Powerchair football headed for the Coast
Former Socceroos coach Rale Rasic, and 1998 World Cup winner Emmanuel Petit, are big supporters of Powerchair football
Central Coast Mariners will welcome its new Powerchair football side to EDSACC Oval in Bateau Bay on Sunday 18 August for the first ever exhibition of the challenging team sport on the Coast.
Powerchair football is one of the fastest growing sports for powered wheelchair users around the globe, and combines the skill of the wheelchair user with the speed and power of the chair itself.
Recently the Mariners moved to adopt a Powerchair football team from the West Sydney Division of Powerchair Australia’s New South Wales competition.
Now known as the Central Coast Mariners Powerchair Football Club, the team has been kitted out with Club apparel for its games against the Western Sydney Wanderers and Newcastle Jets supported Powerchair football sides, as well as the Western Sydney Snipers.
Ordinarily the four teams play their league matches at Kevin Betts Stadium in Mount Druitt, however to recognise the Mariners’ involvement in the competition it has been arranged for the teams to play a round of fixtures on the Central Coast.
Central Coast Mariners Group General Manager, Mr Peter Turnbull, said supporters ought to be impressed with the talent of the Powerchair players.
“We’d like to invite our fans to come along to EDSACC Oval next Sunday to experience a different type of football,” Turnbull said. “We think fans will be impressed by the skill level of the Powerchair players as well as the tactics involved in the sport.”
Following the conclusion of the league fixtures, it has been organised for current Central Coast Mariners Hyundai A-League players Joshua Rose, Trent Sainsbury, Marcel Seip and Tom Slater to take on the Central Coast Mariners Powerchair team. Graham Arnold will be on hand to coach his players while Turnbull will mentor the Powerchair side.
Rose said he’s not quite sure how well he and his teammates will perform against experienced Powerchair footballers.
“We tend to control a fair bit of possession when we play in the A-League but I’ve got a feeling we might be doing the majority of the chasing against the Powerchair boys,” Rose said. “Nevertheless, it will be great to gain an insight into a new type of football and support the sport of Powerchair football.”
