We have a pretty solid base especially atthe back with Rowles and Souttar the preferred partnership for the next cycle

Then Arnie will have to prove his worth again and as you say the standard expected for the Asian Cup will be high after this campaign and we really do need to improve the playing style. If we can add some class to the courage we will be a very good side

Improving technical ability is something that needs to be done before national teams. What Arnie showed is that when his teams are technically superior (earlier in qualifying) they will play a good style. When they are outgunned technically he played a style that gave us a chance. That flexibility is essential in a NT manager that can not determine the level of technical ability that will be available to him.

To improve technical ability we need more and better academies at ALM, NSD and NPL level, ideally the incorporation of futsal participation into the academy training, our younger national teams playing more relevant, regular games against technically superior teams. But most of all we need more young players playing more games at higher levels.

To improve technical ability we actually need less high cost academies, less coaching and more kids 4-12 year playing low cost small sided football in a non-competitive environment where the ball is at their feet as much as possible.

Our current five year olds only have one thirty minute game (mostly with subs) and one one hour training session a week, for half a year. That equates to less than a hour a week of football. That training session has the child without the ball at their feet for ninety percent of the session.

The kids who will excel are the ones who are playing in the streets or on the back yard with their siblings. Constant playing, freestyling, experimenting, solving their own football problems.

If they tick these boxes and are athletes then they have a chance.

Then there are the footballers we import who tick the above boxes -refugees, children of migrants and players like Souttar, Cummings and Karacic who never set foot in Australia as a child.

In Germany there are thousands of simple small sided courts in playgrounds across the country.

We have plenty of basketball courts in Australian playgrounds. Why not football courts?

If anyone has been to Macquarie University and seen their street soccer courts this is exactly what I mean. Not sure if they are still there. Doesn’t need to be an elaborate structure or on astroturf.

Namely, a whole lot of parents, educators and law makers need to get behind having a generation of kids who don't have to go to school and just get to play football all day. (Brazil) or at the least barely go to school, or when they do, still mostly just play football anywhere and everywhere (many other top tier countries).

In the absence of this, what Mick said, though agree with pat that improved technical and tactical education are pieces of the puzzle. But it can't be unaffordable.

Basically more Westfield's sports highs? I think football facilities need to be more ubiquitous too. Its fine having structured development programs but you can't teach alot of what Brazil has.

It’s not just the “academies” / NPL teams with high costs now, I’ve played my whole life in the NSFA and nowadays every local club is just filled with useless “elite” programs operated by a bunch of high school kids.

FFA or whoever they are said he’s having a holiday and that they are doing a full review before the new cycle.

That’s the sensible approach. Not get caught up on the good result and make emotional decisions. Let GA work out what he wants, what his goals are and FA can do the same from their side. Make sure it’s a good fit before deciding.

There’s things like Mick mentioned about how do we play when we aren’t the underdog, but also I doubt another Vuka 3rd choice keeper situation will be tolerated, what youth is he looking to bring in etc..

Ive been thinking about our style of play under GA. There's some real bones there if we polished a few things up.

Its predominantly defensive, with that full team D. But there's a big counter and then high press component.

I reckon if we tweak the counter to be faster and then the high press to be smarter, it could become a national style at NT levels.

Now that the younger players-McGree,Baccus,Devlin and Kuol have been in the squad and seen that it works even against high quality sides such as Denmark and Argentina and as long as the next coach( if it isn't Arnie) sees that our boys can play that high pressing and counter attacking style it will almost be a given that we play that way.As players with better technique come through this style will generally be successful.The game against France showed that our level of pressingwas inadequate against such a skilled and fast team but even so Arnie and the boys persisted and succeeded in the next two games.

Big fan of when Arnie played the 442, rather than 433. His CCM & SYD teams were both 442 variations if I remember correctly, it's definitely the system he knows best and one that works.

I'd give him a shot at the Asian Cup (if he wants it) then bring in someone new after that.

We did try but the pace of Mbappe and Dembele and the replacement LB Hernandez easily countered the press and pushed us backwards.In the second half our pressing was totally ineffective and our shape was disrupted.However Tunisia,Denmark and Argentina were not able to negate our press to the same extent despite their weight of possession.
