Was just reading 442 - Aussies Abroad and noticed a player who I have never heard of before. Richard Porta playing for River Plate in Montevideo. He's a striker who had quite a reasonable goal to game ratio 41 from 78 or something like that! Might be an option to partner Matty

damn! never seen him play- but we (australia) should have at least scouted him AND/OR played him in the dead rubbers!
Pim's arrogance...? I mean from what I understand he has never seen Porta play- so it's not just that Porta may have been overhyped...we just dont know! Tbh we need all the strikers we can get...
Awaits FP's counter post...

By stats he struggled to get game time in 2nd division portugal. So maybe not the best striker going around. But maybe he is more confident back in south america

pim had a great amount of contact with porta. he did all he could do. if porta decides otherwise then he decides otherwise. dont be so quick to form an opinion on something the general public is not privy to.

I struggle with the concept of playing for a country that is not your own. I remember reading an article on Benji Marshall who played for the Australian schoolboys against New Zealand even though he had only been out here a couple of years and he felt uncomfortable singing our national anthem. He decided from that moment to represent New Zealand and I think he made the right choice. From what I can gather this Porta character only speaks spanish so I'm not sure how he would have gone singing Advance Australia Fair before games.

He scouts most players.
I said from my understanding...perhaps he secretly did, but IMO Pim would ahve loved the chance to have shot down the media who have pestered him bout the issue

Sauce? I am unaware of reading about any scouting expeditions? Not being a smart alec- just honestly wondering if this actually did happen (news to me!)

+1...but there are other factors eg. if they are heaps worse/better
Worse:
If given citizenship to American Samoa- would I play for their national team? ABSOLUTELY!
etc.
Now in this case Australia isnt an inferior country (unless u talk to Recoba :p )
Better: hearsay this...but IMO Zidane, Ibra, Nasri, Benzema, Krkic etc.

In terms of NRL...Benji >>> Hunt in this case- no question about it!

Correct. He only wanted to play for australia if he did not get a chance for his adopted country. We don't want to become another Croatia

Provide one.

There are no articles with Pim talking to Porta because he never did. There are many articles about people saying Pim should talk to Porta, but Pim made it very clear that unless he came to him and said he wanted to play for Australia above anyone else, then and only then would he consider talking to him.

Rightly so too, Pim has made it clear that if you do not bleed green and gold you will not get a chance to play. He wants people that will do everything they can everytime they step on the field, not someone that will play only when they want. Even if Mark Viduka came back he would not be guarenteed a spot no matter what is said in the media. He would have to prove to Pim he wanted to be there.

Have a look at the players that have said in the media that they could take or leave playing for Australia. Travis Dodd, Nicky Carle, Dean Bouzanis, Richard Porta. How many caps between them under Pim even in second and third string sides?

Socceroos set to offer Porta an Australian gig

AUSTRALIA may yet unveil a secret weapon for the World Cup qualifying campaign, with Socceroos boss Pim Verbeek poised to invite Uruguay-raised striker Richard Porta to join the team.

Porta, 24, was born in Sydney but left Australia at the age of one, and hasn't been back since. Apart from a brief stint in a training camp with the Joeys (under-17s) nine years ago, he has had no contact with Australian soccer authorities but in an interview just before Christmas, he expressed an open mind about the chance of playing for the Socceroos.

Last year, he was involved in two camps with the Uruguayan national team, but has yet to be capped, although there is speculation he could be handed his debut in next month's friendly against Colombia in order to head off Australia's interest.

Porta was relatively unknown until last year, when his record-breaking haul of 19 goals in 15 Leg 1 games for River Plate in the Apertura (opening) championship established a new domestic scoring record. That achievement prompted Uruguayan super-agent Paco Casal to buy the rights to his contract for $1.1 million, and two weeks ago, Porta joined Italian Serie A side Siena, where he is expected to debut this weekend.

Verbeek did not want to elaborate on the situation yesterday, but Football Federation Australia technical director Rob Baan confirmed his interest, saying: "We have discussed that, and we've asked his agent for DVDs as soon as possible because we want to have a clear idea of his qualities If it looks good, we may go there (Italy) and have a look at him. It's definitely an interesting possibility, even if it's not possible for this game (against Qatar on February 6). What we have in mind is after that, for the game in China, because otherwise it might disturb the preparations."

Those preparations included another training camp for A-League players in Sydney in the past two days. While Verbeek continues to hose down speculation about the final make-up of the squad for next month's World Cup opener, he revealed his mind was almost made up. The squad will be named next Wednesday.

There seems little doubt a core of European-based players will be asked to return, with Verbeek saying: "I am very close to finalising the squad I wait for the next training camp, then I have a very good impression of my plans for the Qatar game, and also the China game.

"This was a very good training session. I am getting a much better impression, so it's getting interesting."

Verbeek hinted he was unlikely to bring any more A-League players into camp, and the chances of Queensland Roar defender Craig Moore making his international comeback against Qatar have lengthened.

The former Socceroos captain has put his hand up for selection after skipping last year's Asian Cup, but continues to be hampered by injury problems.

Qatar continued its build-up for the match with a 0-0 draw against Syria in Damascus.

■Striker Archie Thompson says Melbourne's failure to reach the A-League finals could make it harder for him to crack into Pim Verbeek's Socceroos squad.

Thompson attended the second training camp for A-League players, but his striking rivals Central Coast's John Aloisi, Newcastle's Joel Griffiths and Sydney FC's Alex Brosque are all set to be involved in the A-League finals.

"It's tough. Obviously, they're (rivals) going to be playing finals, so it will be harder for myself not having those extra couple of games," Thompson said.

Uruguayan striker still waiting for PimMICHAEL COCKERILL
April 29, 2009
EIGHTEEN months after declaring his interest in playing for Australia, Uruguayan-raised striker Richard Porta is still waiting for a phone call from Socceroos coach Pim Verbeek.

Porta, 25, was born in Sydney but left the country at the age of one to return to Montevideo, and hasn't been back since. Two years ago, Porta burst into prominence after finishing top scorer in the Uruguayan league with River Plate - a feat that not only alerted Football Federation Australia to his eligibility, but also convinced Italian Serie A side Siena to sign him to a five-year deal. Porta played only one game for Siena at the end of last season, and has spent this season on loan to Portuguese side Belenenses.

A change of coach at the struggling Lisbon club after just five games - Brazilian Casemiro Mior was replaced by Jaime Pacheco - cost Porta a starting berth, while a knee injury sidelined him for eight weeks over the New Year period.

Nonetheless, Porta has made 14 appearances for Belenenses in both the league and Carlsberg Cup this season, his last appearance coming off the bench earlier this month against Academica. With four games left, Belenenses are sitting second last on the table and in dire threat of relegation.

Porta won't be hanging around - he returns to Siena for pre-season training in July. Before then, however, he is planning a holiday in Sydney to visit his relatives, and may be in the stands when the Socceroos play their penultimate World Cup qualifier against Bahrain on June 10.

Whether Porta - who attended two Uruguayan national team training camps in 2007 and continues to be monitored by the Uruguayan federation - ever makes it onto the pitch for the Socceroos remains in the hands of Verbeek.

In late 2007, Porta told the Herald he was interested in declaring his allegiance to Australia, but since then neither Verbeek, or any FFA officials, have made contact.

His Sydney-based brother, Gonzalo, confirmed yesterday the interest remained.

"He asks me all the time if anyone has been asking about him," he said. "I passed on all his details to the federation [FFA], but no one has been in contact.

"For sure, he is still interested in playing for Australia. He knows how well the team [Socceroos] is doing. Like every player, he wants to play in the World Cup. Uruguay are keeping in touch - they were going to call him up before he got injured, and now he is not playing regularly so they are using other players. I don't know what will happen, but he is hoping to come here for a holiday, and maybe then we will see."

then finally at the bottom of this story:

http://www.news.com.au/adelaidenow/story/0,22606,25483032-12428,00.html

Verbeek ruled out capping Sydney-born Richard Porta who signed a five-year deal for Siena this year. Porta, 23, is currently on loan to Portugal's Belenenses. He is also eligible to play for Uruguay.

i don't think we should be going and poaching players who've barely lived here like that, especially from second rate nations like uruguay. :p

but seriously, why even talk to a player who is playing us off against another country.

most of all you want him in our shirt because he wants to be in it and he's proud of it. you want him to have the tingle in the spine when he hears the national anthem. you don't want to have him playing us off - his loyalty should forbid him taking the 'wrong' option.

None of these articles say that Pim had contact with Porta as i said, nor does it say that Porta contacted FFA or Pim. Just that his brother provided contact details.

I agree Dibo, only players beating down Pims door with performances and a desire to wear the green & gold should even be considered.

thanks for articles...still a bit unsure of what really happened though...but I have to say the right thing for him to do is play for Uruguay (but then I dont understand all his comments about Australia?)

+1
but it should not be twisted into beating down Pim's door literally :p
I dont think it should be the player's responsbility (as portrayed by negative Pim articles) to seek out the FFA...I want to see some Kennedy style scouting- no1 even knew who he was...What a find Guus!

There must be more to this story than has been displayed. From some of the stories Ive read PV is out scouting all over the place and is turning a few of this type of potential Aussie player over to his way of thinking.
The way i was reading the articles was that he is already looking for the players for the next world cup which means they will start to pop up in the asian cup rounds. I also thought that if some of his younger hopefuls step up there might be a couple of established feathers ruffled.
