A=League Players off Contract

Mariners Players

#2) Matt Simon               re-sign for 2 years
#4) Ian McAndrew           re-sign for 1 year
#5) Brad Porter               re-sign for 2 years
#6) Andre Gumprecht       no new contract retain in a coaching role and use as an injury cover
#9) Nik Mrdja                  no new contract
#10) Tom Pondeljak         re-sign for 1 year
#11) Damien Brown          no new contract
#13) Tony Vidmar            no new contract i reckon after commentating international friendlies he will go into media
#15) Andrew Clark           no new player contract retain as S&C Coach and injury cover
#17) Matthew Osman       re-sign 2-3 years
#20) Danny Vukovic         re-sign 2-3 years
#23) Mile Jedinak             re-sign 3-4 years
#25) John Aloisi               re-sign 2 years marquee deal
#30) Andrew Redmayne    re-sign 1 year

This means that 18 players are signed. after which we need 4-5 players to cover them. positioning for those players would include:

young attacking mid (Swap Gumprecht with a more attacking minded player as we are
overloaded with centre/defensive mids i.e. Jedinak, Porter, McAndrew)
left sided utility       (Swap for Brown)
right back              (Swap for Clark)
centre back            (Swap for Vidmar)
striker                    (essentially Formalise Aloisi for Mrdja)

Players from the A League

young attacking mid --- No one at the moment, this is for Lawrie to scout though I guess, alternaitvely, We could
give Fred a suitcase full of gold :p. The reason for this is to train a medium to long
replacement for Tommy P as an understudy to him
left sided utility --- Caceres or Pantelis would be a good signings here but might be a bit too attack minded to
                          completely cover for brown.
right back --- Downey was good for Perth against us havent seen much of him otherwise though
Centre Back --- The reason I say this position is because if Vidmar leaves we only have 3 in reserve and with
suspensions and injuries likely to happen to Wilko, Boogs and O Grady we dont have enough depth
there. Lawrie might have to scout for this position as well.
Striker --- See above

#6) Andre Gumprecht      re-sign
#9) Nik Mrdja                  re-sign
(lower fee - likely he'll take it - long time investment may turn to serious gold at last)
#10) Tom Pondeljak        re-sign
#11) Damien Brown        release
#13) Tony Vidmar            release

Potential HAL  signings-

Nathan Burns...  (but fat chance I'd say)
Stuart Musialik  (great fit l I feel)
Sasa Ognenovski (Rather play with the Og brute than against him)
Ruben Zadkovich - (Great pace and think Ruben will develop well in time)
Adrian Caceres  (Another good fit)
Ross Aloisi - C'MON! LOL  just so we could sing...
" Now we've got both Aloisis!!!" Both Aloisisss... We've got both Aloisisss!:)
Might also be a keep Johnny long term clincher :)
Ahmad Elrich  - (Pace and width)
Felipe Campos (Creative mid that would get a lot of joy and success out of our great passing game as opposed to what he's experienced with phoenix)

Keeping McAndrew and Redmayne will probably be a given due to Lawries philosophy of given young players a chance, but Lawrie should probably lone them out to the lightning in the off season in order to give them this chance to prove themselves with their new experience from training with the mariners. IMHO I wouldnt be surprised that if we keep Danny, we release Redmayne due to the fact that we probably wont need a 3rd goalie anymore. However I reckon we should probably lone him out if that is the case so he can get some experience, perhaps at another a league club and then we can recall the lone if danny decides to go overseas

Yeah it is possible, but I think you have to set aside a certain amount of cap space to cover his maximum payments.

BTW, Alagich is retiring.

I'd suggest it is against the Collective Agreement with the Players Association.
Yes, Alagich is mooted to retire ... too early I think.
Sarkies is overated (except by his coach and his former coach)
Downey yes please - would make up for missing (cough) Holland

Word from Adelaide is that Cornthwaite has already re-signed and Pantelis will too

of the players I'd like I don't think they'll happen - Burns won't & Bertos will go to Wellington. Zadkid might be a decent pick-up but I don't know if I'd fit him in. Bridge wants FAR too much and he can rot for all I care.

Surely Milligan will just walk out of Sydney FC again and trial for some crap French teams like last season, when he actually still had a contract.

As for Mrdja, he's had three years, give him a chance in the Lightning squad if he's still not interested a season in NSWPL might do him some good.

marinersforever you must be joking with the Reinaldo option???

Id love to see Downey,Pantelis and possibly Cornthwaite.

Milligan would never come, he was offered here for V1 and turned his back on us.
Sarkies - No thanks, the boy hits 1 in 20 free kicks that go near the target and hes supposedly a dead ball specialist puhlease!!!!

hey fish, i'd sign reinaldo due to his speed, reaction time and movement off the ball. IMO he would be good as a good impact player off the bench

IMO, if he were to be used in that way, I don't see him offering us anymore than Matt Simon would in that position.

Maybe I'm being a bit harsh here, but in my very, very humble opinion I doubt Reinaldo can kick a ball straight. He misses twenty sitters a match and scores one about every five games. It's a good job Roar have such a good midfield because there strikers are crap. I can't see why any club in the competition would want Reinaldo.

I'm sure if Farina had any half decent strikers he would come off the bench at best. And don't get me started on Lynch, he's even worse if that's possible.

I just can't see why we have these imported plodders when our Australian boys should be given a chance. There has to be at least half a dozen young boys in the NSWPL alone who are better than this bloke or at least have the potential to be if given the chance.

My biggest criticism of Australian Football is we don't promote and give our most promising youth an opportunity to develop. Look at what Merrick has done to Patafta. One of our best young talents left to sit on the bench and watch a mediocre team lose every week. It's a disgrace and it has to cahnge.

On reinaldo i do believe he is a very good player, its just the fact they use him as a target man and a lone striker he gets alot of the stick, he does everything else well, he can head well, hold up the ball well and is a very dangerous player for queensland, all he needs to do is finish better and he would be easily up there at top goal scorer.

I think of that list of uncontracted players we might see J Hutchinson and M Jedinak taken off in the near future.

Enough with Reinaldo hes f**king rubbish

I think the moment in the Queensland vs Mariners game at Suncorp when Reinaldo absolutely "butchered" that scoring opportunity early in the first half pretty much sums up his year.

Very good news indeed Fish! These two guys are our engine room and so pivotal.

I would say it sums him up as a Footballer.

Does anyone know how close we are to the salary cap this year? I thought we were a couple of hundred thosand short of the limit with Viddy as marquee an JA not counted.

as far as I am aware we dont have a great deal of room. There is always speculation we have loads to spare.
I think we as fans undervalue our players financial value.
Winning the league will only add to the value of certain players when it comes to renewal time also

Was Hutch off contract at the end of the season?

It's funny, I'm a huge advocate of the salary cap, but as it comes to the end of a really good season with so many players contracts coming up for renewal, i wonder if maybe it does need to be relaxed a little more.  I don't think we should release anyone and if we qualify for the ACL then surely everyone deserves to be around to play in it.

Also if Vidmar does retire I truly hope that the club keeps him in his capacity at the academy.  I would love to see him as the gaffer for the Mariners one day in the distant future when Lawrie is off leading the Socceroos to their very first every World Cup victory  ;D

Was Hutch off contract at the end of the season?
According to the EA a few weeks ago he is.
