Usually they have an expiry date eg for the first contact or xx number of years.
They don't just go on forever (unless that's what was in the transfer, which is unlikely).

. yeah, no doubt the contracts are complicated things and nobody is going to know what is in someone else's contract
... but I think the point was a a new deal doesn't necessarily remove a sell-on entitlement - otherwise all contracts would be re-negotiated on day one
