I think its about the Dutch school of "total football" developed in the late 60's and made famous by Ajax and then the Dutch national side. All played 433 and every player could pretty well cover any position in the team.
What that meant was if a full back wanted to bomb forward, he could as it someone else would effortlessly drop back and play in that spot.
It needs the most incredibly skilled and versatile players who have been coached that way since they were little kids. Step forward 1 Johan Cruyff
