Yes it probably is some time since I have seen those names mentioned in the UEFA Cup.It is over 20 years since I saw Monchengladbach play against my Scottish club Dundee United in the UEFA Cup.Two victories which no Utd supporters of that time will ever forget. We also had a victory against Werder Bremen around that time aswell. We haven,t had a lot of success since then so the memories remain very clear!! :'(
We never played against Cologne but I do remember they were one of the more well known German clubs in the UK in the 80,s and before.

This can be true. I don't know that much about it as that was before I got interested in football. But I know Dundee United.
Yeah, Mnchengladbach was the German club which played in the UEFA Cup regularly in the 70s and 80s. Do you know Jupp Heynckes? He is the player who gets in my mind when thinking about Mnchengladbach playing in the UEFA Cup.
Jupf Heyncke was the coach when we played them in 1987.We also played them in 1981 but I,m not sure if he played then as I don,t have a match programme from that game.
One player I do remember was Gunter Netzer but that was even before we played them.

Of course, Gnter Netzer; the man with the funny haircut. He now works as a TV commentator and has his own sports markteing agency somewhere in Switzerland.

The UEFA Cup matches this season were my first ones - and I hope I will live to see some more at any time as this is a grat experience.
So you have been to the old Bkelberg (the stadium) in Mnchengladbach?
No happy and I live to regret not going to the 2nd leg of our UEFA Cup semi final when we won 2-0 in the Bokelberg after a 0-0 draw at home.I do however remember quite clearly watching it on TV with my mates and going absolutely bannanas when we scored!!
I did go to the first leg of the final in Sweden against Gothenburg but we lost 1-0 and then drew the 2nd leg at home 1-1.
The other time we played them was in the 2nd round of the UEFA Cup in 1981-82.We lost 2-0 in the Bokelberg and then won unbelievably 5-0 at home.
Did you travel to any of your away matches in the UEFA Cup this season Happy?

Happy, thanks for your updates. I really enjoy reading what is going on at your club from a hardcore fan rather than media reports.

I'm interested to see what your overall impresions of Spiranovic are? Does he have a big future in Football? The reason I ask is from our National team perspective. I'm also wondering if you think he has a future at FC Nurnberg?

Also, do you think Meggsi is still wanted by the club?

Thank you. Are there any media reports about Nrnberg in Australia?

Spiro does every time he has the chance to play very well although he hasn't played that much this season so far. He has the "problem" that he is still very very young and needs to get more match time. I just read that he, Vidosic and Meggsy are nominated for some qualifiers with the Socceroos for 2010.
As we will have a huge cut after this season I think he will stay with Nrnberg, and I personally want him to as it is fun watching him playing.

Don't know about Meggsy. I am not sure if he stays for the next season as he wasn't that often in the squad since Thomas von Heesen is our new coach...Now he is on the bench as Glauber is injured...I really don't know what will happen to him...I would be sad if he has to leave as he always did his best when he played but it seems that this is not enough for the new coach.
Another thought is that it depends on in which league we are going to play next season. I can imagine that he stays if we get relegated...
But I don't know.

May ask him (if you want) about that topic as I wanted to go to training in the next few days or next week...

No, unfortunately not. I actually wanted to go to Lisbon but I had two wxams at uni on the day we played there. And the trips to Bucharest, Larissa and Saint Petersburg were too much expensive for me.  :-[

I remember it was a bit like that with the money situation for me too back then. However we qualified for European football for something like 12 or 13 seasons in a row during the 80,s and early 90,s and it remains a regret that I did not go to more away matches. It is only now that I can appreciate how good our team actually was back then.I think we just took Qualifying for Europe for granted.
I,ve already decided to follow the Mariners away from home in next years Asian Champions league.I,m not going to miss out again!  :eek:verhead:
If your team survives this relegation battle perhaps you may get that chance again yourself.

If we avoid relagation then I am pretty sure that we don't play in the UEFA Cup for quite a long time again...So I will have to wait a couple more years :(

We are stupid, stupid, stupid - that's unbelievable!

Lead 2:0 a half-time against Bielefeld and played that well that Bielefeld didn't have any chance to score. After half-time Bielefeld substituted twice which confused us totally. The result was that Bielefeld scored twice within 10mins...
We tried to score a third goal but failed...

Meggsy and Spiro were on the bench but they didn't have any chance to get in the match as our coach (who formerly coached Bielefeld) didn't substitute any player although it would have been necessary ???

Our "luck" was that Diusburg drawed aswell and that Rostock lost in Cottbus.

It was nearly sold out - just a few tickets in the away area were left.
The atmosphere was great as long as we led 2:0 but at the end there wasn't any atmosphere at all left :(

I presume that the match in Dortmund on Friday is going to be our last chance - we definitely need a win after the needless draw last weekend.

Don't think that there will be any changes beside the one that Mintal and Misimovic will both play.

Btw our coach becomes more and more unfriendly: in yesterdays paper he said that he didn't make any mistakes in the last matches as it is his job to adjust the team and not more...I don't like him...

I am curious what will happen if we lose on Friday...

No, I am not going to the match although it is a bridging day (tomorrow is Labour Day). Will watch it on TV.

Dortmund is 450km away from the town I live in.

The farest away match is Rostock with 700km.

Yeah, our public transport system is quite good. But it is quite expensive travelling by train.

Travelling to Dortmund by bus takes about 6hours. It takes 5 hours by train.
The most common thing in Germany is to travel by bus to an away match.

a bridging day

[off topic] That's an interesting expression - in French you might say 'faire du pont' or 'to make a bridge' when referring to taking a workday off to bridge to a public holiday and have a 4 day weekend, but I have to say I'm not familiar with it in English. In German is the expression similar - i.e. literally a bridge? [/off topic]

Oui, c'est faire du pont. ;) That's one of the few things I remember of my French classes...
I didn't know how to say that so I looked it up at an online translator - and it says bridging day.
It is literally translated from German. We call it Brckentag, Brcke = bridge, tag = day ;D

Is todays match broadcasted in Australia?
Maybe it is worth viewing as we are playing in front of some 75000 people in Dortmund.

Kickoff is at 8.30 pm, 4.30 am your time.

Don't know what else we could do.
Played 0:0 at Dortmund which is actually quite good but not in our position and Dortmund was very bad.
Their 3rd goalkeeper (21 years old) who played his 2nd Bundesliga match saved Dortmund the point.

It is too few for us...Now we have to hope that the other teams don't win tomorrow - especially Bielefeld...

Spiro was on the bench and Meggsy not in the squad; don't know why but assume because Kluge is fit again.

Our coach substituted twice at least but he wanted to get Charisteas (a striker) in after 89mins...but the match was over before he could make the substitution...don't know what he wants to achieve with his subs...Koller noticed after 40mins that he is injured but our coach didn't sub...That's unbelievable.
