F..k! I must have gone to the wrong ground cos the game I saw was shit!!!
I`m sure half the people around me were talking about anything but football.Hell, I would have left at half time except a chick In the row behind & down a bit (bay 46 row I seat 22 to be exact) had her tits half hanging out & i`m sure if we had scored again the girls would have popped right out!.
Maybe that`s why I`m pissed.?

I can`t agree with ZYCIE"we`re playing attactive football"
Mate, what we played tonight would put a glass eye to sleep.Boring as all f..k!

Gull..if Wilko was awesome I`ll give the game away completely.Wilko was crap! He was that bad that crowd around me was booing him every time he got the ball.

Sorry to sound negative, but I paid my hard earned & got ripped off badly.
I even thought Fury played better than us.

My analysis (for what it`s worth) is:

Ryan 6/10: had very little to do but did most things
well.
Pedj 5/10: not sure if he played, he certainly didn`t
make any of the attacking runs down the
right that we`ve come to expect.
Wilko3/10: very poor. 50% of Ryans touches came from
him.Arnie, please explain to this guy that
we change ends at half time.He plays boring
football
Dutchy8/10:this guy is gold for us, if he ever misses a
game I shudder to think what the score
would be. I nominate him to take over the
captaincy.
Rosey 6/10:did nothing outstanding but it was enough
to keep the Fury out
Griffo7/10: made an impact with his solid defence but
some of the passes out of defence went
astray & put the pressure back on us
Olly 5/10: I try to like this guy, he has great style
but it just doesn`t happen for him & he
doesn`t have the confidence to shoot.
Maybe he is too good for this level
Weemac 5/10:did a lot of defending but never went
anywhere in attack
Perez5/10: Started off well with a great run that cut
the Fury defence to pieces but after
that..nothing!
Kwassie 3/10: not one of his best games. He put in a
good header to score for us but now on
reflexion I` thinking that maybe Simons`
cross hit Kwassie in the head
Matty 4/10: Probably the worst game I`ve seen him
play.Apart from the superb cross for the
goal he was a passenger.
Amini 8/10 : this kid really added some spark to our
game but unfortunately it was like feeding
strawberries to pigs
McBreen 2/10: He breathes & has a pulse but thats about
where the similarities to a footballer
end.I coudn`t wait for Kwassie to be
hooked but after 5 mins of McBreen I
wanted Kwassie back.He was an
embarrassment really.Being hit in the
back of the head & the having a shot that
nearly hit the lnesman on the far
side,what a joke!
Doig : If he isn`t better than Wilko by a country mile
I`ll eat my hat.

Don`t get me wrong, I`ll gladly take the points, but don`t piss in my pocket & tell me it`s raining

Something else i wanted to voice,

When Musty is on I really want to see him give himself permission to fail and thereby the full confidence to lead.

Please don't misunderstand, I'm a big fan, think he's doing very well, and have an immense amount of excitement about him as a player, which is exactly why I'm bothered thinking upon it.

The fact is the #10 possy is a leadership role.
As a newly drafted in 17 year old its obviously a VERY hard thing to do, but I feel still needs to allow his instincts to completely take charge and dictate/direct the play when he is moving forward and not feel that he has to make sure he is doing the "right"thing quite as often as he is doing.

The right thing is usually only defined by whether it comes off in any case. But you can see the instincts he has are superb, and I find myself still wanting him to take a player on or keep pushing into space or the box - or expecting the ball right back like Perez does. I'm hoping he will focus on this as I believe in the future he can truly become the number 10 our country needs.

You can just bet when he plays futsal with mates he blows minds, and if is to one day reach his full potential, playing with his kind of abandon, commitment and trust is what i think is required. Because this is what shines out of all great players and has been evident in the emerging stars like Leckie, David WIlliams and Oar.

Perth 4- 2 over inbreds at the 85 min mark ... is good for us...

f**king hell MF!!! Spoiler much??
Just watching that game now while typing my Mariners game posts after getting home form our game!!!
In future can you please save your other game scores for the "other games in the round" threads - or until the next morning or something. Cheers.

But yes, good result for us though. Beat the Reds and we'll be challenging for second with a chance at an ACL spot possibly up for grabs as Roar would have to be favs to win the double.

Wow.

Sorry style, as said, I certainly agree that we weren't good. But I actually thought Pedj was one of our better players and did get forward? And that Rose was clearly the quieter of the two tonight? Also that Perez besides a couple of great runs yes, also put Kws on goal for a 1v1 as well as setting up the play and delivering the ball in behind that Matty crossed in for the Kwas goal. I thought he had a very good game for his first start/60 mins and that when he's better used and fitter will provide vastly more still again.

Ollie? I find him hard not to love? I thought he did start poorly but then had an outstanding period. I also saw him take a few shots, much as he always does? He never seems afraid to shoot to me? But could do with a bit more accuracy! I thought Weemac was probably our most absent player compared to usual but put it down to that he seemed to be taking up a narrower position and often looked more like a second screener/DM tonight.

And...now I'm really starting to doubt myself and feel a little stupid, like I need to watch a replay...
As I thought our defence was largely excellent - excepting really only its playing out being too slow at times - especially to spread it wide.
Fury got very few genuine sniffs I thought??

And Wilko being booed whenever he touched the ball??
That honestly just blows my mind?

Football is an incredible game, man people can see some thing just so differently.

But on Dutchy...

There my friend...
There we are in COMPLETE agreement.

A frustrating game but three points is a good start to the next few weeks. Thought NQF set themselves up to deny us esp with Williams tracking the runs of Rose. We really do lack quality up front, not just in finishing but in all round awareness too. With decent finishing we would all be eulogising like we did after the Sydney game. Hated the atavistic return of the pass back and the hoof down field later in the game (Atavism:atavism is a cultural tendency, for example people in the modern era reverting to the ways of thinking and acting of a former time; ioyts a return to the genetic style of old); You know things aren't going well when the crowd screams 'forward' as the ball makes its way backwards. Loved the impact of both our number 10s - Perez with his unstoppable dribbling and creative passing, Amini with the way he took control of the game. Amini already becoming a marked man as his shirt is pulled, he is tripped from behind and tackles go in over the ball.Thought NQF huffed and puffed without major threat except for one great run by former Mariner Panni Nikas which deserved greater reward. Thought McGlinchey went missing tonight but Bozanic was superb. Come the end of the season this game will have been forgotten but the three points will be in the total

Ryan – we take the reliability of this kid for granted, kicking was a bit too long for me and a bit off direction but he was otherwise excellent and loved the stand-tall save in the one on one – so Danny Vukovic! (It may, of course, have something to do with the coaching of John Frawley)
Bojic – Physically this guy is superb but mentally he goes missing. His choice of options was poor and his crossing woeful. Three times he got space on the right and three times underhit the cross – we miss Bradley Porter at moments like this especially when McGlinchey is subdued.
Wilkinson – very average, he’s the captain but there was no leadership. Hate it when he casually passes the ball back to Ryan when the faithful 5,900 crowd are all shouting ‘forward!’
Zwaanswijk – physically imposing, does all the dirty work, but this was another who did not impose himself on the game in his usual way
Rose – had a real battle on his hand with the brilliant David Williams, once being completely skinned for a chance for Payne, but, and it is an important but, it was the only time he was really beaten. Whilst Williams tracked back to deny Rose’s forward runs equally Rose did a good job in nullifying Williams to the periphery
Griffiths – NQF tactic of flooding the midfield left Griffiths struggling; an early mistake seemed to take the confidence out of his game and without Griffiths dominating our midfield struggles to shine
McGlinchey – Surprisingly ineffective; I don’t whether he was instructed to tuck in but this is the first time I can remember him not taking players on out wide.
Bozanic – quite brilliant; a beautiful drag back and turn to evade Williams; An overhead flick under pressure; a powerful shot out wide deflected by a defender and a fabulous inch perfect 30 metre pass down the line for Matt Simon to chase (typically chased until he fell over). Bozanic was up for the game and showed great skill, endeavour, composure and ball winning qualities.
Perez – he’s a real handful when he is involved, great tight confident skills under pressure – he makes things happen. Set up Kwas early, set up Simon for Kwas header, he needs more game time so that he doesn’t fade but Arnie has got the luxury of replacing him with Amini
Amini – came on and immediately changed the game. Suddenly we were in charge and he was running the show. His through ball to Simon was a real gem. It is no surprise that he was kicked out of the game – he’s just getting too good for the defenders to cope with. Faded after being hacked late and must be in doubt for Adelaide.
Kwasnik – stuffs up a one-on-one with Pasfield (no discredit to the impressive Pasfield but Kwas should score from there) and then does all the hard work and buries a tough header. I can’t be too hard on the guy who gets the winner but he does need to be more consistent
Simon – good cross for Kwas but about the only good thing he did all night. Won the ball, a high ball for a change (sic) and turned to charge toward the NQF goal and as all 5,900 odd fans screamed ‘give it to Perez!’ he over hit a tame pass to Kwasnik allowing Pasfield to impress again. Fell over, without a clue to what he would do with the ball, after Bozanic’s great ball down the line. The low point was one-on-one after a brilliant ball from Amini and with all the time in the world making Pasfield look good by hitting the ball straight at him.In fact Simon stuffed up almost everything he touched.
McBreen – useless; even Nik Mrdja couldn’t be that bad. Made Matt Simon look like Cristiano Ronaldo.
Doig – thanks for coming but better than McBreen

MoM 3 points – Bozanic
2 points shared Perez/ Amini
1 point - Ryan

Fury set up very deep. It's no surprise that our goal came from a pretty rapid string of passes that denied Fury the chance to set up their very deep 4-1-4-1 in defence.

That said, after the first 20 or so when we let them have too much ball, we started valuing possession properly and recycling the ball when options closed down in front.

As for the booing, that was coming each time the ball was passed back to Matt Ryan. What didn't get booed was Ryan then booting it long to contested areas when he had two fullbacks working hard to get their arses out and deep to the sideline to play out. Go figure.

Matt Simon is becoming a quality distributor. He's playing a role I'd describe as a number 9.5 - he's not quite leading the line, he's not quite sitting behind it, he's sorta in between. Fits what we're doing quite well.

Fair dinkum what do some of you people want (style_cafe in particular)?

We've just won pretty comfortably at home, kept a clean sheet and moved into 3rd position on the table with a run of home games to follow and games in hand.

Yes it wasn't the best game that we can play but we were rarely threatened and in control for most of the match.

If Wilko is shite then I must be watching different games to everyone else. He does the stuff that never gets noticed (like forcing opponents out wide with the ball and blocking shots), and has been consistently solid for the whole season. We'd be in trouble without him.

It's very easy to judge players when you're sitting on your arse in the stands while the team works hard week to week. We are not, and are never going to be Barcelona so don't expect us to play like them.

Perhaps to would prefer us to choke as we've done in previous seasons so that you can complain some more?

Small thing but after the game Musty was called over by a group of young fans, then kids came from everywhere.... when the team was off the field in the shed Musty was still their signing shirts talking etc .... the kid is not up himself another plus for me..

Tell you what ... I tho David Williams was best on park by a fair way ... the way he tracked back to help in defence and his speed ... would love him at the Mariners if Fury break up...

Happy with the win and I would echo Arnie's comments after the match. Kwas is a legend and has certainly struck a rich vein of form. Lets hope he keeps it going. Matt... well what can you say. He has brought another dimension to his game this season and has been wonderful with some of his distribution and passing. Then he goes one on one with the keeper and slams it into him DOH!

More importantly Adelaide lost last night to Perth which brings them within touching distance and a possible move to second place on the ladder. BRING IT ON!!

Oh... and Merry Christmas all.

Basically I want to see the type of football that we played against SFC. Is that to much to ask?
I don`t think too many would argue about the way we played in that game. It was, quality stuff.

I don`t enjoy writing negative things about the team I love, but sometimes we just have to be honest & say what we`re thinking (please or offend).

I know it`s easy to judge players when I`m sitting in the stand but I paid my money to be there & support the boys & feel that that gives me the right to pass comment.(the same as everyone else does).
The fact that my opinion differs from yours is what makes the game so great.

I should point out that against SFC I sat in bay 46 for the first half but in the second half I moved down behind the goals & sat with "the lads".
For me it was a totally different perspective on the game.

IMO the view isn`t as good as being higher but being closer to the action (when we attacked) was a lot more exciting.
So I can see why people see the game so differently.

As far as choking goes,I nearly choked when I read that comment!!!

I know I wear my heart on my sleave, but I`ll be back on boxing day having a beer in the Kendal bar before taking my seat to cheer them on.

I was happy with the win . was happy that perez tried to hide in the pack before being replaced (by a genius in the making) but was most happy at the thought that we played a bit rusty and with the next two games being season making or destroying (from a finishing point of view)

The noise from the mob in the second half was good (and if anyone who suffers from cringe factor," mariners mariners" has anything to say. please feel free to post an alternative war cry before bagging the existing)

Oh and yes to Williams. He is top of my wish list followed by Zenon Caravela fron GCU

The shot from Olly was a screamer on coourse for the top left corner. It then just brushed Storey? which took pace off it and sent it just wide.

I can see what Style Cafe is getting at, although I reckon he's getting a bit overly passionate about it. In other words, I don't think we were quite that bad but I understand the frustration. In the end, we didn't play the best even though it wasn't bad. It wasn't the type of football we were playing weeks ago which was a pleasure to watch and where we looked extremely solid in defence and fast and flowing through midfield.

IMO we were lucky to get the 3 points; NQF created a few clear opportunities to equalise especially down our left around rose who was beaten a more than a few times with nice crosses - there have been other games where our back four were rock solid with virtually every cross stifled and no penetration into the box. This game was not one of those.

Arnie's attitude was appreciated, but I wonder how long we're going to keep admitting we've got to improve without doing it. They've already proven they can play beautiful, effective football so what's stopping them doing it? I'm wondering whether the motivation is there. There were certainly times in last nights game where our players simply looked lethargic and I can't help but think back to our game against Perth where we were second to every ball all afternoon seemingly through a simple lack of determination and desire.

Anyway, we shall see. It's a sign of a good time to pick up good points when you're not playing the best. Hopefully it's just a slump from which we're about to emerge. I say that because I don't want to beat Brisbane Roar and Adelaide United because they themselves fall into a slump; that's a very negative ambition for our team and for the A-league. I want to beat Roar and AU with the type of football we know we can play; tearing them up through the midfield with beautiful passing, angled runs and players linking up; strong runs down the wings through overlaps between defense and midfield and beautifully judged switches of play from midfield. I've seen them do it and I want more!

Bex

Well-Known Member
You could be right graham but that would have been a very dangerous game to play during this match. Having said that, we do need to have a longer term view to survive the onslaught of games and NQF are probably not one of the teams we should be most concerned about. We've got some 6 point games coming up haven't we.
