From the Oz today

http://www.theaustralian.news.com.au/story/0,25197,24289816-7582,00.html

Next on to the newsstands on Thursday will be Australian Football Weekly, which has a print run of 30,000 and will cost $4.95.

Pitched at 18 to 34-year-old soccer fans, the magazine will cover the local A-League competition as well as the World Cup, international clashes involving the Socceroos, the UK Premier League and Australian stars playing overseas. Editor David Hall was previously a reporter on FoxSports.com.au.

News Ltd are putting this out I believe.

So it will be shit

Agree in spades - Since when has the Australian, with its huge AFL bias, ever done anything useful for football?

it's a pretty significant investment just to get the wheels turning on one of these jobs - setting up the staff, getting layout, promotion and whatnot sorted out takes a lot of effort before a drop of ink hits paper.

with the required investment for all this i don't think it'll be shit at all because frankly it's bad business. it'll likely be in the mould of rugby league week - an ins and outs and all account of football each week, it'll probably have things like state league, youth league and w-league wrap-ups.

for all that, i won't pass judgement til i pick up a copy.

If the high point of all football writing is WSC (When Saturday Comes). Leftish, fan based and utterly brilliant, and 442 is the mid point, where do you reckon this will sit???

There are v few Australian journo's who know anything whatsoever about the game so expect it to be like any of Uncle Ruperts rags. Populist, trivial and with a reading age of about 7

there's got to be a place for quality to start from, doesn't there?

a mass readership, fully formed, critical and high quality press doesn't just appear from nowhere. the market for it needs to be cultivated too - a readership needs to grow and develop.

i see where you're coming from, but i think that as with the a-league itself we've got to tolerate a bit of a plastic taste to it before we get to the caviar.

There are also some reasonable football writers simply covering games in state leagues around the country who are more than capable of stepping up.

"UK Premier League" is the point in the media release where i decided i will not be purchasing this. Combine that with the fact that info is readily available all over the internet.

Yeah would prefer a purely Oz mag. There is plenty of football in oz to fil a mag a week. Look at how much space the tele wastes on thugby a day

lol, thats not what i meant. Was pointing out the fact that they cannot even name the league correctly, therefore i have no confidence in their ability to put a decent mag together.

What Dibo said.....

That said, at least it is some attempt to raise the profile of Football in Australia, albeit lining the coffers of News Ltd at the same time if it has any success.

But really, in this country, who else can we get to broadly publish such a mag? They also, through their Fox Sports and EPL & A-League connection, have a hell of a lot of pull in getting articles from the official broadcaster for many leagues. I'd spit, however,  if it meant nothing more than just a lot more column space given to the likes of Harper and Slater to editorialise all things "Bling".

Keensy does have a good point too. Has the internet forums and fans' sites way of getting info become more in tune to what is out there in the way of info, and particularly when they spruike about pitching to 18-34 yo fans? Why would such an avid user of the net bother buying a magazine filled with info they already know?

Great post Clarence. 18+ is the net generation and instant information. Magazines such as WSC and, to a lesser extent 442, tend to write background articles, explore themes and cover history etc.

They dont regurgitate what we can all get instantly somewhere else.

As Dibo said these things cost heaps to get going ........... I assume there research will tell them the type of things to publish........ if they just put up tables and stats on players that is on the net it will have a fairly short life ......... but if its gets onto high quality writing by some people with football knowledge then there is a place along with 442.

Thursday will tell anyway ....... like Dibbo I will hold judgement until then.

that's why it's going to have to have journalism rather than merely reporting.

Indeed

Read this season's The Full 90 for a good guide ... it is produced by the same mob!

The quality is a little below the previous F90 which was produced by 4-4-2.

The marketing demographics appear odd .... I would think that the bigger market is the same age range but female! It is they who buy mags. Perhaps it will be a -"buy this for your 'guy'" promotion.

Yes, they should stay away from content that appears on the web.
:ashamed:

They could also try a small slice of Women's League, NYL, and state league content ... no one else covers it (on paper)!

I admit it - the first thing I do when I enter Bluetongue (or any other stadium) is to buy a Full 90. Don't like the new format too much, but still buy it all the same.

Yes, we girls are magazine junkies and I will buy the AFW. Bought my 4-4-2 yesterday. Do I need therapy?  :innocent:
