The Joeys struggled against an impressive side from Côte d'Ivoire at the Estadio Guadalajara in their opening Group F match of the FIFA U-17 World Cup Mexico 2011, but came back in the second half from behind to snatch a 2-1 win. Scorers: Makarounas and Tombides.
Brasil defeated Denmark 3-0 in the other Group F game.
In Group D New Zealand beat Australia's stumbling block in qualifiers Uzbekistan 4-1.

Capacity = 20,000
behind goals = 3,000
Stands = 17,000 0r 8,500 each
the western stand was approx 3/4 full = 6,375
There is no way it was only 2,500!!!

Brazil have secured their ticket to the last 16 with a narrow but dominating 1-0 victory over Australia's Olyroos. They scored through an Adryan free-kick in the 76th minute, in their Group F encounter at the FIFA U-17 World Cup. Australia's last group game is against Denmark.

I feel sorry for the U17 lads. they hung in there and made some good chances. I doubt that some of the top flight keeps would have saved that free kick. I am sure this will give them confidence leading into the game against Denmark. Keep it up lads and fight the good fight.

They really missed Teeboy Kamara on the left in this game. Also our midfield really lacks vision, on numerous occasions the right back had moved into unmarked territory only for the mids to fail to see him and turn the ball back into the heavily populated left side.
We have a really strong striker and back line, decent wingers but the midfield just lacks a bit. If we had a brilliant #10 in this side we would be a force.

The Qantas Young Socceroos have had a 1-all draw against the Central Coast Mariners in a training match which served as their final hit out on Australian soil before the final selection of the squad that will head to Colombia later this month for the FIFA U-20 World Cup.
After a scoreless first half, with both teams having limited scoring opportunities, Qantas Young Socceroos Head Coach Jan Versleijen made two changes at half time with Matt Acton replacing Mark Birighitti in goal and Corey Gameiro coming on up front for Matthew Fletcher.
The Central Coast Mariners took the lead in the 54[sup]th[/sup] minute after Trent Sainsbury fouled Michael Baird in the box. Baird then stepped up to take the resulting penalty, blasting his shot into the middle goal giving Matt Acton, who went to the left, no chance of saving.
The Qantas Young Socceroos equalized two minutes later after capitalizing on a turn-over by the Mariners in their own defensive third. Terry Antonis intercepted the errant Mariners pass and then laid off to fellow midfielder Dimitrios Petratos who then hit a stinging right foot shot from 30 metres out into the far corner of the goal easily beating the valiantly diving Mariners goalkeeper Justin Pasfield.
After the match, Qantas Young Socceroos Head Coach Jan Versleijen was very happy with the match and the week-long training camp as a whole.
"Today we played a game against good opposition because that is what we need before we go off to a World Cup," said Versleijen
"This is the first game we have had together since returning from our tour of Holland about 6 weeks ago where we had an international tournament playing against South American, North American and European top teams and this is a good lead-up before we head to Denver for altitude training.
"The players will now leave camp and over the next couple of days I will consult with the coaching, technical and medical staff to make the final selection of the squad that will go to the World Cup,” concluded Versleijen.
Versleijen will name his final Qantas Young Socceroos squad early next week before departing for a pre-tournament camp in Denver on Saturday 16[sup]th[/sup] July where his team will play two friendly matches against the Korea Republic and England prior to arriving in Colombia to finalise preparations for the FIFA U-20 World Cup.

Qantas Australian Under 23’s Head Coach Aurelio Vidmar has named an 18-player squad for the upcoming 2012 London Olympic Games Men’s Football tournament Asian Qualifier against the United Arab Emirates (UAE) at Hindmarsh Stadium in Adelaide on the 21[sup] [/sup]September 2011.
Vidmar has selected his squad solely from the ranks of the Hyundai A-League with 13 members who were part of the squad that defeated Yemen 7-0 on aggregate over two legs in the second round of qualifying back in June.
Coming into the squad for the first time for the current campaign are local Adelaide United defender Daniel Mullen, along with Mate Dugandzic (Melbourne Heart), James Brown (Gold Coast United), Rhyan Grant (Sydney FC) and Ben Kantarovski (Newcastle Jets).
Vidmar knows that the opening match against the UAE will set scene for the rest of the qualification campaign.
“Under this competition format, it is very important to get off to a positive start, especially when playing at home,” said Vidmar.
“We will have a good ten days preparation in the lead up to the match which will include a training match against a South Australian select team.
“With all the squad currently in pre-season with their clubs, we are going to have to work hard to ensure that we are match fit by game time.
“But I am confident that the players that have been selected will be up to the challenge and they will be ready for the campaign ahead,” concluded Vidmar.
The kick-off time for the match has also now been amended to 8:00pm ACST and will be broadcast live and exclusive on Fox Sports.
The Qantas Australian Under 23’s have been drawn alongside Iraq, Uzbekistan, and UAE in Group B of the third round of the Asian Qualifiers for the London 2012 Olympic Games men’s football tournament.
Asia are allotted 3.5 slots for the London 2012 Olympic Gamers men’s football tournament.
The winner of each group from the third round will automatically progress to next year’s Olympic Games.
The three second-placed teams from the third round will clash in a playoff at a centralised venue from 25 to 29 March, 2012, and the winner of this group will then meet the representatives of CAF (Africa) for a berth at the Olympic Games.
The Qantas Australian Under 23’s will assemble in Adelaide on Monday 12 September and will play a friendly match against a South Australian select team at 7pm on Wednesday 14 September at Hindmarsh Stadium with free entry for local fans.
