Figured it was close enough to the end of the year for this, plus most of us are busy tomorrow night.
Best Albums
Coldplay - Viva La Vida (Or Death And All His Friends)
They seem to be following the Star Trek Theory for now (that is, only their even numbered stuff is any good), but this album, from the production to the songwriting to the booklet art, is nothing short of astounding. Took what many considered to be a tired genre (contemporary adult pop-rock, for lack of a better description) and turned it on its head with some truly amazing songs. Would be a travesty if it did not win Album of the Year at the Grammy's.
The Mars Volta - The Bedlam in Goliath
Continuing where Frances the Mute and Amputechture left off - sending the listener on another journey somewhere different every time the album is played. Stunningly excellent musicianship, and a completely and utter mind f*ck.
The Ting Tings - We Started Nothing
Quite frankly, indie pop had gotten boring. Every other band wanted to be the next Franz Ferdinand, but these two went "not for us thanks". Eminently danceable to as well.
Muse - H.A.A.R.P. Live from Wembley Stadium
Technically a live album/DVD, but any excuse to get Muse on the list. The gig included on the DVD is, quite simply, one of the most amazing things I have ever seen, and the only thing that could possibly be better is seeing them live in the flesh.
Movie
Really, did you expect me to put anything else at the top?? Graphic novel movies were starting to be taken semi-seriously, but this really put them over the top. The opening bank robbery and Hong Kong scenes were nothing short of in IMAX, not to mention a thoroughly intriguing character study of the nature of good, bad, and anarchy. And then there was Ledger's performance - sorry Jack, your Joker's been beat. Plus, Batman is just awesome. ;D
TV
30 Rock, Series 2 and 3
A show with a script so razor sharp you could shave your face on it. If you havn't watched this yet you owe it to yourself to rent Season 1 on DVD and laugh your arse off for however long it goes for. Quite possibly the funniest thing Alec Baldwin has ever done, and Tina Fey is outstanding as always.
Generation Kill: A Seven Part HBO Miniseries
Of course no-one saw this here, free-to-air wouldn't touch it if its life depended on it. Get it on DVD/acquire it online, it really is worth your time.
