Kalac tells Jedinak - Don’t risk being crucified in the A-League:
16x9_medium.jpeg

Former Socceroos skipper Mile Jedinak has been advised to give the A-League a wide berth by former golden generation goalkeeper Zeljko Kalac.

The ex-AC Milan gloveman, who had stints as goalkeeping coach at Sydney FC, Western Sydney Wanderers and Melbourne City, says Jedinak, 36, should continue his career in Europe, rather than risk being “crucified” back in Australia.

Released by Aston Villa at the end of last season, Jedinak has been courted by expansion club Macarthur FC, though he will 37 when they enter the competition in 2020-2021.

Meantime, UK-based Jedinak - who has 90 Premier League appearances and 147 in the Championship - remains clubless on the eve of the A-League kick-off, and declined to comment on his immediate plans when contacted by The World Game this week.

Kalac cited players like John Aloisi, Harry Kewell, Vince Grella and Lucas Neill, who returned at the back end of their careers and struggled to make telling impacts.

“There’s the risk of going from cult hero status to being crucified by people - look what happened to Johnny Aloisi when he came back (from Spain for spells at Central Coast and Sydney FC),” explained Kalac.

“The guy was playing with no meniscus in his knees at the end there. But he’s the man who got us to a World Cup yet got hammered for one bad season.

“These players come back and cop all the criticism - it’s not worth it. There’s no respect in this country.

“If I’m Mile, I’d play on if I can find a club in Europe - and I’m sure he’s had offers - but I definitely wouldn’t return to Australia to play.”

Kalac did offer one caveat, saying if Jedinak got a gig at a Melbourne Victory or Sydney FC he would at least have better players around him and might be able to live up to some of the expectations heaped on returning national team stars.

“He’s a leader and a great professional - but a lot would be expected of him,” he added.

“If he went to one of the smaller clubs he’s waiting for trouble.

“Tell me which golden generation players who returned home really stood out? The reality is most returned past their use-by dates.

“Guys like Mile have played at such a high level, you want to stay there and bring up the players around you, but they won’t follow.

“There are good players here, but overall the cattle isn’t good enough.

“We probably have five or six young guys in each squad who don’t deserve contracts. But that’s the way the salary cap works.”

Kalac is convinced Jedinak, who led Australia at last year’s FIFA World Cup in Russia, will already have rejected a number of offers from English clubs.

“I’m sure there’s been interest - maybe it’s come down to agreeing on wages. But he could certainly do a job for a club (outside the Premier League).”

Having flopped in the 2018-19 A-League season, Western Sydney and Central Coast have cause to be optimistic heading into their opening round clash.

Kalac's opinions ae not worth the paper they are printed on.

The Aleague is not the problem. The problem is players, who are past their use by dates, who think they are still good enough to play here, but are not.

Why Syd FC or Victory. The expectations there would ensure criticism. If he went to a smaller club that would not happen

All the golden generation he mentioned were mid 30s when they played here. Sorry but too late then.

Harps hero signs for Australian soccer club
POPULAR PLAYER WILL BE LONG REMEMBERED

Chris Ashmore

6 Nov 2019

Harry Ascroft, who scored the second goal in Finn Harps' Promotion/Relegation Play-off second leg decider against Drogheda, has signed for an Australian club.

The popular player, who joined Harps last season, is set to play for Dandenong Thunder SC in Melbourne.

The club posted the news on its twitter account.

Ascroft, a defender or midfielder, was out of contract with Harps when the season ended.

They compete in the National Premier Leagues Victoria.

Ascroft, who was born in Sydney, played for a number of Australian teams before moving to Europe where he join Dutch club VVV-Venlo in the Eerste Divisie.

He later moved back to Australia to play for Central Coast Mariners in 2015.
He represented Australia at under-20 level.

He missed much of the first half of the season with Harps through injury, but was invaluable in the second half and scored a number of crucial goals.

Not exactly conquering the world but Appiah scored a nice goal for WU on the weekend. The kind of finish all of his previous clubs would be saying 'where was that when you were here?'

Certainly not conquering the world, but thanks to MVC for taking him off our hands: Stormy hooked at the half. Not surprised.

Mariners around the World | December

With the Central Coast Mariners Academy and youth squads famous for producing a number of talented individuals who have gone on to great heights, here at ccmariners.com.au we’ll be keeping an eye on the Mariners of yesteryear to see where they are at in Mariners around the World.

Mat Ryan – Brighton & Hove Albion

Ryan started the month of December off brightly, playing a big hand in Brighton’s win against Premier League giants Arsenal and putting in a number of other strong performances throughout the month. Draws against Wolverhampton and Crystal Palace helped them to 13th spot approaching the halfway mark of the season, despite a loss to Sheffield United.

Tom Rogic – Celtic

Midfielder Tom Rogic opened the month of December with a goal against Ross County as his Celtic side made it 10 wins in a row, and he continues to be an important part of their team as they chase another Scottish Premier League title.

Oliver Bozanic – Hearts

Oliver Bozanic played the first half for Hearts in a 2-0 loss to Rogic’s Celtic, and more recently scored his side’s only goal in a 2-1 loss to Hamilton that left Bozanic’s team in 12th place with just 12 points.

Bernie Ibini – Jeonbuk Hyundai

Bernie Ibini had reason to celebrate as December kicked off, winning the K-League title in Korea with Jeonbuk Hyundai, who he joined earlier this year. It was a tense finish to the season with Ibini’s side only sealing the title on the goals scored tiebreaker.

Mustafa Amini – AGF

Mustafa Amini scored a 25 yard winner in stoppage time to clinch a 2-1 away in against Esbjerg early in the month, before playing 90 minutes as his side beat ladder leaders FC Midtjylland to sit third while the league breaks over Christmas.

Danny Vukovic – KRC Genk

Sidelined after a horror injury earlier this year, fans have been excited to see Danny Vukovic getting back to work as his rehab continues ahead of returning to first team action.

Thoughts on these two youth players heading off to Serbia OFK Belgrade for a few months?

https://www.ccmariners.com.au/news/two-mariners-youngsters-headed-europe

Two Central Coast Mariners youngsters will head overseas this week to pursue their footballing dreams, with Joey Jevtic and Jake Jovanovski joining OFK Belgrade’s U/19 side in Serbia on loan until the end of the 2020 season.

Jevtic and Jovanovski are recent products of the Mariners Academy and will link up with the Belgrade side thanks to an already existing relationship between OFK and Mariners’ Co-Chairman Anton Tagliaferro.

OFK Belgrade is one of the oldest teams in Serbia and was the winner of four League championships in former Yugoslavia. The boys will play against the likes of Red Star Belgrade and Partizan Belgrade in the U/19 championship.

Jevtic, who has been with the Mariners for four years and was a feature in Nick Montgomery’s NYL side this season, said he was looking forward to the chance.

“To be going to play in a great footballing country like Serbia will be an incredible experience. Hopefully I can go well over there, play at my best and really improve as a player.”

Jovanovski echoed Jevtic’s sentiment, saying he was excited for the opportunity to prove himself in a historically strong footballing nation.

“I was asked if I wanted to go and play for OFK for 5 months and once asked I was never going to turn down the opportunity” the 18-year old said.

“It’s very exciting to be able to get exposure to European football in a country like Serbia which is known as a very strong and competitive footballing country.”

Tagliaferro said he believed the opportunity presented a great chance for the boys to prove themselves in a very strong league, and said it served as a reminder of the pathways the Mariners have put in place for young footballers at the club.

“Our club now has in place strong recruitment processes for identifying the best young players around Australia.

“Once identified we offer opportunities to bring them to the club to develop them to their fullest potential. “

“At the Mariners we have now established a group - which I chair - made up of Alen Stajcic, Nahuel Arrarte ,Nick Montgomery and Ken Schembri which meets monthly where we discuss which young players around the country our coaches believe have strong potential and then we work out the best way of how we can bring these players to the Mariners. “

“In addition to this we also discuss the best potential pathways for each young player at the club and we all agreed that Joey and Jake both would benefit greatly from a loan period to a great club like OFK Belgrade.”

Upon arrival in Serbia next week the boys will train with the OFK Belgrade U/19 side and go on a training camp to Macedonia with the squad to train and play some friendlies before the under 19 competition in Belgrade restarts in February.

JOY AND JACK ON CARABURMA

Joey Jevtic and Jake Jovanovski, products of the Central Koust Mariners Youth School in the Australian city of Gosford, are new residents of Karaburma. Accompanied by the owner of the Baltic Baltic Sea and CC Mariners co-owner Anton Talafer, these young men arrived at the Youth Stadium as part of a sports-financial collaboration that has been ongoing for over a year.

Joey and Jake have come to football training at OFK Belgrade Academy of Football which is recognized as an ideal place for young players to develop, and will strengthen our youths, led by coach, Darko Smiljanic.

Joey Jevtic is a midfielder and was born on August 2, 2001. He is a member of the Australian national team under 23. Jevtic is a father from Mladenovac and her mother is Australian.

Jake Jovanovski is an offensive outside player born on March 7, 2001. And Jake traces his roots from these parts through his father who was born in Bitola and his mother is from the United Kingdom.

On the official site of CC Mariners, fans were informed of the departure of their two young players to the football specialization in Serbia and OFK Belgrade Youth School, and our new players conveyed their expectations, which are very positive. Also on the official club Facebook page this news received a lot of comments where the whole idea was explained by the co-owner of the club. By the way, the Mariners are one of the 8 original founders of Australia's highest quality "A League", and in 2013 they were champions.

These two young men continue the journey that the Malta boys, Nil Frendo and Zak Grek, have taken before them. You can check out the impressions of one of these two guys, the popular Tali HERE!

It should be said that our sport friend and benefactor, Anton Taljafero, a guest Caucus OFK Belgrade in 1994 gwhere after a nice get-together, he also received some gifts.
