Shoutout Garang Kuol, man.
- He joined #NUFC for around £300k in January 2023 aged 18, amid intense media attention as a result of his bright cameos at the Qatar World Cup - including one against Lionel Messi’s Argentina.
- Labelled at the time as one of the best young talents in world football, he was swiftly sent out on loan to Scottish top flight side Hearts (solely because they had some other Aussies whom it was thought he could gel with!) - but was given just 197 minutes of game time in almost five months.
- Having not learned from the Hearts debacle, Newcastle sent him back out on loan again when he returned to the club in the summer of 2023 - this time to lowly Eredivisie outfit Volendam. Predictably, it didn’t work out - he started just eight games in TEN months under a very defensive - some would say “anti-football” - manager. The team was relegated, and Kuol’s sharpness and confidence had been completely shot to bits.
- He returned to Tyneside a shadow of the player Newcastle signed in 2023, understandably given the circumstances - and his plight worsened further when he suffered a muscle tear in an August training session which kept him out of action for around two months. Crucially, though, this meant he was unable to go out on loan for the 2024/25 season - a blessing in disguise, perhaps?
- After what was undoubtedly a tough and gruelling period of recovery, during which he turned 20 years old, he made his first competitive appearance for the Magpies’ Under-21 side in October last year - in an EFL Trophy match against Mansfield. He then played one more U21 fixture away at Tamworth in the National League Cup before the youth team entered a month-long winter break.
- When he returned in January, something changed - whether that be mentally, physically or both. In his first game after the aforementioned break, the Australian netted his first EVER Toon goal in an U21 league match at Southampton. Little did he know, this was just the start.
- Next up was Gateshead in the cup - which brought about a goal and an assist for Kuol. A league assist at West Brom followed a fortnight later, before he struck once again at home to Leicester in the same competition. His red hot form has not showed any sign of letting up, either. A cup brace at Altrincham last Tuesday preceded yet another assist last night against Stoke at Whitley Park, which was the icing on top of an irresistible attacking performance under the lights.
- That made it 8 goal contributions in his last 8 games in all competitions for United’s second string - consisting of five goals and three assists. If that doesn’t signify how good he’s playing at the moment, I don’t know what will.
In summary, Garang Kuol is enjoying his football at last. He’s playing with real freedom and confidence right now, thriving in a newfound right wing role in which his direct style has proved extremely effective, and that good feeling is really shining through in his performances. His pace, skill and end product is quickly becoming a joy to watch - defenders simply cannot live with him. Who knows what his future will bring?
Moral of the story? Development is NEVER linear, it plays out differently in everyone’s personal story. Garang - you deserve this. Keep going.
