Mallia headlines generation next
When 17-year-old Mitchell Mallia was introduced 81 minutes into the Mariners 3-1 loss to Perth Glory on Sunday, he not only became the youngest ever player to represent the club in the Hyundai A-League, but also represented a large group of youngsters ready to step up, as the club begins preparing for 2010/11.
Already, National Youth League captain Panny Nikas and teenager Matthew Lewis have tasted first team action this season, while Australian Institute of Sport prodigy Mustafa Amini has won a Hyundai A-League contract for next season.
More members of the top-of-the-table NYL squad are in line to be blooded into the senior team over the final two rounds of the season, and Mallia believes that is great for not only the players development, but also to gain valuable experience which can be taken back to the youth side, for their tilt at the finals series.
Weve still got to focus on our finals, we have got our youth finals coming up soon and were going very well, but Id love another chance to show what I can do in the first team, and Im sure so would a lot of the other boys.
Its where you learn to play better. You learn from the older players, and you need to match them to stay in there so hopefully I can stay in there, and prove myself in the youth team, Mallia said.
The Australian Under 17s representative had started just five matches for Tony Walmsleys NYL side and introduced off the bench a further 10 times this season, before being told of Lawrie McKinnas plans for him last week.
I got the call up during the week, and I just stayed positive and got a bench spot. I was pretty nervous at first but the boys were tops, they helped me through it step by step and (when) I got on the pitch it was an amazing experience.
Its professional football. Everything is top class, the training and everything leading up to the match is spot on to get the best performance, Mallia said.
He admits he wasnt expecting what he heard from McKinna, when he was told of his elevation at a training session at Sohier Park last week.
No I didnt. I was just focussing on the youth team and competing for my spot every week, but I did pretty well to make the squad for the first team.
The gaffer showed faith in me, he told me to just go out and enjoy it. In front of a big crowd, with 10-thousand people hating me, it was a great experience, said Mallia.
A rite of passage for any first time traveller with the Mariners first team is an impromptu performance, singing on their initiation, usually in front of a crowd.
For Mallia, it came in the form of a rendition of Bon Jovis You Give Love a Bad Name in front of fellow passengers waiting to collect their baggage, following the return flight from Perth. He says hed trade that experience for another crack at the A-League any time.

Youth team lost to Central Coast Lightning 3-1 last night in a trial game. No older players for the youth team.

McGinley earns Youth deal
The Central Coast Mariners strengthened relationship with Central Coast Football has returned early dividends, with young Lightning star Scott McGinley earning a short term deal with the Mariners National Youth League squad.
The two parties have recently resolved to work closely at both a community and elite level following a December Annual General Meeting, which resulted in a new board of directors for CCF, led as chairman by former first grade referee Darren Sprod.
McGinley comes in to Tony Walmsleys squad in time for Saturdays home clash against fierce rival Newcastle Jets, and will remain until after the NYL Grand Final, scheduled as a curtain raiser to the Hyundai A-League decider on Saturday, 20 March.
Scott has trained with us for the majority of the season and has done well, said Mariners National Youth League coach Tony Walmsley.
After releasing Graz Trimboli, and with several of our players in the mix for first team spots over the next two weeks, we thought it was a great opportunity to reward Scott for the hard work he has put in throughout the year.
The tough central midfielder was a Killarney District junior before linking up with Central Coast Coasties in Under 11s and 12s, and then the Northern Spirit Youth Academy, before returning to the coast and the newly branded Lightning, where he made his first grade debut in the NSW State Super League in 2008.
Training with the boys this season has been great, and Im really looking forward to the opportunity.
I didnt really expect it, I just focussed on training hard, doing what was required of me, and I suppose it has paid off, said McGinley.

Wet weather has forced the postponement of this afternoons National Youth League clash between the top-of-the-table Central Coast Mariners and their local rivals Newcastle Jets.
The decision has been made in consultation with senior Mariners officials, groundstaff at Bluetongue Stadium, Match Officials and Football Federation Australia, and based on the playability of the pitch, and its resultant condition for tonights Hyundai A-League clash.
Gates will still open at Bluetongue Stadium at 3:00pm, with kick-off in the Round 26 Hyundai A-League F3 Derby between the Mariners and Jets still scheduled for 6:00pm.
A date for the rescheduling of the National Youth League clash will be advised in due course.
The Central Coast Mariners final home match of the Hyundai A-League 2009/10 season will be against Newcastle Jets this Saturday, 6 February. Kick-off is at 6:00pm. Tickets are available online at www.ccmariners.com.au <http://www.ccmariners.com.au> or by phoning 132 849.

what i dont understand is why they still have the gates opening at 3pm, do they expect fans to still come that early and do nothing
