Central Coast Mariners squad - 2010/2011 HAL season

I'm under-whelmed but I think he is a cost effective signing, adding depth if not variety - probably not having anyone else in our range available, or to risk on an unknown.

I do however think the adage, "a new signing has to be better that what you have" should be followed more often.

Hopefully this won't stop Arnie blooding some more of the NYL side.

how dare we swap an under-performing 34 year old with a younger player in the mould that suit our playing style!

+1

I'm pretty deflated about the signing, but with all the players Arnie has bought to us this year (Rose, Ollie, Dutchie, Perez etc) i'll wait a few games before I can really comment

Shrug, we'll see what happens he hasn't been playing for a team that couldn't score to save themselves, admittedly mcbreen hasn't been awesome but I'm not sure he doesn't suit our playing style, a tall striker with good heading attributes for a team that primarily whips in crosses from breaks down the wing... But let's give a guy who was average at perth a crack, worked so well for Nick rizzo

i'm gonna be brave and say he will turn out to be a good signing! i think his pace will be useful, IF he can feed off perez or if perez can feed him he will do well. just needs to convert his chances... but thats our season so far!

I agree with this. I haven't watched Baird with enough interest to definitively praise or criticise the signing, but if he knows how to finish then he is just what we need. If he starts plonking them on to the highway or over the sideline then we're not exactly worse off.

We don't need a striker to create opportunities we just need one who can finish the chances that our midfield creates. No point writing him off yet, I thought Kwas was a waste of space when we dragged him back from the Phoenix and he has done pretty well this year. I must say I'm a little nervous if he has been signed on for another 2 though!

BUT, in GA we trust

There is an audio link on this page, GA mentions at 2:25 the 'possibility of one of our young blokes leaving and going to our sister club Sheffield United'.

If they steal Musty before the end of the season, I won't be happy.

Probably Sainsbury as he was the one that Sheff Utd wanted to sign after he trained with them last summer

I assume whoever goes, it will mean much needed money in our bank account. Better get used to it too if we expect one of our major revenue streams to be the CoE

Just reading the Baird signing on 442, it seemed to me that Baird was bought to replace Mrdja as he is "out for the season with knee injury".
This should FINALLY signal the end for this waste of space.
A release of Mcbreen and the purchase of a pacy, skillful striker will see our striking force somewhat more balanced in both style and age.

Kwasnik
New striker
Simon
Baird
Bernie
all the last resort back up options such as hutcho, perez etc.

Not world beating but would do the job for a top 4 spot at least.

We've certainly been crying out for more options and depth upfront... but it's pretty hard to be excited about signing a player that hasn't even made the squad of the worst performing team in the league for the past six weeks. And after Mrdja, Mc Callister... McBreen... it's hard to be too confident about Baird...

However, GA says he knows him, and, what surprised me, says he's completely different to what we currently have. Which sounds more promising... fact is if he has pace (which has been alluded to several times) and positions himself well, with Musty and Perez, he will get his chances to score goals... So like always I'll reserve judgement until he's had a fair chance...

So who will start this week?

Presumably McBreen, with Baird to come off the bench at around 60 - unless McBreen is having a blinder.

Anyhow, good players do have bad periods and clubs/teams where it just doesn't work out. So let's all hope he has some genuine quality and GA and the team can bring it out of him. If he turns out to be as good as Rose I'll be ecstatic.

Interesting stuff....

I just hope that the Baird signing is part of Arnie freeing up more cap space for major signings next season.
