The Future of Perth Glory

Well, as the title suggests, how long does Perth have left???

Is it correct that the 'foundation' clubs were each given a 5 year license, or was this just for exclusitivity ?  (i.e. not to allow a second Sydney team for 5 years)

After last nights performance, Perth was dismal, their crowds are pathetic, and they are the underacheivers of the league. This is illustrated by the fact that they are the only Australian team to have never made the semi-finals.

It is undeniable that a Perth based side will always be a part of a 'national football' competition, however, I think the Perth Glory 'brand' might be past its best before date. As it was suggested in another thread, perhaps the persona of 'West Coast United' could be adpoted. They need to start from scratch as soon as possible, otherwise, a trip to Perth will continue to be seen as an easy three points.

Perth is an open market after AFL season, and the Glory should have capitalised on the fact that both WA AFL teams missed out on the AFL finals seires.

Any thoughts?

P.S - Sorry Mods, couldn't find a thread for this one

I don't know if the the club needs to be axed, but they do need a revamp and maybe try a different approach (coaching staff?) to be more successful.

I'm not sure whether it would make much difference whether they're axed and replaced, or if the management gets completely revamped.

For the sake of hanging on to what small amount of history and tradition there is in the league, i'd prefer to see the complete overhaul option.

However, it's probably the club's call to implement that in order to save themselves, whereas if they don't do something in time it will be the FFA's call to give them the boot.

I'd be thininking there going to be struggling i think they need to try what NZ tried that almost worked nz were very nearly a competitive team when they first changed it up.
If perth gets axed or another perth team takes over what will that mean in regards to the world cup? bid it sais in the artical if mariners buy its stadium its a good thing for world cup as 3teams will own there stadiums perth glory own there stadium just wondering if thats makes a difference to anything?

sorry i didnt word that the best but i know what i mean :p

Agree or get some decent management with money ........ maybe get Nick Tanna back if he is willing.

I remember Nick Tana saying when Glory were the biggest and best club in the NSL, that he would sell the club for a dollar and stand in the shed and support Glory with the reat of the fans. He said he would do this when Football had "arrived" as a sport in this country.

His overwhelming agenda was not to own a club forever but to use club ownership as a vehicle to get the sport to where he thought it should be. He always said when he thought Football was in a healthy position he would relinquish ownership and simply become a fan.

He lost millions owning Glory, not to mention court battles with Afkos, who was a part owner and I think was part of the rump board of Soccer Australia.

Glory have unique challenges that the rest of the HAL clubs don't face. The mining boom means the cost of living is very high which makes it less attractive to attract players with the cap. They have to travel every second week for hours which makes it more difficult (every club complains about having to fly to Perth) and players think if they go to Perth they won't be in the shop window for the Footballeroos. All difficult factors.

The league's three years old. I and nobody else is disputing they've been woeful. But remember that it's NZ that have finished last every year. It's not as though the HAL's been going fifteen years and their been last every year. Who's to say that in a few years time, it won't be Queensland or North Queensland or scum that are the easy beats. The league's three years old. It's not the end of the world and they'll get better. Three and a bit bad years does not mean a club should be punted. If anything this thread should be about New Zealand not Glory.

I'd like to see some concessions for Perth Glory based on the cost of living argument.

Fact is their problems start on the pitch, and that begins with recruitment. Due to the reasons marinersman mentioned, it's hard for them to attract players. No point sacking Mitchell because he can only use the players they have, and they aren't good enough at the moment, particularly at the back. Give him time to add stability and get some decent returning Aussies into the club from overseas. They need a Muscat/Moore type player on the pitch to demand the best from the whole team.

With some success on the pitch and some decent football along the way, I think everything else will gradually start to work.

Agreed, while sacking the coach is the easy option, no one can make Tarka or Robinson HAL footballers or Petkovic use his arms and move about a bit.

They have recruited sub standard journeyman and the results show it. Their Yoof team looked to have a few handy players and maybe they need to cut out some of the rubbish and give some kids a go.

Thats probably their best bet; focus on nurturing local talent. They're more likely to be comfortable staying in Perth near family. They're also more likely to be loyal to the club and attract interest from fans in the same way as Lawrie fosters support of locals by utilising local players. With the NYL in place, it may make things easier for Perth to achieve this end.

last four posts are on the money - get the recruiting right, put a *team* rather than a collection of players of variable (or questionable) quality and sort the management.

If Andrew Forrest of Fortescue Metals wanted to make a hero of himself, he'd put together a bid to buy Tony Sage out and put together a new team. Keep the colours and the name but strip the rest out. I can't see all that much resistance to this - Glory have barely been a shadow of their former selves since the start of the A-League, and reading the Gloryboys forum is like looking into a group for the collectively suicidal. Theres a sense of shame and disappointment that pervades everything over there, and the list of people to blame seems to be a mile long.

The solution is a buyout and revamp. Someone with genuine money, advised and assisted (genuine assistance) by the FFA could put a team together essentially from scratch in the way that Wellington Phoenix were.

On a semi-related note does anyone know if there is a clubs conference or anything in the A-League? I know there is a coaches thing every year, but with COAG on at the moment it made me think that a sensible thing for the FFA would be to facilitate some sort of information and skill-sharing exercise for clubs to learn from one another about things that are working and things that arent. Itd provide quality information for the FFA as well to assist all clubs in prospering in their respective markets.

+The solution is for a very rich person to buy the club+

Praying to the sky for a saviour is not going to get the club out of trouble.

I don't have the answers, but what has been put forward as a 'solution' here is madness.

"What should happen with glory is a rich guy should buy it."

That is a great idea. I have another. Mariners should have Cronaldo instead of Elrich.

perhaps i was less than clear - the revamp is the important bit, but a wealthy owner/benefactor is a necessary component of that.

the fact is that the present owners have demonstrated they are incapable/unwilling to do it. there needs to be renewal, and there's going to have to be some commitment (i.e. willingness to lose some $$$, and obviously this requires having lots of $$$) to work through for a few seasons to build it up.

perth needs to become an attractive place to go. i'm not convinced salaries are the problem, i think the problem is that the club itself is the problem. the club needs to be remade.

robinson (aka merkinhead) out for 10 can only help.

EDIT: except...

Mitchell said Naum Sekulovski was likely to fill the midfield void left by Robinson.

Revamp can't go on without a new consortium who are willing to underwrite the losses.

Let's assume that noone is crazy enough to buy a shitty club going nowhere and think about what FFA and Perth Glory can do now to save the situation.

Or, get rid of them. Accept three new teams for 10/11. Strong consortiums, very willing to build strong clubs. After that if a benefactor comes along then Perth can make a new submission to the FFA and if it is strong enough they can get accepted.

It is a shame that a previously strong team has been f**ked by Steve McMahon's recruitment. But I don't want to see a mangy glory fill its cabinet with wooden spoons at the expense of Lucas Neill FC being admitted to the league.

What do you reckon, team?
