I know that the first half was about not conceding (which we couldn't do) - but the back 5 just doesn't seem to work with the personnel we have.

If that means on form we play Hetherington and Paull as the two starting CBs so be it. Sainsbury, Hetherington and Roux (if played as a CB) all seem more comfortable as a RCB. Brian and Paull both at LCB.
I hate it to but if we persist with the 5/3 back then the only two wing backs capable are Doka and Mauragis. You need dribbling ability to brake the last defender to open it up which only those two have.

Then you need pace after that. Ngor Theo with Koul up top.

I still can't believe we paid €200,000 to bring back Kuol.
One of the worst business decisions the club has ever done imo. Well, not the club. Rich/Monty made that call didn’t they.
That 200k could’ve been put toward a very decent visa players salary.

He scored the goal in the AFC cup final and that more than paid his transfer. Can’t blame him we have no midfield anymore.
Good strikers always find ways to score goals even when their service isn’t great. But to say we cannot blame him, when the biggest complaint about him is his lack of intelligence on the pitch and horrific technique. Is laughable. Every knows how frugal we need to be. We paid $200k to get him back, pure idiocy. He has 11 goals in 55games all competitions since returning.

If you want to talk about return on investment, Jason Cummings scored 31 goals in 50 games for us. We paid nothing, his first 6months wasn’t on a big wage, was then upgraded, then we got a very fair fee for him.

Alou is not good enough, or anywhere near consistent. He hasn’t improved as a footballer. I hoped he would kick on after his double the other week. Oh and he is one of our top earners too. That goal he scored in that final was keeper error btw. Not a chance we ever get a return on investment for that fee and his salary.

Even when the team has been losing this season, we nearly always create great chances each game. Our biggest deficiency this season IMO (and many others) is our strikers. Goals win games, strikers score goals, ours don’t.

Some interesting comments about the transfer window... not giving much away but there's at least the possibility of some incoming players.

Good to see him talking up a couple of our players just before the window. Ahem. 😉

Had to watch the replay. Knew the score in advance (which I hate) but it allowed me to watch a little more analytically.

First half was some of our worst work. City pressed hard and we were a shambles. Again I blame structure which was improved in the second half. It was hard to watch.

Even at our best when we were decent for a fair chunk of the second half: we still lacked that last bit of quality we need in a final pass or shot.

Doka worked hard and read the game well...totally alone. He would regularly do great work, turn around to see no one had joined him and it was all for naught. Over and over. Must have been so frustrated and tiring.

Positives -
Paull is continuously improving which is what you want from your young guys. At this rate he is worth continuing the investment in time and training.
Wilson has technique and power in his shot. I'd like to see him playing in his preferred position for 15mins at least to see how he goes. That is, in place of Steele, who I believe just hasn't gotten back to the form he is capable of.
I've heard people worry about DPC but he is worth stuicking with imo, and will develop into a great prospect.

Macca made a valid observation that we are picking up points even when we aren't clicking. When we do click we have a solid base to build off at least. We were in a similar position in terms of points this time last season.

I just can’t fathom any comparisons between this season and last season. We are honking bad this season with injuries and many under performing players. This season’s team is not a shadow of the last two. I’m fearful of a new record for going from a treble to spooners.

We have the worst midfield in the comp in my opinion. If we do bring anyone in it has to be in the mids. Steele is playing at such a low level as proven by his stats it wouldn’t be hard to improve in that area.

I feel for Steeley - he’s absolutely got the attributes to be a good A-League player, but is clearly in a slump. Losing the guys that he’s been surrounded by for the last 5+ years in Maxi, Niz, Faz, Hally, and Tappy absolutely wouldn’t help, purely even from a mental perspective. Horror couple of last seasons with shitty injuries as well.

He’s been through tougher trials and tribulations before though. I back him to come good.
Before I have to duck for cover, I’m not saying the criticism isn’t warranted. I’m sure most of us know he’s better than what we’ve seen of him so far this season.

How long can we wait? Not many get this much time. He has played a lot of games in the last 3 months and seems to be regressing. How long have the knives been out for Wilson as an example. Other Coastie products like Trent and Wales cop their fair share of pastings. Seems Steele is Teflon and so much focus on someone like Paull every game who is at least improving. It’s glaringly obvious our midfield is the cause of all our problems however some think a new striker will fix that. We need competition in the mids.

I think losing Tapp has been a huge issue for our midfield. Steele and Alfie may have worked better with Brad in behind them. We do need some other options and competition in there.

Yep, Tapp streets ahead but he is ages off being ready again. We can’t afford to wait.

All those issues plus a bad team setup that gives him no one to pass forward to and possibly instruction to go backwards.

He hasn’t been terrible but is also restricted by those things that stopping him look better.

His defense has been pretty good and breaks up a lot of play.

Bit a victim of the whole team being out of sync

The CMs are a huge part of them being out of sync. I can cop that for Kuol / Edmo but I don’t think Steele can hide behind that one
