can run down the price in the meantime, bonus.

As I posted earlier some analysis believe News needs a FTA, because of the potential loss of broadcast rights as newer players in the Australian streaming market come on board, they don't even own the rights to Fox programming anymore...aside from Fox News.

The idea, of say Code... FTA, Stream, Subscription, Paper, ... similar to the Nine group but without a radio network... If News controlled 10, they could go after the AFL and could outbid 7... Cricket the same....
