ccmfans.net is the Central Coast Mariners fan community, and was formed in 2004, so basically the beginning of time for the Mariners. Things have changed a lot over the years, but one thing has remained constant and that is our love of the Mariners. People come and go, some like to post a lot and others just like to read. It's up to you how you participate in the community!

If you want to get rid of this message, simply click on Join Now or head over to https://www.ccmfans.net/community/register/ to join the community! It only takes a few minutes, and joining will let you post your thoughts and opinions on all things Mariners, Football, and whatever else pops into your mind. If posting is not your thing, you can interact in other ways, including voting on polls, and unlock options only available to community members.

ccmfans.net is not only for Mariners fans either. Most of us are bonded by our support for the Mariners, but if you are a fan of another club (except the Scum, come on, we need some standards), feel free to join and get into some banter.

So I finally got to a physio...

...hoping to get some exercises for my still dodgy ankle and maybe a little bit more of an idea for exactly what I've f**ked up in it, maybe an idea of how long I'm going to be unable to make a complete dick of myself on the green stuff chasing after the round thing, and...

...well, suffice to say I've apparently done something I didn't actually know you could do. There's a little ligament that holds the ends of your tibia and fibula together, and it's apparently damaged. Don't really know *how* damaged, just that it's not right. Apparently I'm anywhere from needing a brace on it for a while (which I'm wearing at the moment and is basically a loose skate shoes or nothing prospect and not particularly comfortable) to needing surgery to screw my tibia and fibula together and then surgery six weeks after that to unscrew them...

Either way, I've almost certainly blown the rest of this season. Not a happy chappy right now...

i personally would have gone to see a podiatrist...No bias :p
but seriously podiatrist's are more knowledgeable about the ankle joint (I hope no physio's as I have seen on online forums agruments btwn phyio's and podiatrists).
Maybe go to a sports clinic with both there- IMO best outcome when pod + physio are in a team- although if only one go for the pod for sure ;)
good luck with ur recovery and any possible surgery!
PS. Just did an assignment on ankle sprains for atheletes. You been referred to radiologist yet? Do u know what grade (1,2 or 3) it is yet?

Sh*te, dibo, that really sucks man, i feel for you.
i know the pain of a dodgy ankle, having had major injuries 3 times.. the second time was the worst.. tore the ligaments, and with it somehow managed to rip a bit of bone off the side of my ankle.. that basically sucked.

That sux.... instead of seeing a poidatrist, if it keeps playing up, see if you can get a referal to see an orthopeadic surgeon. As if it needs to be operated on they are the ones likely to be doing it and they may be able to do an arthroscopy to see just how damaged it is. It could be that you have partially tore the ligament and have a little bit of it flapping around, in which case they just snip if off and your out maybe a month. If it needs to be reconstructed then obviously it takes a little longer. If you need anymore info give me a buzz, I have inside contacts.

majority of health professionals from my understanding- podiatrists and physio's alike are starting (or at least being recommended) to steer away from surgery as to studies (Pm me if anyone wants the actual names of journal articles) proving it to be at either no more effective- or usually less effective then rehabilitation. Surgery is usually a last resort nowadays- from what I know most health professional's shouldnt send u to surgery till u have attempted therapy + rehab! If that doesnt work thats when they would usually refer u! Although some may if it is a complete tear of the ankle ligament (grade 3) and they are so to speak old school  ::)...(as opposed to partial tear)

Trust me, I know that surgery is quite often the last resort. Speaking from personal experiance... not just study. When you have a physio and a surgeon arguing over what is wrong. And it wasn't untill they operated that they found out that they were both right, and both wrong. Sometimes it is the only way, and often its better to get it fixed sooner rather than later. But what it really comes down to is the individual.

thats cool. I wasnt arguing- just sharing some knowledge I have.
I have learnt nothing except ankle sprains and the basic anatomy of the foot (i also know anatomy of rest of body which seems a waste). So i was all giddy that I could start acting as a semi-podiatric academic :p
at end of day even a physio would know more about ankle sprains then a 1st year pod student (i hope) (but stil not as much as a proper podiatrist ;) )- and he shoul be able to determine what is the most sutiable option- besides even if he may possibly be incorrect in referring you to a Orthapaedic surgeon- they check you up prior to surgery i think!

You would be incorrect, an orthopedic surgeon can check for many things, and don't always operate. Like any specialty in medicine it covers a range of things. Thats why they are continually studying to make sure its all correct.
