RESERVED SEATING?????

Its been shit. Poor organisation. The majority of people who sit in bay 16 dont have a 'bay membership'... And when you think were starting to get a few numbers up security come around and start checking for memberships/bay tickets, which cuts out alot of people.

Micks commentry said the bay was half full/empty is this due to only ticketed members in there or the regulars were away or people have moved on??

its just going to take a couple of weeks to get used to it.

I don't think that it is a thing that will sort itself out over time.

I think we're f**ked for the entire season. Half full bay every round, except sellouts.

It is still very enjoyable to be there supporting the team.

But I hate to cop shit off my mum in the way of "why were the marinators poor tonight?"

The answer doesn't lie with the marinators. IT lies with the people who aren't there.

Reserved seating ensures more people aren't there. So in this respect we must say 'Thank you, CCMFC.'

Looks like most regulars in the same places as usual except that there is v little crowding so no disputes.

Be v interesting to see what happens if we have a big crowd

Just about as many empty seats as people standing even towards the core for patches last night.

Has this had a run on the forum yet:

With undesirables now off the menu, Marinators are left to stew

Sebastian Hassett
September 20, 2008

WHEN the A-League began three years ago, all eight clubs formed supporter groups for their respective sides. Some, such as the Cove at Sydney FC and Melbourne Victory's Northern Terrace, grew into movements that are now important parts of the club.

Central Coast's delightfully named Marinators looked to be no different. Wedged behind the goals at the city end of Bluetongue Stadium, the canary-clad group provided rousing support for their bayside club en route to two grand final appearances in three years.

But just as the Mariners have reshaped their on-field squad in the quest for silverware, the Marinators appear to have dwindled significantly, noticeably dulling the atmosphere on matchdays in Gosford.

In two home matches against Sydney FC this year - one in the pre-season cup and the other in the regular season - the noise seldom emerged from its usual spot behind the goals.

Mark Bosnich's return to professional football ignited those on the sidelines in the pre-season match; but in the round-two clash, it was left to three bays of visiting Sydney fans and their collective voices to create a respectable football ambience.

Notable on each occasion was the absence of the two- or three-bay strong Marinators, reduced to barely half a bay on each occasion. But the group's president, Jeff Hall, says there's more to it than meets the eye.

"What you're seeing is that those people who would have normally stood in and around Bay 16 [the Marinators' core bay] have now been moved elsewhere because they can't get in," Hall explained yesterday.

"This season, the club has made the Bay 16 area exclusive to season-ticket holders, and that's the fundamental reason why it's smaller than in previous years.

"We had a lot of casual fans who could make it some weeks and not others, but now that you have to fork out a flat fee of $180 a season to be there, a lot of those fans have moved on."

It might sound like Hall is complaining, but he's not. In fact, it's the opposite. The Marinators have actively lobbied to have the area exclusive to season ticket holders.

"When we started, it was a fairly small crowd, but then word started to spread that it was the place to stand, chant and drink alcohol. However, that started to attract the wrong type of person," he said.

"People thought they were attending a game in Europe or England and thought it was fine to say whatever they wanted to whoever.

"But looking at the bigger picture, there was a core group of us who knew that would not be conducive to promoting the game for families, which is where the larger audience is."

Such honourable sentiments sound like they have been read from a Football Federation Australia "how-to" kit on creating a supporter group. But it has severely diminished the decibel-level on offer at the stadium, lessening the home-ground advantage.

Mariners coach Lawrie McKinna, who played much of his football in the hurly burly of Scotland's most menacing venues, understands the role fans can play in influencing a result.

"Ideally, we want to get it to a point where other teams don't like coming here. The players want to make it an intimidating place to come on the park, so hopefully the Mariners fans can get behind us and make it intimidating in the stands," he said.

"I think when you're playing in front of a vocal home crowd, it really gives you a lift. If you're away from home and you're trying to do a few things and you make a mistake, the crowd gets on your back and it puts you off your game."

However, McKinna accepts the club's demographics have made it difficult to generate the atmosphere of his homeland. "We always appreciate the support we do get and we've been getting great support over the past three-and-a-half years," he said.

"But because we're a family-oriented club, we attract a different crowd to a lot of other clubs. We're don't seem to get that intimidating support of Melbourne or Sydney, because the make up of their crowd is totally different."

Hall believes the "short-term pain" will bear fruit in the long run and that the Marinators will eventually fill their bay with enthusiasm and noise (and teenagers, once concession prices are introduced).

"We see it as one step back for two steps forward, because previously we were getting a lot of people who didn't support football," he said.

"Yes, it's hurt our visible numbers and noise on match day for now, but we think it will eventually work."

I can see where Jeff and the guys are coming from here.

There seems to be a spread across the top of 15 & 17 and maybe some thought of how to coordinate these groups would be a good idea??

Then, you have the top (say) 8 or 10 rows of 3 bays that can be filled from the bottom when we get bigger crowds.

An alternative is to get a group(s) of vocal supporters in one of the corners where the accoustics of a roof come into play.

The end being open kills the atmosphere unless it is almost a sell out and also a cracking game.

Its not that the Msarinators are doing a bad job.

Its purely a numbers thing. We can't compare to the massive fan bases of Sydney etc.

Should something be done in other bays, and make sure we have some "family friendly" chants that could go on in other bays?

Where we sit we have a few chants we do (as we're surrounded by familys, Celery doens't really get a go....) and it works quite well.

Like many others, I have been in the Bay from Day 1.

Unlike some others, I choose to stay there.

We CLEARLY have less numbers than before, this is FACT.

But I do NOT agree that we have been AWFUL. Less loud, but NOT awful.

We were NOT disjointed last night, letting chants finish before we started another. The place went OFF after Matt Simon's bullet header, and we WERE gutted when Archie equalised.

If people criticise the Marinators, there is no point getting heated up over it. Let 'em say what they want, I simply do not GIVE A STUFF anymore about the types that make these comments. These are the same recalcitrants that sledged us mercilessly about language and behaviour in times gone by. Honestly, go home, read your heroes Piers Aker-person and Ray Chesterton in the Terrorgraph and leave us alone. Stick your criticism up your fat arses.

The SMH article above is a balanced viewpoint, they gave Macari a chance to comment, so be it.

I bumped into Mike Cockerill at Brisbane airport recently. I said G'day, and identifed myself as a Marinator.

He asked the same questions as are mentioned in the Hassett article. I answered as best as I could, saying some people have moved on, there is now ticketed seating, and maybe the novelty has worn off.

I will finish with this; my 10 year-old son, who attends some games as he lives in the Hunter, was sitting with us in Bay 12 at the Derby in August. All on his own, he made the choice to sit with the Marinators. No influence from his Dad, just did it because he FEELS HE BELONGS. I feel the same way. Maybe some of you need to be honest with yourselves, take a DEEP breath and say "stuff the ticketed seating", I wanna be with the Marinators BECAUSE I BELONG, TOO.

I made it to the bay for the last 20 mins of the game. In that 20 mins I managed to scream so much I have had no voice all day.

Must admit we looked a little spread out but watching the game this morning on Fox you could hear us.

Hope my voice is back by Friday. :)

I reckon the Marinators did a great job at the Melbourne game. Sure, it wasn't the biggest turn out, but there were only 9000 at the game so it wasn't just the Marinators who didn't turn up.

I heard you singing a variety of chants and it sounded well organised. The Tifo was great although it was a shame there weren't more numbers to hold it up down lower in the bay.

Keep up the good work and don't let the knockers get to you!

At one stage in the 2nd half you even had the jumping thing happening. Looked really cool.
