Perth Glory have unveiled their new home and away kits for the 2017/18 A-League season.
View attachment 944

Similar to Brisbane Roar, Glory have ditched their one-colour jersey and gone with white sleeves on the home kit for the upcoming campaign.

The away shirt is just an inverse of the home kit, predominately all white with purple sleeves.

One of the most noticeable features on the new kits is the big size of long-time sponsor QBE on the front of the shirt.

Damn that's ugly, Macron are capable of some great kits but that's horrific. They did a wonderful job with Aston Villa's a few years back. That shirt just looks like someone found purple training bibs.

Wombie, here's a question for you
(& anyone else ) to ponder on this very point over the duration of our coming season & it's one that I've given some thought to since we signed them ....

Antony Golec / Kye Rowles ??

- Both have predominantly played the majority of their Football at the CB position.
(Golec mostly CB some LB, lists that on his Wiki ... Rowles def w/Olyroo's, unsure? at Roar Youth, but lists CB only on his Wiki)

- Both are Left footed players

After releasing Faty and Posco, I assumed on signing Golec, (based on his playing position history & just arriving from x3 Asian clubs that signed him specifically for the CB role)
- that he'd be an out'n'out CB for the Mariners & to be the main pairing with Alan Baro
- especially based on the troubles we had in this area last season with considerable chop'n' changing with the likes of McGing, Ashcroft, Poscoliero, Faty, Junior & even Montgomery to choose from.

Then Okon signs Rowles, much younger with far less game time given to him at Roar & assumed he would be considered as 'back-up' to one of the x2 CB's, with possibillity of covering at LB for (the previous to him re-signing of) Josh Rose.

After seeing Okon playing Golec at LB in the trial at Pluim v CC Allstars, my assumptions of AG predominantly playing at CB went flying out the window.

Likewise for Kye Rowles.

I think the decision of who?? to play alongside Baro is going to be a real telling factor in our quest for success this comming season and quite possibly become a work in progress for Okon, & one to keep an eye on throughout the season.

We may well see a repeat of last seasons "chop'n & chang'n" going on, with an even longer list of candidates capable of playing at CB:
Baro
Golec
Rosey
Rowles
McGing
Ashcroft
and don't forget .... Junior !

@ Season's end, we could well have our own poll to vote on:
"Who's CCM's BEST Defender ??"
.... & yes FB's won't be included :p
Chopping and Changing has been so annoying and a real killer to our seasons. No continuity and connection between the players.
I wouldn't read to much into the very early season stuff.
However if you are not going to be a lock first 11 you need versatility to make the bench. Also helps for injuries during a game and coach can make moves. Also if we are pushing to get a goal we might go back 3 etc.

The other problem has been all our CB's have been of the same standard so when someone stuffs up its like well better give x ago. Then they stuff up and we go round in circles.

We really need a set back 4

Debate: who is the best-ever Hyundai A-League defender?

View attachment 942

Wilko & Zwanny, rightfully so make the list BUT Durante  currently topping the poll gives cause to ... 'wtf ???'

As much as I rate & Mrs Rowdy  Wilko to death, Zwanny was just a level above him in the defenders game

So proud that both are included BUT c'mon Yellow peoples, vote for either of our boys !!!

The answer's obvious isnt it.

heff season 1 did good.

Sure did but he was a specialist FB. He was technically our weakest player in season 1 but ended up getting 1 cap for Oz with limited natural talent. He did end up as a winger in the last 2 seasons of his career if i remember correctly.

Kye Rowles according to Fox Sports at least when the Roar played Muangthong in the ACL, has always been a Centre Back and was played out of position at left back because the Roar had injuries to every other player that could conceivably play there. From watching that game he was horrendous and a massive liability, he just had no idea how to play the position and was exposed time and time again by a not overly great Thai winger.
I sincerely hope that I am completely wrong on this but he just looked no where near the standard playing there and far,far weaker than his team mates.

I think you are wrong JP.
The boy looks excellent.
I've seen him play LCB inside Rosey and look excellent and last night he played LB and looks like he would keep Rosey out on that performance.

Good question Rowdy.

Golec is a huge aggressive CB but he looks a bit error prone (although not to McGings level lol) He also looks like he would struggle at LB.

Rowles looks like a quality prospect. I'd actually play him as my starting CB alongside Baro (who is exceptional). He played at LB last night and looked the goods again so much so that Paul may be thinking of him as his starting LB.
I think Liam Rose will be his 1st choice back up at CB.

The harder question is now McGing or Storm at RB??

To show you how important FBs are.... Man City just paid more for Kyle Walker than other new signing John Stones (an England starting 11 CB).

From what I have seen Kye Rowles while ever he is playing well and in form should be our starting CB next to Baro. He is also our best performed LB at this stage. Then the question is LB - at this stage I give it Josh, similar defensively but he better than Golec going forward.

At the moment a back four of

Roux---Baro---Rowles---Rose with cover of

McGing--Ascroft---Rose---Golec

Golec looked good last nite at CB for mine, handling the long ball passes with ease and showing some adept first touch passes when bringing them down - head , chest & off the feet going straight to team mates many times, impressed me.

Baro alongside him was superb, great positioning, reads the game well & constantly barking at players around him
- which is what you want from at least one of your CB's. An astute pick up by Okon, as Baro will be a solid signing for us this season.

Baro & Golec looking most likely the starting XI CB pairing, with Junior as cover - who showed some real class last nite beating a player twice then another to get out of danger deep on the sideline & with that kind of footwork will also still be a strong candidate for DM throughout the year to the Dutch Duo.
- Berry was terrible at DM subbing on for Brama, copping quite a bit of 'Bez!' barking from Okon.

Kye Rowles was getting a lot of direction from Okon last night on his positioning in the first half, having to get him to tuck in quite a bit when the play was on his opposite flank
Okon was urging & praising him into tackles quite a lot, so seems to be still moulding him into the LB position. Golec moved into LB when Junior (into CB) subbed for Rowles.

Defensively either will get the job done at LB, but a bit unsure about what both Rowles & Golec will have to offer when going forward ??? & as Okon appears to be playing the L&R Midfielders (Appiah/Hoole & Pain) much narrower, wanting the L&RB's to get forward. (not that that happened regularly last nite)

Which leads me into McGing at RB - he didn't look the goods in there last nite failing to predict to drop ftom half to deeper when play was switching along the back from LHS, Okon constantly having to drag him back and forth with direction.

Jake struggled in possession when getting closed down and reciprocally when trying to defend his flank. What surprised me most was he was looking a bit puffed at around 35mins from Okons constant barking for movement (unfortunate for Jake, he was on Okon's side that first half).

On top of that, it took some encouragement from a few of us on the fence to get him to push forward when the opportunity arose -with us screaming "carry, carry" to get him going, instead of the safe pass back into the midfield he was contemplating.

Roux, on the otherhand when coming on in 2nd half, WAS straight into the attacks pushing forward, right to the edges & into the 18.

Okon has been favouring (maybe trying out) McGing at RB quite a lot in pre-season BUT if Roux is 90 min fit, he's my first choice in there hands down.

Shaun was standing behind us in the 2nd half and I asked him what the go was with Rosey, whether he was fit or not?said as far as he was aware Josh was.
So no real explanation? as to why he wasnt even at Pluim last nite.

At the moment a back four of:
Roux---Baro---Rowles---Rose with cover of

McGing--Ascroft---Rose---Golec
Yeah, I'd have that as my starting back 4 as well, with Golec & Kye battling each other.

Roux & Rosey give us much more going forward
- both with experience of doing just that
- & better 'engines' for the up'n' down the flanks compared to McGing & Rowles/Golec

Rosey apparently has the flu - didn't make it to a couple of clinics as well.
Ok, well that's good to hear as to why he wasn't playing.

Pat, I re-posted the my posts & couple of your wuotes in the 'pre-season game' thread as well .... its a bit off topic in here ;)

Roy O'Donovan scored a goal, had an assist and played a full game for the Newcastle Jets as Jake Adelson came on in the 76th minute. Michael McGlinchy and Scott Galloway played full games for the Wellington Phoenix. The match finished 2-1 to the Jets in Edgeworth.

TOBIN QUITS BECAUSE OF FFA TECHNICAL DIRECTOR:

Screenshot_2017-09-19-13-09-33-1.png

Australian legend Alex Tobin quit his position at Football NSW because of differences with FFA technical director Eric Abrams.

Tobin, who was the technical director at FNSW, left his role because he was finished with taking orders from Abrams.

It is understood Tobin was unhappy with the lack of respect and knowledge shown by the Belgian, who took over in the job from Han Berger in 2014.

Tobin has now taken the technical director role with the Hills Football Association.

There might be a little more to it than that. Both FNSW and Eric Abrams may have conflicting accounts.
