They should BAN TENNIS. What sort of a shit "sport" is it anyway? Look at the type of fans it attracts too! They should ban the sport before someone gets seriously injured by these HOOLIGANS.

http://www.news.com.au/story/0,23599,23048808-2,00.html

A MOB of Croatian fans on their way to the Australian Open threw flares and taunted police today.
Mounted police shadowed the group of 100 supporters as they entered ticketing aisles and chanted "all cops are b**tards".

The group descended on Melbourne Park from Flinders St, hurling flares on the footpath as they walked along the Yarra River under the gaze of police on horses and bikes.

They quietened down and dissipated as they entered the venue.

The fiery open to the first day of the tournament follows ugly clashes between Croat and Serb fans last year.

Security has been beefed up after several incidents marred last year's tournament.

Police will put on extra patrols and closed-circuit TV cameras will be used for extensive surveillance.

Fans evicted because of bad behaviour will be banned from the tennis for 24 hours.

A star-studded cast will kick off the 2008 Australian Open today with record crowds tipped for the two-week feast of tennis.

More than 500,000 fans will flock through the gates at Melbourne Park and some 15,000 hot dogs and 40,000 buckets of hot chips will be devoured as the world's premier players slug it out for Grand Slam glory.

Until they bring tennis out of the dark ages and into the mainstream where players have no nationalities, it will always be blighted by this sort of violence.

So I wonder when there will be an inquest and review into the behaviour of tennis fans??    Will the Telegraph and Herald have "Hooligans out of control" complete a flare ripping photo on their front pages tomorrow??  I wonder where the blanket coverage on bad fans from 7 and 9 is??  Typical agenda driven media bullsh*t....... this will be ancient history as far as the papers are concerned in a few days time.

Honestly, when was there a federal enquiry into football fan behaviour & a call for football to be banned?
The obsession with a perceived victimisation is a bit over the top don't you think?

Not at all Curious....... will all Tennis fans from now on be generalised as hooligans??  Will there even be mention of this in any media outlet in three days time??    You can bet your life the answer is "no way".

I seem to remember a few months ago the FFA and some security companies and the police and fan groups having to get together to sort out the "problems" that have stemmed from active support and all the rest of it........ wake up Curious, we're up against it and you should know that by now - just look at what damage that article by Noone did, under the pretense of something completely different.  Certain other sports have too much to lose from the effnik sokkahball getting too popular.

I just got told to wake up by someone that wasn't born when I'd seen 25 years of football :yellowcard: The difference between you & I is, I'm not as pessimistic as yourself in searching for any hint of a conspiracy against football by all & sundry in every other article or comment.
Some criticism has been well deserved in the past & still is today, some is not. I try not to see all criticism as the enemy of football.

Dude, don't even bother if you're going to use that argument - this makes you more of a pundit/expert/more worthy to comment on football than me or anyone else on here who is under 25 because............................ why exactly??  I could say "I went to the Asian Cup so I'm more qualified to talk about all matters AFC", but I won't, because it's not true.  Quality over quantity my friend.

The reason such things seem strange to those bought up on European football/lived in Europe/whatever you wanna call it, is that we are one of the few countries in the world that is in the situation we are in with regards to its sports market - FOUR main sports all competing for the _relatively_ small amount of corporate dollar, fans attention, and all the rest that is there to be thrown around, as well as a host of "minor" sports (your NBL's and such).  Is it really so hard to believe that agencies (media and otherwise) with vested interests in these other sports that aren't ours would feel threatened by the growth and popularity of the A-League??  I mean, the Mariners have a better season average than 6 or so NRL clubs, and they've been around for 100 years!!!!    Even though football has been in this country since whenever, the A-League is considered by these types as the new boy on the block who should wait their turn.

Australia is a unique sporting market Curious, we need to remember that and not just write anyone off who wears a tin foil hat.  And yes, I'm pessimistic sometimes, but I'm much more optimistic now than I was a few years ago......... I'm as stunned as anyone by the success of the A-League, and now it's a lot easier to laugh at these media types (Fitzsimons, Noone, that Tom Head idiot from the Adelaide Advertiser, the whole of the Herald Sun) because they are the last of a dying breed.  Give it 10 years and watch what happens when we have football people in the positions they deserve to be.  Every media outlet in the country will have someone as good to football and as unbiased as Michael Lynch (and Cockerill to a degree).
