Harry Kwell says on TWG site today we dont have to win pretty just qualify.
What will qualification do for Football in Australia. For starters it will allow the capping of a number of the younger players. Have a 13 month lead in to the world cup for promotion of football. Arguably help the start of the A-League by creating an interest in Football. On the negative side is the remaining world cup matches in Australia are ..dead rubbers.
The importance of qualifying for football growth in Australia is almost ill measurable. IMO a 2010 world cup will accelerate football acceptance into the mainstream of Australian sport. Assist the expanded A-League in 2010 when we will have a 12 team and a suspected 33 round competition meaning real head to head stuff with other codes in winter. But maybe the most important will be the returning Socceroos to the A-League from this side who will return in 2010 & 2011.
Then in 2012 the new deal is up for grabs. Football will have international teams, a strong domestic competition with its own international competition, the FA cup style competition. The future funding for football will in part come by the qualification to the World Cup. The mainstream media interest so important for the local domestic competition will also be greatly boosted by a successful Socceroos side and returning Socceroos.
