Brett Holman..... why??

An issue so utterly perplexing I feel it deserves its own thread..... as the song goes:

Why Why WHYYYYYY, Brett Holman??

Can anyone seriously come in here and give me an actual reason as to why he continues to be selected, and if so, can you _HONESTLY_ justify his position within the squad, let alone the starting XI??

+ 1.  I've never understood it either. He is a mediocre player. I hope that's the last we see of him in the green and gold. Either Lolman has a very good manager, or Pim needs glasses. It's  :headbutt: stuff.

Time and time again I've _tried_ to understand it, I really have..... I was optimistic about his future Socceroo-ness after his debut against Ghana and his second game where he scored against China, but since then it's been an utterly painful downhill slide, and it's getting worse with every game.  Tonights efforts by him were just comically awful on a whole other level.

I just hope Lolman's run last night was Pim's way of making sure he's NOT Socceroo material. Gawd help us if he gets a jersey.

The only reason he is in the squad is his ability to run non-stop. Pim wants a player that will pressure in defence at the front for extended periods of time. Its just a shame that he has no quality.
In Cahill you get both.

Just looking forward to getting Brett Emerson back on the park, he is sorely missed.

If Cahill missed the shot Holman had in the first half, you would all be raving on and saying hes applying pressure and hes "clarsh" etc
Absolutely NOOO recognition for the perfectly placed ball to Big Mac who skied it over the bar. Nor the fact he ran his ass off for the majority of the game and had more involvement than Harry "poster boy" Kewell.
nup, the lynch mob have made their mind up.

You, sir, are a nincompoop.
Watch the replay!!
Everytime he touched the ball was an affront to kangaroos.
If you don't agree, then answer this....honestly: Did he score? Did he set up every play?

Sorry Sean, the guy is barely HAL level.

An absolute disgrace to the Gree n and Gold and with a 1st touch like that the Dutch must keep him for entertainment value only.

Note the crowds reaction to his substitution - biggest cheer of the night

Are you related to Lolman?

Solid, well thought out answer.  :p

Look Sean, I don't mind the "hard running" and the whatever (goodness knows someone like Tevez does it at Man U, and Tommy used to do it for us all the time), but there's gotta be an end product.  Yes, one great pass..... does that _really_ make up for the remaining 89.9 minutes of shit??  This isn't a "lynch mob" situation - a lot of us thought he was great when he first started out for the Roos.  It all went downhill at the Asian Cup (believe me, we gave him a bollocking there too) and he's gotten worse since then.

I didn't even have to start the "Why Why WHYYYYYY, Brett Holman" song last night - the entire Home End was doing it for me.  THE ENTIRE CROWD BOOED HIS NAME AT THE START OF THE GAME, BOOED HIM WHENEVER HE F*CKED UP (which was a lot), AND THEN SUBSEQUENTLY CHEERED HIS SUBSTITUTION, DOES THAT NOT TELL YOU SOMETHING??

He is a wretched product of the Arnold era, and the sooner he is done away with the better.  Carle showed more in his 10 minutes last night than Lolman has in his last 10 games.

I agree with some of your comments Serious but Holman would be in my World Cup squad. I think he will add impact to the team as an attacking player in the last 20 or 30 mins of the game as he tries so hard. I think he is another like Scott MAC who needs some confidence when he plays for the national team and i would like Pim to persist with him and maybe he discovers it again. He should play in the Asian Cup qualifiers where he is a chance to show his ability against lesser opposition.
I think we all know he has the ability however he is struggling to put it on the pitch for the national team at the current time.

He's had his chance against lower quality Asian opposition - see his performances against Oman and Thailand in Bangkok....

"I think we all know he has the ability however he is struggling to put it on the pitch for the national team at the current time." - I must respectfully disagree.  Based on the comments and general hatred towards him last night, I think a lot of "we" are fed up with his constant shitness and want someone like Carle given a go....

Looking forward to 2014 Holman will be in his prime and is one of the players who must be kept in the squad. As everyone knows we dont have the depth in the age group of 23-27 which we had at the last World Cup in Germany and a lot of the current squad wont make it to Brazil. I think Holman is good enough to go to South Africa and it is vital he does for futher improvement personally and for the national team as a whole.
I understand what you are saying about Nick Carle but i got a chance to watch a lot of the Championship and him whilst in England last season and he really does struggle at that level with the physical nature of that league. I would rather take Holman rather than Carle to World Cup. Personal opinion and i know a lot will disagree. He was ordinary last night against Bahrain but i think he has more to offer.

Fair enough.  Thanks for actually debating it though.  ;)

Brought a workmate to the game last night who brough his wife. She has never been to a live football game and understands very little about the game.

The Lolman chants went up before the game and she asked me why. I said to her to watch him play for a little while.

After thirty minutes she I understand why everyone hates him - he can't control the ball and passes the ball to opposition.

She then asked why does he get picked then and right then the "arnold out" chant went up.

I had to then explain the graham arnold story.

A complete novice like her gets it and I too am perplexed why he constantly gets selected.
