Sydney getting ready to say goodbye to Aloisi.......

Sydney reveal exit strategy for Aloisi
January 6, 2009

SYDNEY FC's underperforming marquee player John Aloisi could see his two-year deal brought to a premature end after it was revealed his management and the club had a "gentleman's agreement" that allowed a parting of ways.

Aloisi has managed just two goals from 15 matches this season, a return which represents a massive disappointment to both fans and club powerbrokers, who have begun to think it may be best if player and club go their separate ways.

The 32-year-old former Socceroo is reported to be earning $1.4 million per year - which would make him the highest paid footballer of any code in Australia - but with Sydney's fickle sporting market losing interest in the Sky Blues, the club knows it needs more from its marquee player.

Sydney FC have stood behind Aloisi all season and coach John Kosmina has backed his talisman to find form, but chairman Andrew Kemeny yesterday admitted the situation could not be allowed to fester, and the club would be looking to make a decision on Aloisi soon.

"I haven't spoken to Aloisi, I don't believe that's necessarily my job," Kemeny said. "The coach has been speaking regularly, and if I did speak to him, I would speak to his agent [Paddy Dominguez], who I respect. And look, we did have a gentleman's agreement when we signed Aloisi that if he's not up to the task physically - in other words, if he was injured - he would probably say to us, 'Look guys, it's only fair to both parties that I stop playing.'

"Whether we have reached that stage, I'm not sure - and I'm certainly not qualified to say that, and the decision is not over yet."

Asked if he felt he would have liked more from a marquee player, Kemeny was blunt. "Of course we would have. That goes without saying," he said.

The news almost certainly spells an end to Aloisi's time at the club. Should Sydney be able to untangle themselves from the deal, they will almost certainly go looking for a marquee player of international standing, one capable of matching the impact made by Dwight Yorke during the A-League's first season.

Kemeny said that while the agreement was not officially written into any contracts, it existed in a verbal sense and was understood by both parties. "That is the truth. There's nothing in writing, but nobody would deny it. That's purely a vague, general agreement," he said. "John might well come good and have a pre-season which he didn't have this year.

"But he has a contract and the club will have to honour that contract unless they can come to some sort of mutually acceptable and satisfactory arrangement."

If Aloisi is axed, he is likely to demand to be paid the full amount of his contract, given that he knocked back offers from elsewhere to sign with Sydney FC. Speculation is already mounting that he will look to link up with his hometown club, Adelaide United, and that he will be an instant replacement for the retiring Paul Agostino.

only way they will get rid of him is to pay out his contract which would mean the "what a waste of money" chant is even more the case than already is

John Aloisi's agent confirms the striker will see out his contract

January 11, 2009
JOHN Aloisi's agent says Sydney FC have made his client a scapegoat but insists the club's lack of support won't force the marquee striker to quit his multi-million-dollar contract.

Paddy Dominguez fired back on behalf of his star client on Saturday, angered by comments from Sydney coach John Kosmina.

Kosmina told media on Friday that Aloisi was free to leave at the end of the season and hadn't trained for two weeks.

"You'll be lucky to see him again this season," Kosmina said.

Aloisi, in the first year of a $2.8 million contract, will on Sunday miss his second consecutive match because of a quadriceps strain but has made himself available for selection.

While Aloisi accepts his part in Sydney's poor season, having scored two goals in 15 games, Dominguez said the former Australia star shouldn't shoulder all the blame.

"I feel John Aloisi has been made a scapegoat and I feel it's down to money why he's made a scapegoat. He'll put his hand up for his performances, but the club, the team, the management, everybody as a group either moves forward or doesn't.

"I don't see everybody assuming the collective responsibility, what I see is one man being pushed out the front of the shop and him being accused of not delivering, and that's the reason the team's in sixth position.

"The team's in sixth position because everyone's failed to deliver, not just one man."

Last week, Sydney chairman Andrew Kemeny told media that Aloisi had a "gentleman's agreement" with the club to walk away if he felt he wasn't contributing.

Dominguez denied that.

Asked if he felt Sydney FC were trying to push Aloisi out, Dominguez said: "It would be very hard for anyone in his situation to feel anything other than that."

Dominguez said Kosmina's comments were particularly disrespectful because the coach had chased so hard to recruit Aloisi from Central Coast.

"To bring him there and suddenly say he can go if he wants, knowing he has a full season left to go on his contract, can only be interpreted as a lack of support for the player."

Aloisi has been training in rehabilitation with retired Sydney FC defender Tony Popovic. The pair did a session together on Saturday.

Two weeks ago, Aloisi broke his silence, telling The Sunday Telegraph: "I'm not a quitter, I intend to honour my contract through to the end."

Dominguez said nothing had changed.

"He's a proud man, he doesn't intend to walk away from Sydney with his head held down. He intends to prove himself,'' Dominguez said.

Aloisi knows if he goes from Sydney FC at the end of this season, he may as well retire. It will mean the end of big paying contracts.

Dominguez is right though. Sydney FC chased him hard, and paid a lot for his services and now they are prepared just to write this season's signing as a bad move.  If the main motivator for Aloisi's signature was Kosmina himself, Kosmina is really proving himself a right prick now isn't he?

The sooner some sanity prevails at Sydney FC the better. They will have to talk to the player, and make a decision whether to see how he prepares for next season, and hopefully comes good, or decide to formulate exit terms and spend half of the off season negotiating that.

Cannot imagine the new ownership being greatly impressed with all of these dramas. By the time they formally take over in March, they could find the club committed to a lengthy court battle should Kemeny side with Kosmina and try to terminate Aloisi's contract.

Aloisi should just take the pay cut and go back to Adelaide. They play with a lot of width which would suit him and they don't seem to have all the drama that goes with Sydney

I bet they'd have it if he went there.

Sydney have two options:

A) Suffer by having Aloisi see out the last year of his contract, thereby losing another 1.4 million on a player who is driving the fans away.

B) Suffer by having to payout Alosi, but then try to turn a new leaf by signing a new marque.

For the sake of their long-term future in the A-League, I hope they take option B.
