The Secret Agent can reveal Melbourne Victory is actively pursuing Socceroo Alex Wilkinson with a view to adding the Korean-based defender to their squad in January.

Wilkinson’s current contract with Korean champions Jeonbuk Motors will not be renewed when it expires in December, and I understand the 31-year-old central defender is keen to use his Socceroo status to attract interest from the lucrative Chinese Super League.

If Wilkinson is unable to secure a rich deal in China, Victory would aim to add Wilkinson to their Asian Champions League initially, but not their A-League squad – due to domestic salary cap restrictions.

The impending retirement of French defender Mathieu Delpierre at the end of the current season would allow Wilkinson to be added to Victory’s A-League squad for the commencement of the 2015/16 campaign.

For a flyer like him, unless it's only a very small fracture, you surely can't expect him to be back to current form in anything less than 10 weeks. Maybe back in 6 in a best case?

Anyway, lets hope as long as we can give decent coin to Wilko, he'd prefer to come back to the coast he loves and loves him, and play with us into the grand final.

MV, will offer him a handful of games inside 8 months. Not that great an idea for a Socceroo. He should sign with us, then get loaned to China for some good coin at the end of the HAL.

As per Tony's presser, we are trialling a number of players and looking at a goalkeeper, defender and midfielder. Given previous trials and Central Coast connections my hunches (in the case of Wilko hopefully not just wishful thinking) would be

Chris Oldfield - 24 year old Vic NPL keeper of the year 2013/2014 - trialled pre-season)
Alex Wilkinson
Francesco Stella - 24 year old creative attacking midfielder who can also play left and right wing (trialled pre-season)

Oldfield:
I'd definitely take Oldfield, seen enough from him in the FFA Cup plus his LFC education to know he'd make it in the HAL; even maybe push Izzo out from No.1 spot. Which, if he doesnt make/ or have a good Olyroo's sojourn in Brazil - will be a key factor in keeping the No.1 spot

Wet dream - no brainer.

He's had a sniff of the HAL with a short stint before with Victory. He caught my eye when he did play because of his hair firstly, but more because he was a new player that I didn't recognise and he had skills on the ball technically when playing wide.

Thought gee, he's alright. But what's his overall value is the key? Can he defend, fitness, toughness, read the the game etc. Coming off the bench at Victory, just didnt get to see enough to gauge all of that stuff.

Better make it a 1 year deal in that case

BREAKING NEWS: Mariners sign Uskok

Tomislav Uskok joins the Yellow & Navy for at least the remainder of the 2015/16 Hyundai A-League season

The Central Coast Mariners are excited to announce the signing of 24-year-old central defender Tomislav Uskok who joins the Yellow & Navy for the remainder of the Hyundai A-League 2015/16 season. Tomi joins the Mariners after captaining his boyhood club, Melbourne Knights during the 2015 Victorian NPL season.
Uskok arrived in NSW to join NSW NPL outfit, Sydney United 58 but has now signed his first professional contract after trialling with the Mariners and impressing Head Coach Tony Walmsley.

The imposing centre half is eager to cement his spot in Walmsley’s starting 11 and joined his new team mates for training today at the Central Coast Mariners Centre of Excellence. Uskok also touched on his excitement towards being involved with Walmsley’s attacking and entertaining brand of football.

“I’m excited, just looking forward to the challenge and getting started with the club,” Uskok said. I was at Melbourne Knights, I’ve been there for a few years now and grew up with that club and I captained them this year.

“I want to push myself towards a starting berth and go from there, I think I’m capable, that’s what I’m here to do, I’m not here to make up numbers.

“I want to establish myself in the team and give back to the club for giving me an opportunity and as a team you want to progress into winning silverware and I want to be a part of that.”

“I’m very thankful, not many people look at NPL players but Tony’s shown that he’s willing to give people a go from the NPL with guys like Dan [Heffernan]. For a semi-professional environment the standard of play is very good, there’s definitely players in every team that are A-League level.

“The boys here are really good, I didn’t know what to expect but everyone gets along really well from what I’ve seen.

“When you play football you want to play an attacking and attractive brand of football and I think that’s what Tony’s got going, as a footballer you want to play in an attacking team and I think the Central Coast is doing that at the moment.”

Walmsley has continued the club’s mantra of giving young Australian players a chance and is confident that Uskok will be a perfect fit.

“Tomi trialled during pre-season after I’d watched him captain Melbourne Knights,” Walmsley said. He impressed us then but we couldn’t bring him into the squad due to numbers.

“When he came in pre-season he impressed us with his character and attributes, he’s six foot five and quite elegant in possession with a good range of passing.

“He will push for a place at centre back as well as a holding midfielder and joins us at a good time for both the Club & Tomi.

“As a central defender you’d like to think that in two weeks he could be available for selection but right now looking at the games ahead, we play Sunday into Thursday that might be too soon but you never know.”

It's a shame injury/yellow cards is taking such an early toll.

Playing at 110km/h with an inexperienced and thin squad is bound to do that though. Hopefully we can flesh out the numbers and build the experience and resilience soon enough to overcome it.
