Brought a workmate to the game last night who brough his wife. She has never been to a live football game and understands very little about the game.

Did she have a good time regardless of the average football and interesting weather??  Always good to get another to the cause I reckon....

Andrew - they both start with H.  Explains the Hyphenator at Newcastle too.  ;)

was not alot to get enthused about (bad weather, poor game, tickets $50, bad home end coordination and support etc) but regardless I think they had a good time

bought scarves especially for the game

The touch of an Elephant, the balance of a Giraffe eating off the ground, the brain of a Sea Urchin, ... I think he has a photo of a senior FFA official doing something they should not have.. or ... he is the love child of a senior FFA official..

Being as kind as I can he is not in the same class as others on the park..

Whatever else is true or not, he did have a volley that didn't miss by much and Sean's right - had Cahill had that people would've been gushing into their boots over him. His ball through to McDonald was beautiful too and deserved a far better attempt from McDonald. There were other balls he hit that were good too.

Against him is that at times he does a passable impression of a headless chook, his touch is sometimes awful and he's certainly not in Cahill's league.

But in his favour is that 9/10 involvements he has are simple things where he's worked harder than anyone else to get to a spot and win the ball, where he plays a dead simple touch and pass or where he's cobbling together attempts on goal from not a lot. Hasn't scored yet, but neither has McDonald. The chances are coming, one will go in.

For all the bagging of Holman and lionising of Carle, what do we have to go on that suggests Carle's a better bet? To pre-empt responses, purporting to know better than Pim is no reason at all.

He's a long way short of our best player, but he's a bloke who cops more than he should. He's not so bad that he's costing us games, and frankly I'd rather him than some bloke who won't work as hard, won't create the chances he does (other players don't miss as often because they don't get the chance to) and remains anonymous.

Frankly, Jedi had a worse game last night. Out of position as often as not in defence, beaten for pace a few times and basically not quite up to the standard on the night. Jedi's a fine player and he had an off night, but surely consistency demands we call for his head, right?

So did some others........ not that they will confess to being seen with OFFICIAL MERCH.  ;)

Dibo - Holman has scored before, so that particular monkey was off his back long ago.  His attempt last night was missing before it deflected too, but hey, Lampard's made a career from it.  :p

I just want to know what it is that you and Sean see that the 40 000 there last night (plus the Uzbek game, plus the bollockings he's copped from fans in Japan, Thailand, and I'm reliably told our Middle Eastern games as well) don't??  Repeatedly and often??  Getting booed by your home crowd that often....... surely that must mean something??

Can't they just add it to the collection, and the yellow wigs?

Note the crowds reaction to his substitution - biggest cheer of the night

was watching the game at the cclc and obviously pim isnt the only one that has a thing for lolman, every word that slater and hill said on foxsports was positive and that the cheering at the substitution was for their excitement to see nicky carle

An issue so utterly perplexing I feel it deserves its own thread..... as the song goes:

Why Why WHYYYYYY, Brett Holman??

Can anyone seriously come in here and give me an actual reason as to why he continues to be selected, and if so, can you _HONESTLY_ justify his position within the squad, let alone the starting XI??

because you touch yourself at night.

Solid, well thought out answer.  :p

Look Sean, I don't mind the "hard running" and the whatever (goodness knows someone like Tevez does it at Man U, and Tommy used to do it for us all the time), but there's gotta be an end product.  Yes, one great pass..... does that _really_ make up for the remaining 89.9 minutes of shit??  This isn't a "lynch mob" situation - a lot of us thought he was great when he first started out for the Roos.  It all went downhill at the Asian Cup (believe me, we gave him a bollocking there too) and he's gotten worse since then.

I didn't even have to start the "Why Why WHYYYYYY, Brett Holman" song last night - the entire Home End was doing it for me.  THE ENTIRE CROWD BOOED HIS NAME AT THE START OF THE GAME, BOOED HIM WHENEVER HE F*CKED UP (which was a lot), AND THEN SUBSEQUENTLY CHEERED HIS SUBSTITUTION, DOES THAT NOT TELL YOU SOMETHING??

He is a wretched product of the Arnold era, and the sooner he is done away with the better.  Carle showed more in his 10 minutes last night than Lolman has in his last 10 games.

I was down the bottom of the home end, and I heard neither a song with Holmans name, or booing. what does that say?

Im just saying why does his performance last night deserve a thread? I would like someone to analyse where he goes wrong, instead of a thread just saying "He's shit". Where the fk is Macdonalds thread?! his effort last night warranted a thread more than Holman. How many goals/sitters/chances did he make a meal of?

I will still defend that Holman played a decent game last night, sure he lost some ball and some touches go wrong but the ground he makes on the field, and the ability to relentlessly turn and go forward and kick the team into its attacking gear is invaluable i.e Pondeljak.

That you have selective hearing??  Bet you don't hear the Hutch songs and abuse at Mariners games either??  Go and have a look at what your Sydney mates are saying on sfcu.com.au - you'll find more of the same there.  Or what my mates in Melbourne are saying, or even what those dastardly little Scummers are saying.  F*ck, even the GGA forum hates him.

This thread is not based on his performance last night.  Sure, it inspired me to start it, but this thread is based on his ongoing shitness..... 26 or something caps now, and 24 of those games have been utter trash.  Like I said earlier in the thread (an analysis I provided, not just "he's shit" - do you even read these things??), you can run around like a Tommy or a Carlos Tevez all you want, but if there's no end product, or if it's so rare (the pass for Macca's miss) you have to wait 5 games a time for it to happen, then why is it persisted with??

_Some_ touches go wrong??  9 out of 10 is not some, it's a high majority, and when he's deployed as a second striker/No. 10 - you can't have that sort of error rate, especially not at International Level.

And feel free to make a thread about Macca if you feel so strongly about him..... just remember to analyse, not use the ol' "waaaah, he hasn't scored" chestnut.  Look how that worked for Matty Simon.

Im seeing the missed touches and the passes going astray, but im not seeing the absolute shitness that deserves a bollocking, this is why im comparing to Macdonalds game, how does he escape the fury of the fans after game after game of not scoring goals or replicating his worth in the SPL? is he next in the picking order for the wrath of the fans?

I dont have selected hearing, its just what i didnt hear. Remember you were surrounded by a core support with the same hatred for holman, which in fact i had a few parrots around me yelling constantly about his ponytail. of course youre going to hear the boos where you were.

In all seriousness, id take him in a heartbeat. Would run rings around most in the a-league.

Ditto. I don't know where people imagine the standard of the A-League to be, but Holman would carve it (until he came up against Culina, of course, who is going to destroy).
