A "Third Way" would be to establish an Australian monarchy.

Make that Hutt River guy from W.A. King - he knows the way forward.  ;)

Nope, Royals are for shootin. Lenin knew what to do with the parasites

Saying that when it's been 20 years since half of Europe was liberated from the vile doctrine of Marx and Lenin? I have absolutely no words for that...

The Soviets still have a lot to answer for, from illegally occupying the Baltic states for 50 years, to wartime atrocities, to imposing their doctrine onto an unwilling population in Central and Eastern Europe, causing a flight of people to the four corners of the world.

What have the Romans ever done for us?

You know... numerous crimes that were committed from the 1940 onwards:
- The Katyn massacre
- the illegal annexation of Lithuania, Latvia and Estonia
- the imposition of an illegal regime onto Poland. Remember too that many from Poland fled to the UK, US, Canada, Australia, Brazil, etc from that time.
- the destruction of democratically-elected government in Czechoslovakia and Hungary right after the war
- the crushing of the Hungarian Revolution of 1956
- the crushing of the Prague Spring of 1968 (my dad fled a year later)

I don't know if I'm going to attribute the atrocities of Mao and Pol Pot to the Soviet system given the Sino-Soviet split and all, but you get the deal.

For anyone who is even tempted to vote no next time around, these are the people who rule over you

http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-379036/Prince-Philip-pictured-Nazi-funeral.html

Prince Philip has broken a 60-year public silence about his family's links with the Nazis.

In a frank interview, he said they found Hitler's attempts to restore Germany's power and prestige 'attractive' and admitted they had 'inhibitions about the Jews'.

Royals notwithstanding, the world was a much better place when we ran it.

Alf's wife is the spit of my late Grandmother too

And for all that, Juan Carlos I of Spain is a symbol of democracy in Spain. Franco had wanted him to be a puppet for a continued Fascist state after his death, but the new king ensured this would not happen and proved to be a great reconciler with all sides.

After hundreds of years of conquering they changed your bloodline forever.

Do you think they kept their hands in their pockets all that time?  :pirashoot:

The Norman conquest of England in 1066 changed the English language forever. It injected heavy Romance influence into the Anglo-Saxon language.

Norman is a Romance language in its own right rather than a mere French dialect.

So, a republic eh?
Why a Republic?

An Australian republic is about Australias future. Its about our shared identity and place in the world. It will have a Constitution that reflects the sovereignty of the Australian people, so that any Australian citizen can aspire to the highest office in the land.

An Australian republic will embrace our egalitarianism and the concept of a fair go. It will honour and acknowledge our Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander heritage and cherish its culture, with its timeless connection to the Australian land and sea. It will recognise our British heritage and acknowledge its gifts, including our political and legal institutions. An Australian republic will celebrate our immigrant heritage of opportunity and endeavour and its contribution to our national identity. It will unite all Australians behind an Australian Head of State.

The Framework

While much of the discussion about an Australian republic has been on selection methods for the Head of State this has overlooked the important framework that would support the final preferred selection method. The Australian Republican Movement (ARM) supports the following framework for an Australian republic.

  1. Australias Head of State to be an Australian citizen.
  2. Australias Head of State to be a non-executive Head of State and to have powers like those of the current Governor General
  3. All references to the Queen and the Monarchy to be removed from Australias Constitution and replaced with references to Australias Head of State.
  4. Australias Head of State to be dismissed only by a vote of the Federal Parliament, which requires asignificant majority of the Parliament.

The ARM supports the Australian people deciding on the appropriate selection method for Australias Head of State, and we will support that choice. The above framework will ensure that our existing parliamentary and federal system of government will continue to flourish regardless of the selection method.

The ARM has no clear preference on selection methods for our Head of State. We have listened to the people over the last decade and believe this decision must be the peoples choice. Any of the following non-exhaustive methods below would work with our proposed framework. These are methods that have featured in public debate over the last decade:

    *    Elected by the Australian people from a list of candidates nominated by the community.
    *    Elected by the Australian people from a list of candidates nominated by the Federal Parliament.
    *    Appointed by a two thirds majority of a joint sitting of both houses of the Federal Parliament.
    *    Appointed by a constitutional council of eminent Australians such as former governors and/or governors-general and High Court justices.

Other options may be considered in the lead up to a republic. The ARM will support the final selection method decided upon by the Australian people, and will campaign for it.

How to get to a republic - the Process

The ARM recommends the following process for achieving an Australian republic. Each of the steps below is to be combined with the public consultation and education necessary to ensure that Australians are fully informed and involved in this important decision about our nation's future.

  1. A non-binding plebiscite on the threshold question of do you want Australia to become a republic with an Australian Head of State?
  2. Following the full development of potential models by an expert drafting committee for public comment, a second non-binding plebiscite on which republican model should be put to a referendum.
  3. A referendum on an Australian Republic according to the model preferred by the Australian people voting at the second plebiscite.

Our Republic - The People's Choice

The most important aspect of all is the sovereignty of the Australian people in determining the shape of an Australian republic. The ARM offers this policy as a guide. We stand ready to work with the Australian people on this important national journey.
I just have to add, having a president picked by 2/3 of both houses of parliament wont stop a sports star from becoming head of state. in fact that's more likely the case as either side wont allow the other to pick any person with political ties.

a people's republic is the best way to go. You just need to make sure that when the constitution is changed its power's are clearly defined.

Mind you, id like to see a massive change to our constitution that clear's up any confusion and places some of the conventions we have into actual law.

The only European royals who don't come from the same gene pool, or are otherwise entirely home-grown, are:

Serbia- the Karadjordjevic dynasty. They and the rival Obrenovic house (which reigned in Serbia until 1903) were leaders, more or less, of the uprising against the Ottoman Empire that led to the restoration of Serbian self-governance and finally independence. The Kings of Serbia later became Kings of Yugoslavia, and the last reigning monarch Peter II never abdicated. In fact, the Karadjordjevics are still revered in Serbia today which in the context of post-breakup of Yugoslavia turmoil and aftershocks, is unsurprising and understandable. The Republic of Serbia today uses royal symbols, just look at its flag and coat of arms.

Montenegro- The House of Petrovic-Njegos ruled as prince-bishops from the late 17th century until 1852 and then as secular princes from then until 1910 when they became Kings, until Montenegro became part of Yugoslavia. They still command respect in Montenegro today, and Montenegro uses royal symbols on its flag and coat of arms too.

Albania- The House of Zogu, whose only reigning monarch was Zog I of Albania. Pre-WWII Albania (before Enver Hoxha, one of the most infamous and paranoid Communist rulers in Europe, created his isolated "utopia") was still a very feudalistic society although a few European countries were too. The Zogu family were one of those aristocratic families, and Ahmet Zogu was elected president of Albania in 1925 and made himself King in 1928. Zog's son Leka, currently head of the house, married an Australian, Susan Cullen-Ward.

In the '80s (I think 1988), laws were passed in both the Australian and UK parliaments preventing either the monarch or the UK government from interfering in the internal affairs of this country. This makes us a republic in all but name.
If it ain't broke, don't fix it.
