Derby Day - 23/10/09

Disappointing since we dominated that game.

First goal was a major f**k up by Boogs and Wilko. Boogs tracked Bridges run down the left but when he cut in, he expected Wilko to pass on. Wilko had his own man and Boogs should have stayed on Bridges, who is unmarked in the box, recieves and finished. Absolutely not good enough and poor communication.

Apart from that, we deserved something. I like the Jets' forward line. Bridges who is skillful, big enough to hold the ball and makes very smart runs. Haliti is the nimble, light and quick player that we are after. They make a good combination and is what we are missing.

Surely a clear handball regardless of it being deliberate if it leads to a significant advantage for the opposing team should be worthy of being called?

???

Why?  You're punishing players for accidents then, surely that's not in the spirit of the game?

Ah look, if you think that's what should happen then that's fair enough, but that's not how the law is applied (at least, not supposed to be).  I know referees often do award a free kick when an accidental handling favours the team who handled it, and those referees are wrong in law.

The term 'deliberate' is a bit of a misnomer.  I think 'careless' would be a better way of describing it - could the player reasonably have been expected to avoid handling the ball?

I've been penalised for deliberate handball several times, and none of them I stood there and though 'I'm going to handle that ball' - which, if you take it at it's literal meaning, is what deliberate would mean.  But each time it's probably fair to say that I could've reasonably been expected to avoid it...does that make sense?

In this case, I don't think you could expect the attacker to avoid it - his arms were in a natural position as he tried to move past his attacker and the ball was deflected from close range, and unseen by that player.

Most referees call handball way too often.  I'm not entirely convinced by the way it's refereed these days - there are a number of 'types' of handling which are frequently penalised by referees but probably are completely accidental, yet everybody expects that they'd be penalised.

And yeah, it does become a highly subjective decision by the referee - and, like all fouls, different refs have different tolerance levels.

'hand to ball' is often cited, but I think this is misleading - take the case of a player with his arms out by his side who has ample time to react to the ball but allows the ball to hit his hand.  Certainly not hand to ball, but if he has ample time to react you'd definitely penalise it.

As a referee, ex-player and spectator I'm as aware as anybody else how inconsistently the law is refereed :D

As always though, 'play to the whistle' - no matter what you think has happened, YOU DON'T STOP!!!

Even if the referee made a blatant error, the goal still could've easily been stopped IMO.

From phoenix's description about the scuffle - did Heff take a dive after the 'headbutt' or just whinge to the ref a bit too hard?

Liked it that we stayed after the match longer than the Squadrunts did.

As for them having it over us, since the League began they have only won 2 more games against us. Most have been draws. Apparently if you count every time we've played that lot (finals matches, pre-season matches etc.) we are in front on wins. If the Mariners hadn't been sloppy for the first 15 minutes of last night we most likely would have come away with a win.

Anyone know why after the game and the post game clap to the away support, only the starting 11 entered the sheds and the subs stayed out on the pitch? My guess is Lawrie was giving them a serving.

Wilko - ??You hardly notice he is there sometimes. Not what you want from a captain

disagree, sometimes thats a good thing from a centre-back imo, though saying that it wouldnt hurt if he communicated to his players more

You off to see us end Rafa's reign in 33 hours?

F*ck, I wish - tickets in the away end are going at a starting price of 300 quid.

Craig - good to hear re: support.

Sweet Mother - well I guess they are trying to keep the wolves from the door.

Well I guess it depends where your standing doesn't it, I'm pretty sure you are still punishing the other 11 players by allowing a handball that significantly enables the other team to score the winning goal?

It may be an accident, but no different from penalising a player for an unintentional or clumsy trip. But intentional or not, it is still deemed as an unfair advantage and so is pulled up - and rightly so imo. Even though it is punishing a player for an accident, I believe it does certainly still fall within the spirit of the game.

That said -

I enjoyed and appreciated your efforts and post though. And I like the "careless" explanation very much - certainly better fits the actuality of the current football climate than "deliberate".

Yeah he went down trying to get Vignaroli sent off.

Not really a question about if it was a handball or not, it blatantly slapped TS right in the hand and fell right infront of the jets striker to finish it off, accidental or not thats a handball that aided in a goal, shouldnt of been allowed in my opinion, but thats football!

ts  as there running down the side line celebrating between players says "hand ball".
no one picked that up.
and it's good to see slater at his central coast hating best saying "unintentional hand ball" .it's still hand ball, Robbie just quietly .
still we played with no real game plan .the old clich holds true we came to a street fight in a dinner suit .  castanzo and ts were giants for them

That was very frustrating.  I thought we were probably the better side but our lack of technical quality found us out abit.

Danny - 8/10. Looked good and made a top save.
Boogs - 6.5/10. Was off the boil but still one of our only players capable of beating a player. At fault for first goal.
Doig - 7/10 . Fair game.
Wilko - 7/10. Fair.
Heff - 6/10 Poor game full of mistakes and caught wrong side on second goal.  However, tried really hard and tried to spark the attack.  Showed more ticker than most but down on his recent good form.
Travis - 6/10 Has good touch but too quiet. Needs to impose himself more.
Crowell - 7/10 Solid game.  Best of our middies.
Hutch - 5.5/10 Back to the rubbish from last year.  Zero penetration.
Wee Mac - 6.5  Quiet game. Tried hard but didn't impose himself either.
Kwas - 8/10.  MOM.  Tried really hard and scored fantastic goal. Could have had a hat-trick.
Matty - 7/10 Tried hard with little support.
Subs:
Dmac - 4/10. Lacking in heart i'm afraid.
Smitta - 5.5/10 OK. Not enough time to do much.
Pedj - 7/10 immediately added some spark and tried to attack
