For anyone doubting the Western Sydney team move please understand the following .. eight former NSL clubs, numerous state leagues clubs, 5 Football association, close to 100, 000 registered players has produced more Socceroos, Coaches, NSL, & A-League players than any other region
Just for the record, Marconi, Sydney United, Olympic, Blacktown Demons, Melta Eagles, Penrith City, White Eagles, Parramatta Power, some for more years than others , plus very traditionally strong State Teams in, Bankstown, Campbelltown, Fairfield City, Liverpool City. All have there infrastructure in place aside from Parramatta Power (who where owned by a RL club). The associations also have in place a massive infrastructure. In addition the NSW Football Association is relocating from Blacktown to Riverstone (about 8 KLs) but to a more rural setting and are planning to build a 40 million dollar training academy
If and it is a huge if a massive if but if this team could ever unite these various tribes behind them.. then that club would IMO become Australias biggest club within a few years.. biggest from every point crowds, sponsors, etc
The task of uniting the old NSL clubs, the state league clubs, and the Associations , is massive ,, nay mega massive squared however if they could boy would it be a huge club
The football knowledge in the various ethnic villages that make up WS is huge along with as I said the former NSL & State clubs, combined with the five football association who have those 100, 000 registered players in winter competitions (that is not counting, indoor, fultsal, outdoor 6 a side, school players, summer competitions) .
As I said earlier the region has produced more Socceroos, coaches, and players in the old NSL & A-League than any other. Look at the first choice Socceroos Harry Kwell, Timmy Cahill, Bret Emerton, Mark Schwarzer, Jason Culina, thats off the top of my head but all WS boys almost 50% of the first choice team . and from WS.
Without doubt mega potential without doubt the reason for some of the games worst problems and greatest triumphs . So many old scores to settle and not just between the former NSL clubs .. also between the Associations & the old NSL clubs
Two examples... can Granville Association forget that until the mid 1960s it was a major force and how it lost its players to one of the old NSL clubs? Can White Eagles & Sydney United fans get behind one team, the same with Olympic & Marconi?
WS has three parts main parts, being, south, centre & north. In the Southern parts of WS it is almost Football totally aside from some parts around Campbelltown, with highly mature Football knowledge, the centre part say Parramatta to Penrith shared with RL but Football juniors dwarf RL junior numbers, the North Football dominated . BTW the part that AFL is after has never had a team in RL / RU / or Football . Middle class not much football knowledge but very keen players .. few descent coaches
Another important point is South Western Sydney is poor, with pockets of wealth, Central WS is lower middle class in the main, North WS upper middle class to quite wealthy
About 2.2 million people, much younger in general than people in other parts of Sydney & NSW.. has two major expansion sites in place in SWS & NWS for an extra 1 million people
Generally public transport is poor in all parts but especially in NSW CWS would have the best public transport
Man .... Old Soccer, New Football, 2.2 million people, five association, three different regions with internal diversity within regions as well Substantial wealth differences.. Substantial knowledge differences many Europe Snobs many Old Soccer types. many New Football types..
Now they have a team can this team unite these tribes if they do it will change the Australian Sporting landscape as this team would pull TV ratings, crowds and get media space that would radiate around Australia Obie Wan (Frank Lowy) knows this.. so to does the AFL
Interesting times ahead
